A great saying never to forget “FK around, you will find out”

HUMANS are responsible as a generation for the genetic MESS some dogs have become.

This is what happens when Joe next door thinks his dog should have a litter, for quick 💰 and hands over his puppies to the first applicant that comes along.

This is what happens when ‘Dean’ wants a hard man reputation as a bully breeder with a cool looking gangster logo, choke chains and tools attached to his muscular dogs in photos. Using ‘rare’ colours to attract buyers… did you know those rare colours are due to adding in a whole different dog breed into the mix… ?

Genetic modification to produce different colours also produces changes in the way the brain is wired up.

The mess the country is in with dog bites and deaths is all on us. The law needs to get tougher around breeders and ownership of dogs.

Tell me which ones are the XL Bully. I’ll wait.

Can you not?

If not, how will they be able to?

How it’ll be decided is based on measurements. Height, muzzle size, things of that nature. That’s how they’ll define XL Bullys.

So if you have a litter of six dogs, and two cross a certain height threshold, they could be labelled as dangerous. For a few inches distance.

Something needs to be done. But not this.

The fact there is a photo of newborn puppies on a mat, NOT in a draft proof secure whelping box with sides shows me a lot about this breeder… 🤦🏼‍♀️
RIGHT THERE is what is wrong - clueless back yard breeders not meeting the needs of dogs. Education for breeding is everywhere, there is no excuse for doing things cheap. I’m just thankful they don’t appear to be in a shed…
If the needs aren’t met at the lowest level, what possible chance have you of them being met at the HIGHEST level where it counts?

SOCIALISATION?
DESENSITISATION?
HABITUATE?

This set up would fail UK defra standards for breeding licenses. ❌

XL BULLY DEBATE 🚨
So much in the media blaming the breed and the owners, not enough is said about the hundreds and hundreds of inexperienced, money hungry breeders of these BULLZ.
We have parentage imports from USA, with no idea of behaviour traits, their only mission is to create broad, muscular and athletic looking bullies. Imported champion lines have stupidly become a selling point in their advertising.
Champion of what? Looks… not traits. If Ted Bundy was the most physically perfect specimen of human you’ve ever seen, would you want to have off-spring with him?
These dogs have become status dogs and are irresponsibly sold to anyone who hands over the cash.
The owners are quite probably told they need to handle and control their Bully dog, asserting dominance, putting them in choke chains or such like, under socialised and not desensitised to the world around them. It’s quite the opposite of what needs to happen.
You also only have to look at a bully breeders photos to know that BULLZ are marketed as a ‘cool, mean looking dog’ which is attractive to the wrong type of owner.

THE PROBLEM WE HAVE IS WITH BREEDERS, it’s starts and ends with them.

DNA 🧬 + ENVIRONMENT 🌎 = 🐕 the dog you will have in front of you.

Puppies are not clean slates !
You often hear people say 'get a puppy they are a clean slate'

As a behaviourist and breeder I can confidently tell you this is not true. Both nature and nurture has a huge impact.
A puppy will inherit genes from its parents and these genes will impact the puppies genetic potential to behave in a particular way.
Such as :
Using aggression as a strategy to deal with difficult situations
Sociability towards people and dogs
Fearful responses
Strong instinctive behaviour to hunt, chase, grab and hold.
Trainability including the ability to learn self control as humans desire it
When people breed dogs they sometimes select for specific traits and sometimes not. If someone is breeding for a particular look or just money then these traits can become altered becoming stronger or weaker or unbalanced.

Then the puppy is born and the first 8 weeks learning with the breeder will have an huge impact on the development of all these genetic traits.

My six puppies have all come from the same parents and been reared in the same environment. They have very individual personalities. The training and socialisation they receive in their new homes will only influence the genes and first learning, it won't change their personalities.

So if you are looking for a puppy
Firstly learn about breed traits and instincts and make sure you pick a puppy that will suit your lifestyle. For example there no point getting a breed that is 'aloof with strangers' if you have 3 young children and lots of friends visiting.

Secondly meet the parents or (genes), see what they are like. Make sure you are meeting the actual parents, some people buy in puppy farmed litters and then 'hire' an adult of the same breed to pretend the puppies were bred there!!

Thirdly make sure the puppy has had plenty of early neurological stimulation and learning before it leaves the litter. Ask these questions.
1) What have the puppies seen?
2) Who and what have they met?
2) What have they learnt?
3) How have they learned to play?
4) What do they do if they get frustrated?
5) What do they do if they get bored?

A professional trainer can help support and guide you on the process of looking for a puppy. Don't wait till afterwards for help.

Prevention IS better than Cure. This goes for training and socialisation too, get a professional to help and guide you.

Puppies are building neural pathways with every experience, every day, make sure they're building ones you like.

First Learning is the strongest, make sure you get it right first time.

I am thrilled to have won two awards this year! This one in particular is for my services to the Canine breeding industry.

Dogs truly are a human’s best friend and at 'The Puppy Master', as a breeding mentor, training and behaviourist, I champion the idea of your dog living its best life. It’s an attitude I live and breathe in my training, and it’s felt by everyone on my team.
Breeders get a bad reputation. It's often because they have missed some core training opportunities of their puppies at a young age or don't have enough education on how to raise puppies the right way.
My mission this year was to empower breeders to be the BEST they can be for the new owners and their puppies they breed. There isn't enough GOOD education out there for them, so I provide it in a bespoke service tailored service to them as an individual, accounting for their time needs.

I mentored these beautiful blue roan sables Albus and Missy (first timers) through their first mating. Both dogs are extremely laid back and it was a very relaxed affair 🥰

Never neglect newborn puppy nails. They should be trimmed as soon as they feel sharp to the touch.

