Had another great couple of days trimming the residents at Helmsley Equine Retirement Livery. They are such a sweet bunch and the staff go above and beyond for these ponies (who deserve every bit of it 😁). Even spotted hand picked hedgerow herbs being hung out to feed later 🌿⭐️😍

How it started… how it’s going 😄

This beautiful young Warmblood has been under my care for a couple of trim cycles now and at only two years old she is growing into a lovely, well mannered young horse that I enjoy visiting. It just shows what patience and a kind approach can do to give youngsters a great start with their education (thank you to her fabulous owner). And I also suspect she’s going to have some lovely feet too. 👏🏻

Cedar

This beautiful boy spent most of his career racing in France and Malta (Le Trot) before coming to the UK to meet his super dedicated owner. Off came his shoes and with the help of a great diet, hoof boots, short trim cycle and correct movement he is well on his way to having great, functioning feet. It also helps that he is a lovely character and a pleasure to trim! ⭐️❤️🐴

Brilliant Bob
Here are some before and after pics of Bobs huge feet 😁💪🏻 as you can see, there is still lots to work on but there is change for the better. With the help of his lovely owner we have worked hard to get on top of his thrush, made dietary changes to improve horn quality and reduced his trim cycle to help with those cracks/splits. Definitely heading in the right direction and he is much better for having his feet handled now. ⭐️

AUTUMN GRASS FLUSH 🌱🌱

With all the rain we've had in the UK, coupled with the still warm temperatures, the grass will flush.

More grass is welcome for many, but just take care with your susceptible horses and ponies e.g. good doers, overweight, PPID, EMS, laminitis, PSSM1.

If in doubt, restrict.

Electric fencing and grazing muzzles are two useful restriction methods.

HOW IS YOUR PASTURE HOLDING UP?

Here in the UK I can't remember having so little rain - and such high temperatures - over the past few weeks. Many pastures are looking a lot less green than usual.

Grass will come back when the rain returns but in the meantime here's a few snippets and tips to help you:

🌱 Don't assume no nutrition in yellow dry-looking grass. It can be higher in sugar than green, growing grass and can still supply significant calories
🌱 If you're running out of grass, offer supplementary forage in the field - do this every day to keep the diet consistent and be sure to introduce and increase any hay or haylage gradually
🌱 Monitor your horse to assess their needs - their condition, how hungry they are, how many piles of droppings they're passing compared to normal - don't just assume they have nothing to eat in their field
🌱 Don't worry - keep a close eye on your horse and adjust their diet and management accordingly. The pasture will come back once the rain comes (and it will!)

A great set of rock crunching feet that came out of winter a bit worse for wear. They are looking and working really well now the thrush has been treated and the capsule shift managed with a regular trimming schedule 🐴🤩

⚠️🌞 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 🌞⚠️

It is important during hot weather to ensure your horse is kept cool and hydrated so that they don’t suffer from heatstroke or colic. Here are some practical tips on how to avoid your horse suffering in the heat:

🟢 Make sure your horse has access to clean, fresh water at all times. Horses can drink up to 30 - 50 litres of water per day, but may increase in hot weather.
🟢 Encourage your horse to keep hydrated by putting apples in the water bucket, offering them a sloppy mash or offering flavoured water - there are several products available that are designed to encourage horses to drink.
🟢 Soaking hay or feeding haylage can provide extra hydration.
🟢 Ensure that your horse receives the necessary vitamins and minerals it needs in its feed to supplement any loss through sweating.
🟢 Ensure your horse has access to shade or stable them in a cool building during the day.
🟢 Keep your horse cool by hosing them down or using buckets of cold water all over their body.
🟢 If you choose to exercise your horse, this should only take place during cooler hours such as in the early morning. Make sure you cool down your horse afterwards by hosing them down.
🟢 Prevent sunburn by using factor 50 sun block on any pink skinned areas.
🟢 Avoid transporting your horse in very hot temperatures or consider making your journey during cooler hours.

𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗵𝗮𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
❌ Weakness
❌ Increased temperature (normal temperature should be 37.5-38.5°C)
❌ High respiratory and heart rate (normal respiration rate should be 12-16 breaths per minute/normal heart rate should be 30-45 beats per minute)
❌ Lethargy
❌ Dehydration
❌ Dry mucous membranes in the mouth - they should be a pink salmon colour and have a slimy feel to them

So happy to announce I have passed my Stage 2 Practical exam in Equine Podiatry!! It has involved a lot of hard work and late night studying, assignments, assessments and practicals but I am now cleared to take on my non-pathological case studies under the supervision of a fully qualified mentor. The hard work is far from over as I am only just coming towards the end of my first year and still have lots more to cover with pathologies, case studies and exams. Looking forward to sharing my case studies and progress with you all. 🎉
