lovely Marble 🦄

If you guessed Unicorn the other day then you’d be correct 😉 she’s a mare!!

Even I was amazed at these two large beans that I removed from her the other day 😮

Me and her lovely mum got talking about the importance of sheath cleaning and how it’s incredible that some people aren’t aware it’s even a thing!

As horse owners we should be forever learning and being open minded to things

Sheath clean should be part of your horses MOT either yearly or 6 monthly (some more regularly) depending on the individual 🦄🐴

‘It’s just a w***y wash’
‘I clean my horses w***y all the time’
‘I just sq**rt abit of baby oil on when it’s out’
‘Ew I’m not touching that’
‘They don’t do it in the wild so theres no need for us to do it’

These are just a handful of comments I get said to me on pretty much a daily/weekly basis.

Firstly, don’t use baby oil. Just don’t.

Secondly, it is far more than just a ‘w***y wash’. Sheath cleaning is an essential part of our horses welfare, and should be seen just as important as saddle checks, dentist, physio etc which most horsey people routinely are on top of 👏🏼

Sheath cleaning to make sure your horse is clean, comfortable and healthy.
Crusty, built up sm**ma can be extremely uncomfortable, waxy thick sm**ma can be an optimum place for fly strike to take hold, beans will press directly on the horses urethra and often are incredibly tricky to remove, now you imagine walking with a stone in your shoe constantly or trying to pass to urine when there is something pressing on your wee pipe 😮
Although I cannot diagnose any conditions, if I see or feel anything slightly suspicious then I can refer to a vet for further investigation.

Mares also get beans, build up and need intimate health checks too 🦄🩷

Knowledge is key and the more we have of it the better we can look after our horses 🥰

Just little old me out here trying to debunk the ‘it’s just a w***y wash’ stigma one horse and owner at a time 🫘🧼🐴✅

I went to visit this lovely chap the other day for a routine cleanse!🧼

He dropped his w***y when I was gathering some basic information from his mum and straight away could see a bulge at the tip of his p***s so immediately I knew there was a bean that needed extracting 🫘

He was an absolute 🌟 throughout his appointment!

See you in 6 months time 👋🏼

🐴 Timmy 🐴

Like alot of horse owners, Timmy’s owners didn’t even realise sheath cleaning was a necessary thing until stumbling across one of my many weird posts 🤪

They booked in straight away and look at the size of the bean that I removed!
It had to be removed straight away as it was soo large I struggled to do any cleaning/checks whilst it was there.

Safe to say he must feel so relieved now that’s been removed and a good freshen up 😊
he’s now on my biannual cleaning program!

Does anybody know why the bean is two different colours?!?
Drop your thoughts in the comment section and I’ll be sure to write the answer in a couple of days!🫘🫘🫘

Sheath cleaning unfortunately isn’t regulated, essentially meaning anyone can just go do it 😵‍💫 HOWEVER this doesn’t mean there isn’t a right and wrong way to do things…

As owners you guys need to be doing your own research into the hygienist you choose and asking the relevant questions 😊

- what products do they use?
- what does a clean involve?
- what previous qualifications/CPD do they have?
- are they apart of the BEHA?
- what if the horse doesn’t like it or is particularly reactive?
- are they insured?
- read the reviews!!!

Your hygienist should always explain what they’re doing, why and any findings!
As hygienists, we CANNOT diagnose anything however if a veterinary referral is required we’ll advise.
Any jewellery, rings, bracelets, watches, bobbles etc MUST be removed!!
Large sponges in my opinion are also a big no no!

These might sound little pointless things but it really is so important!

Now by no means am I out here slating anybody at all, what I’m saying is please as owners do your own research and ask the relevant questions to your sheath cleaner before booking 🥰

Like I always say - education is key 🔑🐴

On wednesday i visited Osberton estate for a yard visit 🐴🦄

Unfortunately I didn’t get pictures of everyone but here’s some I did manage to get!

We’ve got the lovely Captain, Edmund and Ralph pictured 🥰

Owners at first gave me the heads up that they weren’t sure how the geldings would react as most had never had it done before - all boys absolutely excelled expectations and were amazingly well behaved, I think they were grateful to be feeling much fresher down there 🧼😂

I always aim to make sure every horse is treated with the time, patience and understanding they deserve to make it the most positive experience possible for them 🐴🫘🧼

Lucky 🍀

This horse is one of my oldest friends 🥰

She first came into my life around 10 years ago and I’ve always loved her 🫶🏼
She is the typical description of the chestnut mare 🐉🤣 but she never had me or her lovely owners fooled - shes just a big baby really and loves any form of attention, treats, love and fuss 🥰

I recently went to go visit Lucky to give her a clean!
Shes was a quite crusty round her teats but no bean 🙌🏼🥳

The most special part was Perci meeting her and having a walk round 🐴🩷

Do all horses display signs if they’ve got a bean?

Short answer - NO!!!

Horses are extremely stoic animals, so much so often we don’t give them enough credit for this…
I have done many horses that has displayed symptoms such as;

- kicking tummy
- swishy tail
- swollen sheath
- napping/ reluctance to move forward
- issues urinating
- doing the ‘wee stance’ but not weeing

However they are some horses that don’t display any signs!

This is why as horse owners we MUST be booking our horses in with a professional at LEAST once a year to give a full thorough sheath clean , bean extraction if needed and health check!🐴🫘🧼✅

Please drop me a message more information ℹ️