Puppy nails can do a lot of damage to mums tummy and ni***es, causing it to be so sore she won’t want to feed them. Sore bleeding ni***es can easily get infected.
Long nails also trap puppies in their bedding and make it difficult to get around. It can limit mobility which is needed for feeding time.
Puppy nails can also catch on something and be ripped clean off, causing them a substantial amount of pain and possible vet treatment.

Only the end hooks of the nail needs to come off, be very careful to not get any lower so to avoid the blood vessel that’s inside them or worse…

If puppies pull their foot away during the process, this is clear communication they are uncomfortable with the process. Move to another foot so you don’t cause them any prolonged stress. We need their nail clipping experiences to not be forced, but slow, gentle and listening to their body language so that when they are adults, it is an experience they are not frightened of.

TIP❗️Morning cleaning routine!

It’s essential to clean the whelping area once maybe twice daily. The cleaner you can keep the whelping box, the easier it is more me to toilet train puppies before they leave… as they grow puppies don’t like to sleep in soiled bedding unless forced. This is when new owners will see a lot of toileting on bedding as it becomes a habit picked up from the breeder. Prevent the habit = toilet trained puppies.

“Why do you breed?”
The question that every breeder gets asked at some point.

For me I keep in touch with every single owner of every litter, some of them are dog trainers or competing dog sport enthusiasts. They know I will go the extra mile to ensure they get the puppy they need for the job they want it do. It’s videos like this that make me so proud! Cookie came 4th in this competition ❤️

OVULATION TESTING 🐕

My girls have vaginal cytology testing when they are in the season that they will be mated. This test will show the optimum timing for visits to the stud.
Testing is a necessary cost to ensure not only that you aren’t wasting your time and stud money, but it can also help maximise your litter sizes.
Using a stud on the wrong day can end up with a very small litter size or worse no litter at all.
I use Wabluspets - Joanna for all my cytology and scanning needs rather than a vet. This is because I have seen years and years of vets blood ovulation testing giving inaccurate results to some of my mentored clients. Some vets test results come back too late also… I’d always recommend you use an experienced canine ovulation specialist first and foremost.

I don’t do things in halves. Two girls, 6 days apart when started their seasons and both of them are ready to mate the day after each other. So I will be having double trouble litters over the summer ☀️😃

𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙿𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚊𝚝𝚊𝚕 𝙿𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚘𝚍

The prenatal period suggests that pregnant mothers who are subjected to heightened, prolonged stress are more inclined to birth puppies with higher stress hormones, rendering them more likely to be more emotional and reactive in stressful situations later in life (𝘏𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦 1970)

A test to prove this theory for dogs was conducted using 5 Beagles, who were subjected to separate trials (𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸) and their puppies were then later tested on their responses and learning abilities at 8 weeks old. The result was the same of that occurred for humans, monkeys and rats, 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙙𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙙 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙤𝙣 𝙥𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙚𝙨.

As a canine behaviourist, when you look at stress or problems with dogs we look back at the history - right to how the puppies were raised with a ＢＲＥＥＤＥＲ. How were the puppies raised? How much did you see as an owner? Did you meet the parents? How many dogs did they own? Where were the puppies raised? So many questions to ask but unfortunately not a lot of owners can answer them well...

What determines a good breeder and a bad breeder is how much work they put in and the 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 they have to raise the PARENT and the PUPPIES with consideration of the outcomes later in the dogs life, thus helping to eliminate the possibility of behaviour problems which could lead to the dog being re-homed.

Dog breeders –adopt don’t shop is the phrase we hear a lot. It’s the phrase that stamps on our good work and makes us feel like we should throw ourselves into a bucket of manure. It can bring down your self-worth in three seconds flat. All that great work we do for our puppies and raising our beloved dogs, which are pets first and foremost. As a former PETA member, even as a breeder, the 'adopt don’t shop' phrase is something I can ignore because without breeders, we wouldn’t have dogs at all, let alone all the different breeds we have to date.

So let's discuss this for a moment! A human’s most favourite pet companion is a dog. 59% of the adult population in the UK own a pet in 2021 according to the last stats drawn by Statista.com, 33% of them are Dogs leading at the top of the scoreboard. Now imagine nobody was allowed to breed, everyone bought a rescue dog who was neutered, in years to come there would be no more dogs in the UK. Rescue dogs are not suited to all families of course, many responsible rescues will not re-home dogs to those who have children under the age of 12 and for very good reason. Just look at what happened to the poor 17 month old toddler just yesterday, mauled to death by a dog they had only homed for a week (𝘯𝘰 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘺𝘦𝘵).

Rescue dogs sometimes do not come with a full and complete history, therefore their emotional responses to children of all ages are unknown and can’t be guaranteed either. This leaves many families with the inability to adopt a dog from a rescue center, their plans for their children to grow up with a canine companion are stopped in their tracks. There are also so many other reasons rescue centres will not allow Joe Bloggs to swagger on in and collect any old dog, like a pet shop service. This leaves the dreaded likes of gumtree and pets4homes to thrive unfortunately and anyone can re-home their dog on those pages, sometimes without the knowledge of who is suitable to take on their dog (or the care!).

So, ‘adopt don’t shop’ does not work in the real world, let the great ethical breeders shine through and produce healthy, bomb proof, characteristic puppies whom have been socialised, desensitised and have been through vigorous habituation before they leave for new homes.

If you can put your hand on your heart and say you know you are doing everything possible for the care in raising your puppies – YOU ARE A WINNER and never doubt that!
