Should all dogs go plant-based?
As a very concerned vet turned passionate environmentalist, I do believe that yes, plant-based dog nutrition is our future. I suffer from such climate and biodiversity loss anxiety (as shown in my talk at the London Vet Show recently) where I did feel myself well up with emotion and had to hold back the tears.
Plant-based dog nutrition removes some of that anxiety as I feel that I am at least doing something so positive.

What a little darling Leo the Pomeranian is! His story is a simple one that is echoed by all of us and spoken by his Dad:
“He is honestly the best thing that has happened to us. He has been plant-based since he was about 6 months old. The vets were shocked when we told them because he is perfectly healthy ” 🌱🙌
Leo is sure to stay perfectly healthy and loving his nutritious food! The only change we all want is for vets to realise the value of having a dog on a nutritionally complete plant-based diet for their health….but not to worry I am working on it using your healthy beautiful dogs as proof!!

Bearded Collies have always held a special place in my heart as I used to own one as a teenager, so when Mojo and Smudge's Dad contacted me to change their food to plant-based for ethical reasons, I felt extra happy helping his 2 gorgeous dogs! ❤🐾🌱
29/11/2023
What a success to have a vet's dog respond so well to plant-based food as it means that she will now be recommending it to all her patients - hoorah 🙌🌱🐾
27/11/2023
He's called Ruff and as a family, we just think he's the best little dog in the world ❤🐾🌱

Something to make us all smile to start the week 🐾
It is true however that our plant-based dogs have a much more diverse gut microbiome which could result in a completely unique smell when dogs are doing their 'bottom sniffing' 🙌🌱

Just be Kind Dog Food at London Vet Show
What an emotional rollercoaster attending the London Vet Show for 2 days this week and giving a talk. All I can say is watch this space as the growing support that I received from some key individuals balanced the overwhelming despair I felt being there and witnessing the growth of the raw food industry!
Give A Dog A Bean was the most exciting product there!
It gave me a food that I could hand to as many vets as possible to prove how palatable and nourishing plant-based complete dog food was (and your gorgeous dogs on the posters at my Just be Kind stand won them over to visit!)
I returned home emotionally drained, but also feeling so much more positive about the future of plant-based dog nutrition with the contacts that were made

How we love this review about how tasty Give A Dog A Bean is from April's Mum (who normally homecooks for both her rescue Greyhounds)
"Well so much for me thinking that this will be so useful as a back-up to my home cooking. I have never seen such a manic reaction from two lazy dogs, Joe took them out for their walk this am and I had their meal waiting for them when they got home, they must have smelled the food as they came through the front door and the two of them raced through the hall into the kitchen nearly knocking me over, they've scoffed their food as if this was the first meal they've had in a long time.
I wish you could have been here to see them, it really was hilarious they were like dogs possessed, licking their bowls then swapping bowls.
Unbelievable, the last time they've run like this must have been when they were racing😂😂 Joe told me that I'd better get some more Give a Dog a Bean ordered - done!"

🙌Massive Monday smiles all round as GIVE A DOG A BEAN a huge success!!
🫘It was formulated to be the healthiest dog food diet that we could make with wholefood plant powered ingredients in just the right proportions and nothing lacking....but we had no idea how incredibly palatable it was to dogs...they all have such good taste and know what's good for them!🫘
“Boston loved the tinned food and woofed it down in one go. It’s actually the best smelling dog food ever.
Impressive stuff, so very well done for creating this lovely product!” Susy in Swindon who sent us the lovely photo of beautiful Boston 💚

**GIVE A DOG A BEAN complete plant-based tinned food is available to buy for your dog 🫘**
Rescue Starla's Mum so kindly sent us this
“Thought you’d like this photo of Starla’s reaction to the new food.
Well….she wouldn’t even wait for it to hit the bowl as I scooped it out the tin, she was licking it out the can as soon as I opened it and then off the spoon.
Really didn’t give me a chance to dish it in the bowl. I’ve actually never seen her react to food like this before.
She’s normally so reserved – she REALLY loves this one!” 🙌
She also assures us that no tongues were harmed in the taking of the photos as Starla was so desperate to eat the food that she couldn't get it out of the tin fast enough!!

With the never ending obsession of celebrating with fires and fireworks at this time, we must be aware of our pets and their sensitivities.
With the knowledge that our dogs are full blown empaths with the capacity to absorb all our emotions – both happy and sad, it is even more important to treat them with the utmost respect and with as much kindness as we can. They never expect anything of us, but they have acutely sensitive emotions that we need to be aware of.
Here are some pointers to show kindness and sensitivity towards our pets at this time and everyday –
At this noisy time of fireworks, and at anytime, we advise on how to be the kindest pet owner that you can be!

