Another Goldie on the team!
Whilst working with Restart Dogs at Dovegate, I got to meet a gentleman that absolutely LOVES this breed and his dream is to train one. Everytime I train a Goldie, I think of his enthusiasm and passion for them.
They really are special dogs but they all seem to carry the same traits! (Which isn't a bad thing!)

Yesterday I got to meet this boy after being called out to help with his behaviour at home.
Still being a young dog and (registered legal) XL bully, he has got boundless energy and little skills to manage this especially when he gets overly excited or overstimulated.
His team want the absolute best for him and we are putting together a plan to get their home life and relationship as well balanced and harmonic as possible (and of course while still enjoying the fun of owning a bull breed!)

"Rottweilers don't walk nicely on the lead"
And you know what? As a behaviourist who primarily works with older rotties, set in their ways, with bad habits then I'd be inclined to agree with you! And I'll tell you something else, regardless of your training methods and approaches, it can be f*cking difficult to get them on the right track!
BUT, as with all dogs, they need to be shown the way and taught before we can expect them to behave a certain way or do certain things.
The pups are coming on BRILLIANTLY with their training and I love seeing the chalk and cheese differences in them.
They did a fabulous job of alerting their family to trespassers again too so super well done to them! This is going to be such an amazing journey.

Oz and I managed to have a gorgeous training walk in the sunshine, working today on his manners and impulse control around strangers greeting him.

Gundog breeds need Gundog trainers.
Well they do, don't they?
Nah. I don't think so. If you want to compete or have a trained working gundog then yes, absolutely. Go to a reputable, experienced and well educated gundog trainer that can help you on that journey but when it comes to gundog breeds that are pets, needing help with things like lead walking, recall, obedience etc. even gundog tasks for enrichment...you just need an experienced and bloody good trainer that UNDERSTANDS these breeds and the issues they likely come with.
Someone who's worked with them AND had visible success.
Someone who's going to help YOU to understand your gundog breed and why they may be behaving the way they do.
And someone who can TAILOR the training and behavioural help to breed specifics AND the individual dog (and your lifestyle!)

Last week was just none stop and this week has been no different 🤭 Last week I went back to see my pal after his guardians have welcomed a baby into the home. He's been struggling with his excitement but also this change has brought out a lot of conflicting emotions in his so we made a plan and got to work!
I'm really pleased to hear that already things are getting better at home and he's ready to get started on the next steps in his training!
In any dog training case, I always do my best to give advice and plans that will make immediate changes, no matter how small, while we get to work 😊

Pair of puppies for training!
Back to see this absolute DREAM team, brother and sister, for lead walking, recall and obedience.
These amazing pups are pet dogs but we will be training them as property guardians too as they get older to keep their home and family safe.
Their personalities are like chalk and cheese which means they each need a different training approach to the tasks we set them but I have had the BEST afternoon with them and their owners are so committed and doing brilliantly with them.
These pups have such a bright future ahead of them, leaving their rough start to life well behind.

I was called to help with this little one as she is having some issues with her confidence on walks.
The world can be a scary and daunting place especially for dogs that haven't had much exposure and socialisation so we are just taking our time and boosting her up with training and understanding for now!
She is so affectionate and gentle, I definitely soaked up all the cuddles she was offering 🤭
I can't wait to see how she's getting on in a couple weeks!

Ivy and I had a late ⭐ training walk ⭐ this evening and I couldn't believe how much progress she's made since I saw her last.
Spaniels are very typical lead pullers. After all, their ancestors were bred to be popped on a lead and let off as soon as they saw green to do their job around prey! With this in mind, lead walking and recall are 2 of THE MOST IMPORTANT skills I work on and encourage with spaniels and their owners.
She was a tough cookie but things have really started sinking in and she's a joy to train!
*"What's a 'training walk'?" - I come to your home and collect your dog, I take them for 30, 45 or 60mins to train for the entire walk. Sort of like a mini boot camp! Then I drop them off at home to you!

What's the difference between a trainer and a behaviourist?
I originally was called to help with this little pups anxiety of being left alone (at any time) and her confidence around strangers.
This meant lots of barking, running away from guests, hyper vigilance even in the home, unable to sleep, stress at bedtime etc.
As a behaviourist, I am trained (and have years of experience!) to recognise not only the obvious issues but also look into her genetics (her family, the litter, the environment) and unpick the tiny details and signs that so often get missed.
Today we had a good catch up and a long talk explaining why her genetics AND early life experiences may be affecting her behaviour, what to do to help things immediately, what to do to help her long term and of course, how to get her in the best and most comfortable physiological place so that training will be the most effective.
Her owners have been absolutely AMAZING with her and I love seeing the moments where she is really showing off her skills in our sessions (her "place" is the most adorable thing I've ever seen) We will get there, these things take time 😊🐾

