It’s Feed Fact Friday!
We all know someone on the yard who is a ‘super scooper’ and heaps the feed into the scoop – and we also know someone who barely scoops enough to make it level.
This is why we recommend you feed by weight and weigh your feed scoop – how you would scoop it!
This will help you track your horses' feeding rates and ensure that you are feeding the correct amounts.

Thank you Connolly's RED MILLS for sharing this important tip!

As the temperature drops, adjusting your horse’s diet is crucial to keep them warm and healthy. Thanks to our member SPILLERS , we’ve got some expert tips on calorie intake and feeding ratios.

We all know that to gain weight, horses (like people) need to increase their energy or ‘calorie’ intake. However, when comparing one feed against another, it’s essential to consider the feeding rate and not just the calories ‘per kilo’. After all, the number of calories consumed from any feed will depend on how much of it is eaten! For example, on a kilo for kilo basis, micronised linseed is almost twice as high in calories as a conditioning feed but when fed at 50-250g per day, it will add minimal calories to the overall diet for a 500kg horse.

As the winter season approaches, we’re excited to announce the return of our Winter of Welfare and Well-being campaign!

This year, we’ll be sharing valuable insights and practical advice on winter horse care and rider self-care. Let’s warm up the winter together!

BETA Feed Fact Friday- Remember to think about your horse’s water intake this winter

As temperatures drop and winter weather sets in, ensuring your horse has adequate access to water is crucial. Here are a few tips to help maintain optimal hydration:

1. Check your horse’s troughs and buckets. Thick sheets of ice over your horse’s bucket will of course restrict their water access and so it is important to remove them on a daily basis.

2. Offer warm water where possible. Research has found that horses drink up to 40% more when warm water is offered alone.

3. Adding water to the feed is a useful way of helping to maintain water intake. Using soaked fibre products such will entice even the fussiest of drinkers, as well as providing an additional source of fibre to the ration.

4. Provide salt on a daily basis to feed to help to maintain a normal thirst response.

5. Soaking hay or offering haylage when appropriate can also help. Haylage has a higher moisture content than hay, and soaked or even steamed hay will increase the water content from around 9-20% depending on the type and quality of the forage.

Unpredictable Weather? ❄️☀️The BETA Guide Has You Covered! ️

With the weather constantly fluctuating - from freezing temperatures to a forecasted 12°C - it's tough to keep your horse comfortable.

Remember, every horse is an individual! Here are some things to consider before rugging up:

Is your horse clipped?
Stable management routine?
Level of work?
Access to forage and feeding regime?
Horse's type and condition?
Weather (cold, wet or windy)?

Need help deciding?

Our FREE Temperature Guide is a great starting point! ➡️link in comments ⬅️

We're curious! Tell us in the comments:

How many rugs does each of your horses have?
How often do you wash your horse rugs?

The Autumn edition of BFFF24 is coming to an end, but for our loyal followers, we have a great prize for the grand final!
Win a fantastic prize from STUBBS England – S102 Soak 'N' Roll 🏆🐎

******NOTE TO ALL ENTRANTS: please ignore any messages saying you have won and asking you to click on a link taking you to a fake BETA website. It is a scam. If you win we NEVER ask you to use a link to claim!!!

The S102 Soak 'N' Roll is as much about human health as equine. So many people in yards have bad backs from trying to lift out soaked haynets from a water tank. This product massively reduces that risk. In consequence, all those people who do not soak hay because of their painful experiences can now do so. One-piece construction with no small parts to get blocked, broken or lost!

To take part in the competition, answer the question below in the comment.

What have you learned during BFFF24 that you think every horse owner should know/ practice?
