and brachycephalic breeds

🐾 Then also think about,

How muggy it is
If it is a clear sky and bright sunlight

Access to water
and if you are walking on tarmac

💙💙Blu 🐕 joined My Precious Pets with Milo the rabbit 🐇 for a week.
Blu and Milo prefer to get to know you in their own time.
💙 With My Precious Pets Blu loved walks in familiar, quiet places. On occasions he set the return time as playing in his own space felt safe. He loved running around with a ball, bouncing around and mouthing play. Blu also loves bum rubs and giving out the odd kiss.
💙 Milo the rabbit is an indoor rabbit 🐇 (no photos of Milo due to him being an indoor rabbit)
Milo likes his own space and loves his tunnels and freedom of his room and open cage for free access.
Milo enjoys his kale, and to sniff your hand once he has chosen to greet you.

⚠Urgent⚠
The BBC have shared information recently about a rise in cases of Alabama Rot in the UK in 2024.
An article has warned of a rise in cases this year so far and to; 'Get t Know the Signs.'

The article quotes,
‘Joshua Walker, a vet at Anderson Moores, said: "We know the disease is associated with increasing rainfall and increasing temperatures in the autumn. "It might be that the very wet, slightly warmer November has led to a surge in cases - it's important for everyone to be aware of the signs."’

Alabama Rot, otherwise known as, Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy (CGRV) is rare but is n the rise, and not much is known about the disease, but it is under research and has been for 10 years now.

SIGNS:
🐕‍🦺Lesions, open wounds - paws, lower legs, are more common area, but it can also be found on the chest, stomach, face and even tongue. This could also be a red patch or swollen patch of skin.
🐕‍🦺Lethargy
🐕‍🦺Loss of appetite
🐕‍🦺Vomiting along with drinking more are signs of kidney failure.

WHAT TO DO:
🐾 Wash paws off after a walk, particularly in woodland or muddy terrain - it is thought that dogs ingesting this mud after licking it off themselves is linked.
🐾 Keep fur short especially on paws.
🐾 Get vet advice on first sight of soreness, ulcer, red patch or swollen skin.
Survival rate is low at 10%, but noticing this early gives us the best chance of saving our dogs.
Thankfully, this is still rare, but it is better to be aware and know what to look for.

Extremely high winds forecast with Storm Isha.
What does that mean for us as dog owners?
Well, it means that there is a greater chance of our dogs getting loose and lost.

💨 Risk of winds blowing down fences or blowing open gates.
✔️Step out into the garden to check that it’s secure before letting your dog out.

💨 Risk of things blowing over, noises, dogs being spooked and running off on walks.
✔️ Make sure microchip and tags are up to date incase the worst happens.

💨 Dogs can’t use their sense of smell so keenly, which means they are at a disadvantage when out and about, and can lose their way back to you.
✔️ Keep dogs on lead during their walk, even if familiar.

💨 High winds and changes in pressure can agitate dogs, which means they can display sign of anxiety, restlessness and they can become unsettled and hyperreactive to stimuli.
✔️ Follow familiar routes, reassure where necessary, keep calm and praise at every opportunity.

To firstly give condolences to Piper's family, and to also raise awareness of the symptoms of Leptospirosis x

🚩Lepto symptoms include:

⛑️Elevated temperature
⛑️Vomiting
⛑️Abdominal pain
⛑️Reduced appetite
⛑️Diarrhoea
⛑️Muscle soreness

Owners post 💔
We are devastated to share with everyone that our lovely Piper, aged just 10 weeks and 5 days, passed away last night 💔 Due to the flooding, contaminated water had somehow made it into our back garden and piper contracted Leptospirosis. It set in very quickly and for 32 hours we all did absolutely everything for her, but the infection grew bigger than her little organs and they shut down 😢😭💔

We had Piper at home with us for just 9 days and we are absolutely heartbroken and feel as though she’s been stolen from us, and us from her 😢 So very, very unfair.

Our vets have made us aware that since the flooding there has been a spike in the number of dogs contracting Leptospirosis and so please make yourselves aware of the symptoms in dogs and humans too as it’s really serious. And in our case fatal.

Rest in peace little Piper, we hope you find Maisie up there ❤️✨

Share from dog first aid Derby and East Staffordshire, I know those of you with American Bullies will be worried with the recent announcement, this seems to be the general consensus:

To answer a few questions….Yes, if you already own an XL Bully, the dog will be classed as a banned breed, and you will have to go through the exemption process to be able to keep your dog under Defra’s exemption rules.

We do not know yet, how they will define XL’s, we can assume it will be similar to how they define Pitbull Type…Measurements and Characteristics.

Our advice, at this time, if you suspect your dog is an XL, get them neutered ASAP, to have your dog exempted, it must be neutered. If it’s not neutered and it’s seized, you will NOT get your dog back until it has been neutered. Better having them neutered now by your own vet than the police approved kennels getting them done. Also, if your dog is already neutered, you may be able to stop your dog going into kennels, there’s the IES (Interim Exemption Scheme) that a few forces use, where you can keep your dog at home, under conditions, until the court date for exemption.

Muzzle train your dog now!! This will prove you’re a responsible owner, and, also prepare your dog for having to keep them muzzled, at all times, in public, this includes in your car etc.

If the police come for your dog..DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING!! They may try to blag you into signing…Oh sign this to say you understand why we are taking your dog. Don’t!! You’ll be signing for them to put your dog to sleep.

You will also need 3rd party liability insurance for your dog, this can be got through dogs trust

We appreciate that this news is frightening for owners 😢 And, many will be angry!! Keep calm at all times with the authorities, they will be judging you and your behaviour as well as your dog!!

Hi, I am Dani and I operate Dog First Aid in Derbyshire & Staffordshire.

I am "mum" to Ian and Winnie. I rescued Ian (a Jack Russell X Staffy) in Sept 2013 and Winnie (a Staffy X) in Jan 2013.
