Pet passport renewal snags! When renewing your pet's EU passport, it is vital the vet transfers the original transponder/microchip date from the old passport into the new one. In many EU countries, the description to enter the microchip implantation date reads 'Date of microchip reading or implantation date.' We've seen situations where the vet documents the date the microchip was read and not its implantation. Beware! This has caused the microchip implantation date to fall after the rabies vaccination date and instantly invalidates the EU pet passport. If your vet enters the date they read the microchip, it is advisable they write directly below that the date the microchip was implanted and annotate it as the implantation date. If your vet refuses, we suggest you take the original documentation of microchip implantation date with you when taking the Eurotunnel. Both the EU and UK rules are very clear the microchip implanation date must be before or on the same day as the rabies vaccination date and the date must be clearly documented in the Passport.

Puppies and kittens! Know the rules...Le Pet Express recently came across a heartbreaking situation. The dog owner had her puppy microchipped first then rabies vaccinated in the EU. All are the correct steps to take! However, her EU vet vaccinated the puppy prior to it being 12 weeks old. She arrived at the Eurotunnel after her pup was 12 weeks old and after the 21 day rabies vaccination waiting period. She contacted Le Pet Express from the Eurotunnel Pet Reception seeking advice to take her pup to the UK as they denied her entry. N.b. she was not a customer. Unfortunately, the UK government states your pet must be at least 12 weeks old prior to the rabies vaccination. Then there is a 21 day wait afterwards. Her puppy had been rabies vaccination prior to being 12 weeks old. The guidance she received was to re-vaccinate her pup and wait 21 days. We post these stories so others don't get caught out as your pet's safe passage is our main concern.

I recently wrote to APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) asking for clarification about updates to Great Britain issued pet passports issued prior to 1 January 2021. Please note pet owners can only travel TO the UK from France on their GB issued pet passport, not TO the EU. That aside, APHA clarified that a GB issued pet passport remains valid as long as your pet's vaccinations (rabies) are up-to-date. I have asked for further clarification if an EU vet can update the GB issued pet passport with a rabies vaccination as long as it has not yet expired. More to come on this.

When crossing European countries especially at the border, we recently had a customer where the French Authorities requested tax be paid on the owner's kitten. Tax is only charged on animals for re-sale, not those traveling with owners. Thankfully she was able to help the officer understand her kitten was her pet and not being re-sold. Persistence paid off!

Recently we had a customer with an EU pet passport from Poland who was living in Switzerland. Unfortunately, the pet passport was invalidated when the Swiss vet updated it with their dog's rabies jab. In this situation, where the issuing country is not a part of the EU, the Swiss vet had to fill out the British Animal Health Certificate. Please keep this in mind! Yes, the Swiss vet filled out the British form and both dog and owner were approved by the Eurotunnel and are now home in the UK. Remember your pooches tapeworm treatment needs to be applied no less than 24 hours and no greater than 5 days in advance of our crossing from France to the UK. We collect you at 15:00 so ensure your dog's tapeworm treatment has been done 24 hours before 15:00. Recently we had to wait 2 hours for a customer's tapeworm treatment to reach 24 hours.
