Another hot one today!
Make sure to help keep your dogs cool by avoiding walks during the hottest parts of the day, providing shade, water, and chilled snacks.

Mental stimulation in the form of training, scatter feeding, and sniffy games can help keep them occupied during the day.

Just a handsome Goldie on his journey to becoming a Pet Assisted Therapy dog!
We've worked through some challenges together, such as lead pulling and barking when greeting other dogs, and his progress has been remarkable.

His calm demeanor and loving nature are perfect for bringing comfort to those in need.
Keep up the amazing work! 🙌

Meet Norman the Viszla and Mildred the Bully!

Norman, once an overly exuberant boy with a tendency for reactive behavior, and Mildred, a typical Bully breed with selective hearing, have made remarkable progress in our training sessions.
Through one to one training, individual obedience practice, loose lead walking training, and the support of our group classes, they've overcome their challenges and now enjoy walks together with confidence, happiness, and reliability.
Well done to their owners smashing their training, its paid off! 💪💪

Meet Evie the Jackapoo. She's a pretty little thing with a big attitude.
She wasn't too fond of strange dogs, and preferred to be leading the way on walks rather than enjoying them at a more leisurely pace.

As one of my walk and train clients, she's come on leaps and bounds. She can be around strange dogs on walks, she recalls even in the presence of other dogs, and walking her is much more enjoyable now that she keeps a loose lead.

If you want your dog to be walked AND trained for both exercise and improved behaviour over time, feel free to get in touch!

Paws for Permission 🐶

Not everyone wants your dog to approach them. Their dog may be old, sick, injured, reactive, in training, or the owner might just want some alone time with their dog.

Always ask the questions below, and if the answer is "no," don't question it. Just recall your dog, put it on a lead, and keep walking.

Be kind, be courteous.

It's been a long break from social media but this was too nice to not share.
A lovely update from two dedicated owners who've both really put the time and effort into training their dogs.

When we first started I was told that a previous trainer said their dogs would never walk together on lead. Now look at them! Walking together off lead and under control.
For one dog this is a huge deal due to her obsession with the other dog. For the other is a huge deal due to his reactivity towards strange dogs.

They have a solid recall, they're reliable off lead, and they regularly walk together both on and off lead.
Swipe on my Instagram post to see their updates videos.

Well done guys! 💪💪

With Bonfire night fast approaching, and New Years Eve looming not long after, many pet owners are starting to dread the following months.

However it doesn't have to be a time full of stress, for you or your dog.

Starting early and desensitising your dog to the noises can help to drastically reduce their stress, fear, and reactivity on the days when the fireworks are at their peak.

If you need help or advice regarding this or any other issues you may be having then please get in touch via our website(www.trainedandtamed.co.uk) or DM us on here, or Instagram.

Sit means sit!

This phrase sums up a behaviour that's very useful. An implied stay.

An implied stay means that when you tell your dog to sit or lay down, it will remain in the position asked of it until you say otherwise.

This means you don't need to teach a stay command, you don't need to back away while repeatedly begging your pup to stay put, and you don't need to keep repeating the command "sit...siiit...SIT!"

The benefit of this is that your dog is stable and reliable in each position you put them in and will happily stay there until you give them their reward marker(a click from the clicker, or a verbal cue) or release them with another command such as "okay" or "break"

If this sounds like something you wish your dog could do then get in touch with us via our website(www.trainedandtamed.co.uk) or DM us on here or on Instagram.

Mya's progress

Mya used to bark at the door and new people, she was nervous of loud or sudden noises, and she picked and chose what to listen to when her owners asked something of her. Not only this but one of her owners couldn't even walk her due to her pulling!

Over the course of five sessions we've worked on her impulse control, basic obedience, and not pulling her lovely owners all over the place. She's come on leaps and bounds and is a much more confident, relaxed, quieter and more reliable companion now.

Kongs are a great toy and a great tool to have available to you.

You can stuff them with tasty treats, use them as a chew toy, or even throw them and their unique shape will cause them to bounce in a way that your dog will love.

A stuffed Kong is a great tool to keep your dog distracted, to tire them out, and to make being in certain situations more enjoyable. You can even freeze some fillings to give your dog a cool treat on a hot day.

If your dog is playing with a Kong, whether stuffed or not, it means they're not getting into mischief. They're occupied with something fun and enjoyable that YOU gave them.

There are plenty of guides and videos about how to stuff a Kong, but even just using it instead of a ball will bring some enrichment into your dog's life because the way it moves is completely unpredictable to them.

How to cut your dog's claws safely:

Pick up a paw and gently squeeze a toe, top and bottom, to extend your dog's nail.
Clip only the tip of the nail, as shown on slide two, straight across and not at an angle.

Avoid clipping past the curve of the nail or you risk hitting what is called the quick. A cut to the quick is very painful and will bleed profusely.

For dogs with dark nails, watch for a chalky white dot in the middle of the nail after each cut.

After each cut give your dog a treat to create positive associations. Initially you may have to give a treat each time your dog let's the clippers touch them, it depends on the severity of your dog's touch sensitivity.

Doesn’t pull, does as she’s told every time, ignores other doggies until told otherwise, the list goes on… and she’s only just turned 5 months old 😱"

Teaching your dog to love being handled.

It's important for all dogs, young and old, to accept and enjoy being handled. The reason for this is it allows you or the vet to thoroughly check them over with ease. It also makes the groomers life easier by making the dog comfortable in having their paws, ears and tail handled. All of this combined can help keep your dog happy and healthy well into old age.

To teach your pup (8-16 weeks) to love being handled, simply touch their extremities and give them a reward whilst still holding it, you can then let go. Repeat this for each paw, the tail, the ears, and the lips.

To teach older dogs the above method may work depending on their tolerance of you touching them. If they're highly intolerant then a more cautious approach is necessary; tap an extremity of theirs gently and give them a treat. Do this in short sessions to keep their frustration low. You will, over time, be able to progress onto the same approach as for puppies.

06/07/2021

Proper fitment of a slip lead is so important for the welfare of your dog and allows you to get the most out of the lead itself.

In order to fit yours correctly, follow the advice below:
The loop of the slip lead should look like a sideways letter 'P'.

Place this loop over the dogs head ensuring the loop keeps pointing downwards.

The loop should be very high up on the dogs neck, practically just below the dogs ears.

Tighten the stopper to a point where you can fit one finger in the loop, this ensures the lead won't slip down the dogs neck and also won't be uncomfortable.

If your dog looks uncomfortable you may have made the lead too tight. Pull the stopper back a fraction of an inch. Think of this lead like a belt, if it’s too loose it won’t do its job.

You now have a correctly fitted slip lead and can start to use it to train your pooch.
