Apologies for the radio silence recently! It's been a busy few weeks with consults, writing behaviour plans, designing and building a shiny new website (which will be launching soon 🤞), developing webinars and downloadables and generally trying to juggle self employment admin with the rest of life, especially with a cheeky 10 month old who is now on the move 👣😬

We're away in the Lake District this week for a family holiday and Tama is enjoying field after field of new smells to discover 🐶

This one deserves a separate post at it's possibly less well known that the other heat warnings.

Depending on the outdoor space you're using in this weather, be aware that real grass and artificial grass don't act the same. Artificial grass won't be as cool for pets or children and can hold the heat at dangerous levels that will burn paws and won't allow your dog to cool.

It can be tempting to just nip into a shop in your way home but while the weather is hot, even with an open window the temperature in a car can and will reach dangerous levels in as little as 5 minutes 🌡️

Drop your dog at home and go back out if you need to. It's just not worth the risk.

Information like this is everywhere at the moment but it should be reiterated. The next few days are going to be too hot for dogs no matter their age or breed. Keep them indoors, in the shade and with plenty of water available.

If you need to take them out for the toilet go early morning and late evening, keep them on lead, walking slow and keep it short.

Mental enrichment is a good alternative to a walk but make sure it's done in the shade and bear in mind your dog won't be able to do as much as they usually do.

Drop me a message if you're worried about how to keep your dog cool or entertained.

This is definitely one of my favourite dog facts. Some researchers have run a study and found that when Magnetic North is aligned with True North, there was a "highly significant axial preference for North–South alignment during defecation"!

A truly fascinating study and worth a read for anyone interested...

Rewarding eye contact can make a huge difference in training.

An added bonus of this is that if you're looking out for eye contact from your dog, you're also actively paying more attention to their face and so you might start picking up things you might otherwise have missed. Things about how they're feeling. Early signals and signs they're uncomfortable. Their happy face when something good happens.

Build that connection between the two of you - it will only lead to good things.

There's sometimes a tendency to focus on simply stopping a behaviour we don't want, rather than look at why the dog is behaving like that in the first place. "How can I stop my dog barking", " How can I stop my dog jumping up", "How can I make my dog sit nicely at the vets".

If instead we could put ourselves in our dogs paws and try to understand what feeling is driving the behaviour, we can identify the dog's need and support them appropriately.

"WHY is my dog barking?" - depending on the situation this could be out of frustration, fear, excitement, anxiety, habit or self-soothing to name a few. Is your dog trying to increase the distance between them and something? Most likely fear or anxiety. Is your dog trying to get to something or someone? Frustration or excitement. Are they barking at the window? Could be high arousal or boredom.

In any given situation it could be any of the above or something else and there's likely a few factors at play. Start to ask yourself how you think your dog is feeling and what they might need from you. The more we can understand our dogs the better we can work together.
