An update from Just For Whippets

I'm afraid I may need to undergo foot surgery this year, which would require a recovery period of approximately 6 to 8 weeks. Not great for walking Whippets!

I have been putting off the prospect of surgery for more than a year, but now I can't delay it any longer! Ideally, I would have the surgery in late spring or early summer.

However, I don't have any specific dates, and I'm unsure how long the surgery waiting list will be. As a result, I've decided to take a break from taking on new clients throughout 2024.

After a break from boarding due to our leaky roof that required significant repair, we are thrilled to welcome back our 1st Whippety guest, the lovely Miss Assia.

As you can see, she has settled back into Just For Whippets life very comfortably. In fact, she was already lounging on a comfy bed just 10 minutes after her owners dropped her off. Happy Whippet!

Today is , created by Zoe Willingham from Best Behaviour Dog Training

Zoe created this special day to raise awareness of the benefits of walking dogs on a lead and show that they can still have a fun and rewarding time.

Walking your Whippet on a lead doesn't have to be dull. It's an excellent opportunity for them to explore and use their incredible sense of smell, and often, a sniffy walk is just what's needed!

It's fascinating to know that dogs possess an incredible 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses. This starkly contrasts our own meagre 6 million receptors, making it no wonder that dogs can detect scents far beyond our human comprehension. It's genuinely remarkable how their sense of smell is so much more advanced than our own.

My Whippet guests are often allowed to decide the route of our walks, and the village churchyard always seems to be a favourite destination. It's lovely to witness their pointy noses twitching as they relish the aromas around them. I'm always intrigued by the scents they must pick up that are undetectable to me!

Did anyone see the interesting article by Nick Duerden in today's https://inews.co.uk/

Nick chats about his struggles to find appropriate care for his adored border terrier during previous holidays. He discusses how his decision to allow a total stranger to stay in their house and look after his dog in exchange for lodging is causing him to feel worried and fearful.

Nick says, "I worry that they may overlook my dog's needs in favour of a trip to Madame Tussauds and then fret over their ability to handle an eight-year-old border terrier who, at times, can snap at other dogs".

There's no denying that it takes a lot of trust to hand over the responsibility of caring for your cherished family member to someone else. Finding a suitable place to leave our pups during holidays has become more challenging due to the recent rise in dog ownership. This task becomes even more difficult when you own a unique breed like a Whippet.

Head over to the www.justforwhippets.co.uk to read my latest blog post and find out what to consider when searching for holiday care for your faithful companion.

As I've gained some new followers, I wanted to share more about myself and Just For Whippets.

My name is Liza, and I live in Wiltshire, north of Swindon. Previously, I ran a successful pet care and dog-walking business named Liza's Pet Care. However, my passion has always been for Sighthounds.

My love of Sighthounds began while completing my school work experience week at a local greyhound racing kennel. I had the best time and was well and truly hooked! Fast forward 30 plus years, I currently reside with my Whippet named Finn, who inspired my brand, Just For Whippets.

Like several Whippet owners, I have encountered difficulties finding appropriate care for Finn when I am not around. Kennels were not an option for Finn and me due to our extensive list of requirements. Finn holds a significant place in our family, and the thought of leaving him was daunting.

Hence, I searched for a place that could provide a homely environment with individuals possessing knowledge and expertise regarding the breed. Most importantly, I wanted him to be treated as if he were with family.

As you may know, Whippets are a unique breed with a sensitive nature and distinct preferences. Whether it’s their love for soft blankets and comfortable furniture or their dislike of cold and rainy weather, their individuality sets them apart from other breeds.

Initially, I assumed I was the only one who faced the challenge of finding a suitable place. However, after discussing my concerns with other Whippet owners, I realised I was not alone in my worries and recognised a genuine need for a Whippet-specific home boarding service. This led me to establish Just For Whippets, and now I am pleased to welcome various wonderful guests throughout the year.

Last summer, after Finn had a wobbly moment while on a walk, we took a speedy trip to our vets.

On examination, Mitral valve disease was suspected based on Finn’s history. We have known for a few years that our boy had a slight heart murmur. So poor Finn had to summon all his Whippy braveness and go for an echocardiogram. I’m told he was brave!

As our vet had thought, Finn was diagnosed with Mitral valve disease. A degenerative condition that, over time, has caused the valves in his heart to become thickened, his heart to become enlarged and stop working correctly.

At the time of diagnosis, worryingly, we didn’t know what the coming months would bring for our wonderful boy.

But a year on, I’m pleased to report that we are managing his condition well, with regular medication and the help of the lovely people at Drove Vets Stratton, in particular our lovely vet Jenny, who listens to all my worried whippet owner worries when Finn visits her for his regular check-ups.

So at 9 ¾, Finn is a senior citizen with a dicky ticker who still lives his life to the full! Sadly, we don’t know what’s around the corner, but every day is a bonus with our stripy white-faced boy and long may it continue!

Have you ever marvelled at your Whippet's remarkable sense of smell? I discovered today that they possess an astonishing 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, which contrasts with our merger 6 million. As a result, they can detect scents that we could never comprehend.

When strolling around the village with Finn and our visitors, I often allow them to choose where we go. Interestingly, they all seem to enjoy the local churchyard, where they delight in exploring and sniffing around for quite a while. I’m very curious about what aromas they can smell that I can’t!

We've recently had some lovely guests staying at Just For Whippets. Including the wonderful Ralph, who arrived complete with his beautiful crochet blanket made by his super-talented Mum.

We always encourage owners to pack a blanket from home for their Whippets holiday. A familiar blanket will retain the smell of their family and home. It can help reduce stress and anxiety in our guests and make them feel more comfortable and at ease in a new environment.

However, I must say that not all blankets are as stylish as Ralph's!
