Now and then I like to include a little bit of my studies you may find interesting, especially potential puppy parents. 🐾🐾

Social deprivation syndrome often results from stressful prenatal or neonatal environments, traumatic situations such as inappropriate handling to lack of vital life lessons and social skills. If a puppy is not taught how to behave in a human orientated world, he will only try his best to cope within his means in the best way he knows how. Puppies develop quickly, the brain, the nervous system, neural pathways are formed by 16-20 weeks of age. Dogs have a tremendous ability to communicate with humans, more so than their wolf forefather, during domestication this ability has grown. Genetics have an impact on our dog's development physically and emotionally, dogs have been bred for a multitude of different purposes serving humans for many years. Over generations dogs have also been bred for companionship for their owners. The dog to human relationship and formation of a bond is critical. The inability to comprehend each other leads to many dogs being euthanised or relinquished. The beginning of relationships starts with the breeder. Early socialisation has tremendous long lasting psychological benefits. Preparation for life is paramount, life provides many challenges many completely unnatural for the dog. Experiences must be positive and pleasant. The dog has a brilliant set of senses stimulating these senses engages the dog, however preparation, control, threshold and stimulation is important. Too much or too little can have detrimental consequences, great foundations are essential for building lasting bonds and future relationships in a positive manner. Puppies at 3 weeks engage with each other moving together, snuggling up together creating warmth and comfort. Their social development begins, interactions must be with dogs and humans in a kind gentle positive manner. Encountering a multitude of situations and forming positive relationships within a calm safe manner provides skills for life. Studies have demonstrated lack of good socialisation can lead to problematic behaviours, such as aggression and avoidance, as early as 6 months old. Lack of socialisation is detrimental in many ways, from owner bonds, the dog's welfare physically and mentally, stressful situations can soon escalate, behaviour can become louder and more overt as the dog try's harder to communicate and cope within a distressing situation he has not been taught to cope in. Dogs need the appropriate skills taught to them; they need guidance on how to behave in a human orientated world. Dogs have been bred for many tasks, this has been bred into them for many generations, breeds need to be compatible with their job role whether the dog is for company, guarding, herding etc. With this in mind, owners need to provide the skills required to be able to adapt to their job role, to allow them the ability and coping mechanisms to flourish. Puppies which are given the opportunities to socialise at the correct time within their development allows the dogs to de sensitise to mild stressors well within the threshold, lack of mild stress during development can cause an overload and create huge amounts of stress and inability to cope with real life situations moving into the human world away from litter mates and mum.

Socialising dogs and puppies allow the dog vital lessons, learning how to communicate, signal, play and interact on many levels, this kind of education can provide foundations for the puppy so he can apply to other situations. A playful unsocialised puppy can be quite clumsy and not able to recognise the cues presented from another dog, then quite often situations escalate through mis communication and mis understanding. Humans are quite unique yet complex, we have emotions, gestures, tones, physical differences, specific smells, and habits. puppies need to learn and grow with confidence building interactions with humans and dogs creating positive associations and bonds.

A well socialised dog has skills and knowledge, they can adapt and form tremendous relationships of mutual trust and respect in a world that is often quite peculiar.

As our pups leave for their new homes I just want to add a little note on positive training methods. A positive reinforcer involves adding something to encourage good behaviour that’s likely to be repeated, this is a tremendous method to teach puppies and adults new skills. Encouraging the behaviour, we would like to see again. Something good starts. Such as a simple command, like sit, or down rewarding with a treat, or perhaps a game with their toy. Each dog is individual, and each dog will value one reward more favourably than another. Know your dog you are training. Listening and observing the dog is paramount to creating fantastic bonds of mutual trust and respect. Positive reinforcement should also take into account reinforcement ratios and the complexity of the task in hand. Difficulty, distractions and distance should reap higher rewards to help maintain and motivate Your dogs focus and let him know he done well.
It’s been proven that dogs trained using positive reinforcement, are more obedient and display less undesirable behaviours whilst creating a fantastic relationship with your dog.
If your looking for a new family member pls message me for further details.