Big water baby 😂
The big lad isn't keen on this warm weather, it can be a bit too much for some dogs especially large breeds like mastiffs but I like to acclimatise him to make summers more tolerable.
He's not one for having a dunk but when it comes to digging water...he's a pro!
Some advice you can pass on to fellow dog owners:
💦 when the weather is hot, early morning and late evening walks are best
☀️ Acclimatise your dog safely with gradual and brief exposure
💦 exercise them all year round so their fitness (especially cardio health!) is in great condition to cope with temperature extremes more easily
☀️ Access to clean water at all times and encourage them to drink
💦 They may like to sunbathe, but it's important for you to monitor this!
☀️ NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG IN YOUR CAR. I don't care how brief, I don't care if the window is open and I certainly don't care about smashing a window to save a dog's life. You may see working and sport dogs spending time in vehicles online but more often than not, all measures have been taken to keep the vehicle cool and comfortable for the dog and the dog is acclimatised to spending time in there in-between work.
Keep them safe and enjoying the summertime!

I love cats! I absolutely adore them. Their arrogance, confidence, aloofness...they're really just awesome.
This is a VERY old pic of me and my old pal Margaret who is sadly no longer with us but bloody hell was she a character.
Started life as a feral cat and landed on her fat paws as the most pampered Queen there was.
I've been thinking about starting pop-in visits for those locally with cats that may need some company and care while owners are away, what do you think?

Finishing my week with such a handsome little face 🖤
I was originally called to help with puppy training (his family are already doing such a great job with him!) but we have a little more exploring to do in regards to his health alongside his training.
I'm a behaviourist first, dog trainer second so no matter how many of the same breed I work with, each dog that comes to me is an individual. I take into consideration genetics (of the breed and their bloodline), their home space, their outdoor environment, food, learning styles... everything! One size certainly doesn't fit all!
This adorable little man will have training suited specifically to his needs so his family get get the very best out of their life with him and he grows into the incredible dog that he is!

I am feeling like a very lucky trainer/behaviourist this week ☺️
Today we welcomed this little lady to the team for help with her nervousness when on walks.
Her owner called for help after she has started to refuse to go for a walk which of course is cause for concern.
After running through some medical checks, it became clear that she is lacking confidence after some really scary encounters on her walks in the past.
It didn't take long for her mum to be working wonders practicing the training and we got our for a lovely adventure walk in just our short time together!
She's one of the SWEETEST staffies I've ever met (to be honest...they all are) but my word she's clever too!
Can't wait to hear how they're getting on 😊

Our first session together today and I instantly got to see the personalities of this brother and sister duo.
After a rocky start in their very early life, they've well and truly landed on their paws with their new guardians and are already showing lovely manners around people (I got so many cuddles...best day every)
They will grow to be not only pet dogs and super social but also property guardians to keep the home safe and deter unwanted 'visitors'

I love staffies so much, one of my first loves. Their bolshy and busy movements, unapologetic love and affection and of course they love training too!

She's moving up North (with my family) so we had a little fun at Rudyard Lake yesterday for old times sake. I'm not crying, you are 😭
I LOVE working with spaniels. They're so busy and energetic and just love to train. Main struggles I've noticed:
🐕 NOTORIOUSLY pulley on the lead!
🐕 Can go deaf around small animals
🐕 Lots of energy at all times
🐕 Recall can be non-existent

I've been chocker with training and behaviour walks just recently and I'm loving it!
These sessions are great if you struggle for time for training and working on your dogs behavioural issues and would like 'top up' lessons for them in the week (or weekend!)
They can also be used as a break if your dog has particularly challenging behaviour or training needs too 😊
"How does it work?"
-We have a chat about what your dog needs from these sessions
-We choose whether a training walk or behavioural walk would be most suitable
-We book a day and time
-I pop round to pick up your little companion and away we go!
"What does it involve?"
-The entire time I have your dog, we will focus on their training or behavioural issues and having fun whilst out!
-I can either walk them locally to you or I'll take them somewhere in my car for an adventure
"How long are the sessions?"
-Training walks can be 30mins - 45mins
-Behaviour walks can be 30mins - 1hr
-Adventures - 1hr - 3hrs

Today I met a new member of the DOG crew 😊
This little lady's owner has asked for help with all areas of puppy life to allow her to grow into the best dog she can be!
Today we worked on greeting guests and table manners which she took to brilliantly by taking herself off for a nap 🤭

Who doesn't love a rottie 😊🖤
This handsome boy came to me for help with some reactive behaviour on lead towards dogs and some people. His behaviour is very true to rottweiler genetics so there's lots of work to do to improve his ability to ignore dogs and people and to make his walks a partner activity with his guardian rather than being a one man band!
Towards the end of our session things were starting to click so with homework practice and our next session coming up, I can't wait to see how he's getting on!

