When I have a new client call to enquire, one of the things we talk about in the phone consultation is how I work.
The way I approach training can be a bit different to a lot of other trainers in the area. When you book an in-home consultation with me I take what's known as a holistic approach as well as being R+ and force free. The plan that you're given will look at all the different aspects of your dog's life so that we can treat behavioural difficulties at the route.
What some people find surprising and sometimes a little unexpected is that there often isn't as much ‘training’ as they expect. Training is still very much a part of what I do, but it is just one part. I also look at diet, enrichment, management, health, history including puppyhood and any potential traumas. I am not a qualified nutritionist or a vet and I always make sure to refer clients to the appropriate place for further help but due to my small animal nursing, animal management, psychology and learning theory knowledge and many years of experience I am able to help identify the areas that may need another look.
The first step is ALWAYS management, preventing further stress, the practicing of negative behaviour patterns and the prevention of potentially dangerous situations allows dogs and humans to decompress and find a start point
Then we look at health and diet, what's your dog's medical history like? Are there some things that could be driving behaviour like pain? If we can identify these issues often the behaviour resolves with just a little help and sometimes on its own!
Next is enrichment, is the dog having its basic needs met? If it's a staffy or bully breed is it getting an outlet to do lots of biting and chewing? Is your collie given a safe space to practice natural herding behaviours instead of applying them to the kids? Are they getting appropriate exercise and so on. Tailored enrichment is phenomenal for reducing stress and increasing confidence.
FINALLY we look at training, now we hopefully have a healthy, pain free dog that's needs are being met in the right way and who is no longer practicing negative behaviour. Here we can introduce things like clicker training, engage and disengage games and counter conditioning protocols. This given the training that we do the best possible chance to be effective because there are no underlying drivers having a negative impact on your dogs behaviour.
Now when you put the whole picture together you are able to implement real change for you and your dog.
I've put a photo below, that for me, shows how insanely effective proper holistic R+ training is. Two reactive dogs who have both had a lot of trauma in their lives co-existing beautifully. Heldig in particular never would have felt safe to sleep on another dog until very recently. She has even become social while out and about making friends with a wide range of dogs!
