Garforth Hedgehogs Rescue We are a small self funded Hedgehog rescue. Working closely with our vet & other recognised rescues. This will give the hedgehog the best chance of survival.

We always recommend that any hedgehog found out in the day - laying out/ wobbly/ sick/injured, is taken to a rescue immediately or as soon as possible. We are here to offer initial advice/help and first aid, rehabilitation and release back to the wild. We are a rescue with limited space and work closely with Micklefield rescue as one rescue over two sites. We primarily take hogs from Garforth and

surrounding villages. We work closely with other rescues in our area too. If possible, we may be able to collect a hedgehog from you, but better if you can bring to us, checking a space is available first. We aim to pass on information and news in order to raise awareness and help you to be able to help our local hedgehogs. If you find a hedgehog in need you can find your nearest Hedgehog rescue here :-

Who remembers our post about Hemal a hogs born in our rescue in May 2023.
After many trials and tribulations he became a lovely big hog overcoming everything thrown at him. Hi s brothers and sister were released last year, but he had to learn what it was to be a hedgehog.
He final was released after 18 months with us and after loving care form our wonderful foster a beautiful big boy. He is enjoying being a wild hog and attracting the affections of the ladies. He visits us every night and maybe still lives in one of the hog boxes.

THIS POOR MITE was being 'looked after' by a member of the public for several days.
He has contagious ringworm, severe dehydration and is literally skin and bones starving. He was dying so flies had laid eggs on him and it is only at THIS POINT that his finder thought to contact a rescue.
Rescue is not something to 'have a go at'. If you get it wrong you can catch a nasty disease yourself such as scabies or ringworm, or just kill a hoglet that could have been saved.

Yes - most of us are FULL. But if you offer to look after a hoglet under our supervision and do what we say, we can book you in for the next available space. Please, don't just think you can do it yourself. (Not at this rescue, this is Herby in Bingley).
This finder looked up 'how to care for hoglets' on Google and this is the result.
** update - he passed away 😓**

So here we are at the end of another busy week in the rescue, we have been able to release this month so far, Susan, Dash, Indigo,, Bow and Pear, take care all of you. Unfortunately the other side of rescuing are those that were unable to make it, we lost Pesky, Silly, Loki, Puffin and Odin RIP little ones, sorry we couldn't do more to save you
The 4 spices continue to thrive and are now with our wonderful fosterers.
New ones in are Ginger, Dude, Hettie, Briony, Bod, Rosey and Digit.
We still have Pi, Stevie, Thor, Hagrid and Koopa with us.
Thank you for everyone that continues to support us at the rescue,, without it we would find it difficult to run the rescue. Thank you one and all.

09/07/2024

Sorry we haven't updated for a while but it's been a bit hectic.
Will give you all an update on everyone very soon.
This evening we welcomed another little one in, Briony is 170g

30/06/2024

Say hello to our newest arrival little Hagrid 🦔🥰

This adorable little hoggy was spotted out earlier today & the finder knew he needed help. Hagrid only weights 91g & should still be with mum, but she was nowhere to be seen.

Hagrid will have to be support fed until able to feed by himself. After a check over, he is now in our incubator getting warm & cosy 🦔🦔🦔

Yesterday we officially reopened Garforth Hedgehogs after our time of mourning.... However we are now quite busy, having been inundated with hogs, especially little ones 🦔🦔🦔

Unfortunately we are now FULL & will not be able to take anymore hogs in until our numbers go down.

22/06/2024

Here's a update on the Herbs & Spices siblings 🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔

We have successfully stopped hand feeding the siblings & started to change the food gradually reducing the puppy milk mousse mixture to pure mousse & introducing them to biscuits. All the siblings have been steadily putting on weight. Unfortunately thought, Parsley has had a few issues meaning he's had to be taken to the vets for some additional care.

💙 Chives (M) 🩷 Saffron (F) 💛 Sage (F) 🧡 Paprika (F) 💜 Parsley (M)

Just a reminder that we are fully closed from today until Saturday morning 🦔🦔🦔 We will be unable to take any new admissions during this time & there will be a delay in responding to any questions or messages.

If one cute hoggie arrival wasn't enough for today..... Welcome the Herbs & Spices, 5 siblings (Chives, Saffron, Sage, Paprika & Parsley)

All 5 siblings were spotted laid on the grass in the garden of their finders. They are only small & should really still be with mum, but she was nowhere to be seen. As they are quite small, they haven't been sexed yet - All are now safe & warm in our incubator 🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔

Our newest arrival is the little hog with a big name, ODIN 🦔

Found by our very own Mary, out in the day in our front garden nonetheless. Odin has now been checked over - He weighs 236g, has a few seed ticks & is a little dehydrated. We have given rehydration fluids, he is now all cosy & being well looked after 🦔🦔🦔

Hi everyone sorry we haven't posted anything for a while.
Quick update on our current hogs in the rescue.
Dash - she is struggling a bit at the moment but we are continuing to support her, the strimmer wound has fully healed up and new spines are growing back slowly. She is an older lady and such a lovely hog.
Milo - he is now a lovely big hogs and just finished his latest course of meds. If all ok, then hopefully he will ready to go back out in to the wild soon.
June - can back into us recently in a very poor state, she is on meds and is recovering well, she like to demand her wet food - but only pedigree chum original!!!, otherwise I get told off, they can be a picky lot.
Harrison - can in also recently extremely dehydrated and emaciated, but has recovered well, still on meds and has issues with his front paws.
Lemon - she has recently gone out to foster and is doing excellent.
Stevie - he is in our out door hutch, big lad but refusing to grow ant more new spines.......so only partially covered.
Hemal - yeah he still with us, although out in a big soft release area with a fosterer, he is learning to be a wild hog, as he was born in the rescue and doesn't know anything about being a wild hog.
Susan - like Stevie is refusing to grow any more spine, she is with a fosterer to try encourage her to grow them

2. I've disturbed a nest, what do I do?
A. Leave the nest alone
B. If mum runs off do not panic she will be back
C. It's been 5 hours since mum ran off (ring your local rescue)
D. There's no mum In the nest and the babies are squeaking (ring your local rescue)

We appreciate any kind words at this time, however we may not respond right away. At this difficult time we will be temporarily closing the rescue to all new admissions. Thank you

Hedgehogs, like humans, use body language to communicate with each other and with the world around them. As shown on the diagram, hogs can make many sounds, movements and gestures to indicate how they are feeling. These can be show whether a hog is happy, interested, scared or even angry.