Whistle recall! Just testing the sharpness of his whistle recall or 'emergency recall' as I call it with some clients. He was working away on a tug pull down the bottom of the field which is his favourite so he was nicely called off that! I love using a whistle for recall particularly with more independent dogs! This is something I'm teaching a lot of just recently and it's a really simple process but like all dog training, something that needs commitment and consistency from everyone in the household. ⭐Behaviour Walk⭐ with Finn 😊 We had a great time together today! I've captioned the video so you can see what's going on but to recap: -First we warm up with some training and basic all over warm ups -Patience and practicing 'wait' before being released -"place" training (ideal for photos and dogs that struggle around distractions and triggers) -Confidence and resilience training! Engage! First training walk with my good mate Oz this morning to help his engagement and lead walking. What are you seeing? -I wait for him to give eye contact, I reward -I wait for him to seek out my face when I turn away, I reward Fast forward some extra bits, build up some nice duration et voilà! Lovely little loose lead! Of course this hasn't fixed the issue but it's how we are going to fix it! I was already in a good mood this morning despite being exhausted but this lad boosted me even more!
I'm baaaaack! A little late but I am! I've spent the past few days catching up on enquiries but still getting round to some so thank you for your patience! Here's an awesome update from this gorgeous lad and his mum. His mum won't mind me telling you that his severe lead biting, redirecting and typical 'Malinois-ness' was a huge challenge just a few months ago and if we'd have said we would be here today with a short lead AND a long lead with no biting...well. Yet here they are. Absolutely SMASHING the training together. Down stays, sit stays, patience, recall, retrieve, heelwork (not videoed). Incredible. Dog reactivity? Engage! Yesterday was a warm one but this little lady didn't let it slow her down! Her team have been working hard on her focus and engagement foundations so for session #2 we pushed forward and asked for a little more from her. She did beautifully with a dog and some other of her triggers which was amazing to see! As with all 'real world' hurdles owning a dog that can react, we came up against a super barky and defensive dog but this is an opportunity! She recovered quickly and re-engaged so well after the reaction which is super promising! Loose lead and big dogs...it's a must! So we welcomed this beautiful lad to the DOG team recently for help with his lead walking skills and excitement when out and about. Being a BIG DOG, pulling on the lead is not only exhausting for the person at the end of it, but also can cause long term issues with their joints and muscle development. Being more prone to health issues in these areas anyway, we got to work and he absolutely loved it! It's a pain isn't it? No matter what size your dog is, jumping up can be a pain in the arse! With this lad, we have a combination of excitement, frustration, emotional conflict, age and a heavily rewarded habit of jumping up. Now, I never claim to give quick fixes but if this is the difference of a year long habit within 10minutes of training...I'd say it's worth it, right? Ending the week last week with this fluffy lad working on his lead walking skills and behaviour around other dogs. In typical cockapoo fashion (you read that right) he is super excited and happy go lucky so we were working on keeping his attention around different distractions but especially dogs. Lots of work yet to do but he did so so well and his team have got lots to be practicing in-between sessions that's manageable and fitted for their lifestyle 😊 ⭐Luring into and rewarding a position ⭐Paying out for good work and attention ⭐Realistic goals and difficulty levels ⭐Fun! Back to work and meeting this handsome boy for his first ⭐ training walk ⭐ His owners asked me to help with his lead pulling when out on a walk as, true to spaniel nature, he pulls like a train and is super busy sniffing! I took some extra time with him at the start of our walk just to build his confidence up coming out with a stranger (hes very very social and I had so many cuddles but a new routine can sometimes be a bit daunting for some dogs!) We spent our session introducing the foundations to training, lots of bonding and using those spanner superpowers and ending with some lovely loose lead walking already! Can't wait to see him again! Functional skills ! This is my 2nd ⭐behaviour walk⭐session working with this girl on her behaviour on lead (pulling) but also reactive behaviour towards people. She's lacking confidence and feels suspicious of them so can lunge, growl and bark. We've worked on her heelwork, engagement and also if he lead goes tight, that is her cue to come back to me (so IF she pulls or reacts, the lead goes tight, that's her cue to come back or if she doesn't hear my cue, I stop, the lead goes tight, she comes back BEFORE she reacts) As long as she's by my side, she can watch if she wants to or disengage from the trigger altogether. Back to this handsome lad to crack his behaviour on the lead. His reactivity towards dogs is now virtually none-existent, his engagement is so so much better and his lead walking is really coming along. During our session we worked hard on not relying on food, timing, markers and using pace and our own body language to communicate. Today's ⭐ behaviour walk ⭐ was back with my beautiful friend. She's now come into season which can cause some behavioural changes in bitches (and local males) so I was sure to take extra precautions today; a shorter but busier walk and managing expectations of what we could achieve in the session. As expected, she was super distracted and very VERY busy but we had some really great progress together! Branching out! Our ⭐behaviour walk⭐this week was pushing his skills and confidence to walking on the road with the same engagement we get on the carpark (increasing the difficulty!) We came up against a few of his triggers (super noisy wagons/tractors and some people but he handled it really well. He was a little spooky for the session but just look at him go! So proud of him. What a gorgeous way to end my week! This beautiful girl started her first session of ⭐ The Training Package ⭐ with me today to help with greeting people and lead walking. She absolutely ADORES people and, in typical bull breed fashion, wants to shower everyone with kisses and love so we got to walk on her walking skills, engagement and impulse control.
