Reindeer reach helps to facilitate full range of motion, by extending through the poll and neck. This is ideal if stiffness is present through the poll, shoulder or with active stretching into a contact.⁣
⁣
𝐇𝐨𝐰: Stand facing the horse, using the bait to encourage the horse to extend their neck and stretch in an upwards direction. If the horse keeps walking forwards a fence or stable door can be used to stop them moving forwards.⁣
𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Hold the position for 10-15 seconds, repeat 3-4 times.⁣

Polework is important to cultivate self-control, balance, focus, suppleness, elasticity, coordination and strength in both horse and the rider. The stimulus of the pole helps the horse or rider combination to readdress the scales of training, be it for rehabilitative purposes or during progression towards jumping and competition. ⁣
⁣
𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤- Improves core stability, joint flexion and intervertebral joint spacing. ⁣
𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐭- Helps with strengthening work for the back, quadriceps and pelvic stability, which can lead to the release of the extensor chain.⁣
𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫- Tones the thoracic sling, loosens shoulder and lifts the back ⁣

Carrot stretches to the side benefit your equine partner by encouraging them to lift and flex the spine to the side and flex the neck for stability, flexibility, and suppleness. This is equivalent to a lateral crunch⁣
⁣
𝐇𝐨𝐰: To do this exercise, stand with your back to the horses’ side, in line with the girth line, use a carrot and encourage the horse to bring his head across your body and to the floor. ⁣
⁣
𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Hold the horse there for 5 seconds to start, increasing to 15 seconds as they get used to the exercise. Repeat 2-3 times.⁣
⁣
As this exercise becomes easier you can move closer to the horse’s hind end to ask for a bend.⁣

To kickstart your Christmas rehabilitation, put out some ground or raised poles to develop your canine or equine partners flexibility, strength and coordination. ⁣
⁣
𝐇𝐨𝐰: Start with a line of 4 poles. Walk your canine or equine through the poles at a relaxed pace, encouraging them to step carefully without rushing. Keep the distances smaller at first until they are comfortable. ⁣
⁣
𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: 5-6 repetitions over poles with rest in-between, if they start to knock the poles finish the exercise for the day and build repetitions up over time.⁣

A double-blinded study by Alves, Jorge and Carreira (2022) showed that photobiomodulation (laser) reduced pain levels and improved clinical findings in canines with hip osteoarthritis compared to the NSAID meloxicam.

Soft tissue injury to any tendon or ligament accounts for 13–18% of horses that require rest and time off, and is responsible for 33% of training losses and wastage in sport horses of all disciplines (Reilly, 2021).

A study by Pluim (2018) examined the effects of Class IV Laser on soft tissue injuries in 150 horses, finding:
• Improved lameness scores, with 80% sound at four weeks
• Faster return to work
• Decreased future reinjury rates

One key aspect of SEVLs visits to you includes assessing your animals posture and movement.

Here, we are looking at the sit. Although this seems a simple action, the sit can be a great way to identify subtle changes, from noticing incorrect posture to uneven weight shifting and compensations.

Dogs with chronic unaddressed issues in the knee or hock often end up with reduced range of motion and lose the ability to fully flex these joints due to pain. Long periods of disuse may result in weakened core. Thus, it is important that these subtle changes in posture are addressed through veterinary consult.

Following this process, Class IV Laser is a non invasive modality which is beneficial in supporting the alleviation of pain, reducing inflammation and stimulating cellular repair to enhance natural healing. Emma graduated from Writtle with a first-class degree in Equine Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation in 2016. Emma has continued to focus on the rehabilitation industry, from working at Fitzpatrick Referrals (Supervet) completing canine and equine lameness evaluations and caring for the rehabilitation of inpatients to managing the Equines, Goats, Sheep and Alpacas at Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare. Pain can be found in all living creatures. A contributor of this as both human and animals age is posture.

Life takes a different toll on each feline, canine, equine and human. If straightness and correct posture is not consistent, perhaps an injury that left a slight limp, a wound that left some sensitivity or a pulled shoe that seemingly caused no harm, structures will start to compensate for these external forces exerted on the body altering biomechanical movement.

Class IV laser treatment can be a beneficial tool to aid in the removal of pain, allowing your animal to have reduced muscular tension from poor posture whilst incorporating a rehabilitation plan to help promote body balance and mechanical longevity.

Class IV Laser treatment can help relieve chronic pain or muscular restrictions to allow your horse to achieve optimal performance. One of the most common issues with ridden equines is tension in the poll region.

The poll area is made up of a complex arrangement of small muscles, but also an area where many large, important muscles in the rest of the body attach. Comprehension of the equines anatomy is critical to understanding how tension in the poll causes compensations around the body, which can manifest as difficulty with contact, struggling to bend and even restrictions in hindlimb movement.
