Today, we remember Cpl Brian Criddle, BEM RAVC, who died four days after being injured in a Provisional IRA bombing in Clogher, County Tyrone. MWD Jason survived the blast.

He joined the Royal Pioneer Corps as a dog handler before transferring to the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and training as a dog trainer. He also served in Malaya training American dog handlers in jungle warfare. Cpl Criddle was awarded his BEM for his service in Ulster.

A squirter is an enemy insurgent that is attempting to escape and evade British soldiers.

Dogs are used to pick up the scent and hunt them down, regardless of distance and terrain.

And that’s what we do, every Sunday. Squirters, decoys, trailers or whatever you want to call them, the hunt is on!

The goal isn’t to create zombie dogs who have no personality, no fun, no life. The goal is to help our dogs find a balance which enables them to have the highest quality of life.

Just because dogs will run, walk, play, pace, bark, chew all day, doesn’t mean it’s what’s best for them. We all know that humans who have only one speed: “go 100% at all times” are often severely compromised both mentally and physically, and usually burn out…with ugly consequences. Yet we allow our dogs to be motion/action junkies, and never think to consider what negatives might arise from not knowing how to simply turn it all off.

Most dogs we see in our program have never been helped to learn how to turn off. Their owners have thought the never ending “go” was simply being a dog. So we see jumping, obsessive barking and licking, counter surfing, reactivity, destruction, hyper-territorial/overly suspicious, anxiety, nervousness, and countless other symptoms.

And strangely, for most of these dogs, once some simple rules and structure, and some enforced calm are made part of their daily lives, the laundry list of behavior issues—which we never actually addressed specifically/individually…evaporate.

Does the lack of frenzy and the ability to turn off “fix” everything on its own? Of course not, but the amount of issues that it does resolve would astound most if they could see the transformation, relief, and improved wellbeing over and over again as we’re able to.

Perhaps it’s the missing piece to you and your dog’s peace. ❤️

It is no coincidence that behind every behavioural issue, there is a dog with far too much freedom. It is extremely hard to build the dog-owner relationship when there is no mutual trust and respect. In that scenario the only motivation that we have for the dog to engage is bribery and that will do nothing for the relationship. Every trainer should discuss the boundaries and expectations that are set by you for your dog within your home. This will give the trainer a clear indication of how much control you have of your dog in a very low distracting environment The outside world is full of wonderful sights, sounds and smells and with the expectation to do what they want, a dog will struggle to focus on its owner within that environment. Training always starts within the home and should always be addressed first. Dog training. Done right.

We need to help and guide our dogs through stressful situations, no matter how big or how small. Understanding to navigate certain situations and environments will mean that their world will get bigger and they will enjoy life a lot more. With the correct training and the right approach a small moment of stress will mean a lifetime of resilience. Dog Training. Done right.

Stress, another word you can’t say around dogs these days…bullsh*t! I would rather put a dog through small periods of stress and come out stronger on the other side, rather than watching them have a lifetime of stress. And that’s what most dogs do these days, live a stressful life with no help or direction from their owners. Dora’s owners have done great work so far and have come to us for a little bit of help with behaviours like this. This is Eddie, he came to us when his owner rehomed him from @lincs_dobermann_rescue back in 2022. One of Eddie’s main issues was severe reactivity, he had never been trained or socialised by his previous owner and was an anxious mess when Kate took him on. We didn’t hide away or avoid triggers, we didn’t allow him freedom just in a field, we took him out into the big wide world and guided him through it. This is what every trainer should be pushing their clients to do, in person, along side them. The colour, consistency, and appearance of your dog’s poop will give you information about their gut health as well as their general health. Your dogs poo should be near the same colour as there feed, firm and well formed without any foreign bodies or mucus. If you’ve got ongoing concerns about the consistency of your dog’s poop, and a vet has checked for underlying problems, you could try switching them to bland dog food that is easier for them to digest.

The biggest con in the dog training world today. If you Google “modern dog training” this is the answer you get: “Modern trainers instead focus on guiding dogs to favorable outcomes while stopping them from practicing unwanted behaviours“ What modern about that?

What do you see? I see an extremely happy dog with more freedom than you can shake a sh*tty stick. Wilson had massive prey drive and would chase anything. But look how fulfilled he was running around the woods having the time of his life. No stress from me wondering where he was or what he was up to. Just pure freedom! During my 18 year career in the British Army I spent 12 years training and working with Military Working Dogs of all classifications from attack dogs to specialist search dogs. I was successful in completing numerous civilian and military courses such as a Diploma in Animal care, Military Working Dog Trainer Class 3,2 & 1 and canine behaviour and modification courses. The qualifications and skills I acquired allowed me to work with other Armed Forces and agencies around the world, to help implement training, feeding and behaviour regimes to help develop every dog and maximise its capability.

During the last few months while helping a friend train a new puppy, I realised that my knowledge and skill-set could be used to help every civilian dog, they wont be chasing down armed criminals or looking for weapons of mass destruction but I can help with behavioural issues of any kind, help you train your dog to become well mannered and obedient. I can also design feeding and fitness programs to help your dog be more healthier and increase its longevity and happiness and all this will be done with a realistic no nonsense approach.