Some fantastic news from the United Nations!
The COP28 Presidency has announced that two-thirds of the food served at the upcoming UN climate summit in Dubai will be vegan and vegetarian, a first for a COP event. They have also committed to making the food affordable for all delegates.
This decision sends a strong message about addressing the climate crisis, showcases the possibility of hosting large events without relying on meat and dairy, and promotes awareness of the benefits of plant-based diets. It is expected to influence other events globally.
It would be amazing for COP28 to go fully vegan - one day!!🌱

What a happy and inspiring experience to be invited to talk to vet students (all organised by them)…and how they gave me just SO much hope for our future!
They had listened to a talk the previous evening by Hills who had brought some cake to tempt the students into listening about the only nutrition advice they get at vet school – from these big corporate pet food companies using their massive marketing budgets to bully their way into the minds of our future!
How fortunate I felt to be invited to give these bright young people some hope with everything that I had to say.
I had rushed to our local Tesco before the talk, and stocked up on Oreos, Biscoff biscuits, Rowntree fruit pastilles and jelly tots – yes all vegan and all delicious!
As these sweet snacks were being passed around and there was a general buzz in the lecture hall as they opened their laptops and began browsing their phones, I started the talk by saying to them....Read more here -
Hi Arielle, Thank you so much for coming this evening, it was a fantastic talk! We’d love to have you back to do another talk! Many thanks VetSoc Surrey

"Vegan food completely got rid of Rodney’s dark red stains around his mouth. I don’t know what causes it but he looks so much healthier and better now with such a soft coat.” 🙌💚
“Rodney has Solo Vegetal as his main food then he had lots of bits of veg as treats. His favourite is the cauliflower stem and celery sticks. He has been known to raid our vegetable patch!
He is a tripod (only 3 legs), so it’s important for him to stay slim. I think his muscle tone is very good and he remains a good weight. He still enjoys climbing mountains and being active.
He has had vegan food only for 4 years now and counting, and his coat has never been better. It has also helped in calming his allergies – we are still not 100% sure what these are caused by. As he is getting older (10 this year) he has not developed any long term health conditions." 🙌🐾❤

Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton has revealed that his dog Roscoe is "fully vegan".
He wrote to his fans: "Hey guys, so Roscoe is now fully vegan".
Lewis said: "His coat is much softer, his swollen paws have healed up, he is no longer limping with pain of arthritis and his breathing has opened up."
"Super happy with the result and he is too," he added.
Lewis Hamilton has been a vegan diet advocate for many years. He says that adopting a vegan diet is the "only way to truly save our planet".
Warning his fans about the environmental consequences of meat-eating, he said that "agriculture farming" was a huge pollutant, and the meat and dairy industry was responsible for "deforestation, animal cruelty" causing "our seas and climate decaying on a daily basis".
He used to say that adopting a vegan diet is very easy: "Going vegan "can be done so quickly...all you have to do is put your mind to it." 🙌🌱🐾

Monday smiles! Yes, adding in more wholefood plant-based foods into our diet (and our dog's diet), is one of the easiest and healthiest ways to lose weight!
I speak from experience here having struggled with my weight all my life and now only in my 50's finally feeling like I have some control and can avoid all those biscuit and cake aisles when I go shopping 🙌💚🌱

What a treat to have a group of lovely ladies and their darling rescue Greyhounds outside our local Tesco this morning. I coudn't resist a cuddle....and yes I did want to adopt all of them 💚

As a vegan it makes me feel so happy that I no longer have to feed my dog Cali meat, she loves her home cooked food and I enjoy cooking it…
Your knowledge and kindness and personal investment has been key to our success
Thank you so much"

Prof Knight’s groundbreaking studies were published on the 5th October that gave us such a simple way of quite literally ‘saving our planet’. His results showed that the world’s dogs and cats consume around 9% of all land animals killed for food, or around 7 billion animals annually, as well as billions of fish and aquatic animals. Prof Knight calculated that if all the world’s dogs went vegan, it would save more greenhouse gases than all those emitted by the UK, land larger than Mexico, freshwater exceeding all renewable freshwater in Denmark, and would feed around 450 million additional people – more than the entire EU! What a simple and remarkable way to protect our fragile world…and when Ruff and I were called by BBC Radio 4 to be interviewed by Evan Davis on Thursday, and then on Friday, we were whisked back into London (in a chauffeur driven Tesla for Ruff and I), to appear on Jeremy Vine’s Live show on Channel 5!….it was the stuff that dreams were made of as finally our plant-based dogs would be able to give a voice to the millions of voiceless animals and fish killed every second to feed the meat-based dogs! Watch Jeremy Vine announce Prof Andrew Knight's remarkable statistics on national TV. #justbekinddogfood #topvegandogfoods #justbekindsupplement #solovegetal #vegdog #vegan4dogs #dogslovehownd #fleetfulrecipekits #noochypoochy #wearedogood #thepackpet #bonzadog #Omnipet #omega3algaeoil #golddustjointsupplement #JeremyVine #channel5 #profandrewknight
Quoted from article in Newsweek - "Eager to protect the planet, veterinarian Dr. Arielle Griffiths went vegan four years ago at the age of 52. She was also concerned about the pet obesity epidemic, so she decided her dog Ruff should make the change and try to eat ethically too." "As a vet, I really wanted to do something about it," Griffiths told Newsweek. She set about finding the perfect diet for Ruff and now feeds him homemade vegan meals and is also director of the Just Be Kind dog food company. Interest in vegan diets for animals has surged in recent years, driven by a steady rise in pet ownership as well as environmental, health and welfare concerns. Woohoo - our 30th ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Google Review yesterday 🙌 🐾 "We rescued Jessie Grace from Romania. She is a Lucas Terrier, adult (7-8 years) . Arrived in a pretty bad way after living on the streets & travelling 4 days in a van with 20 other rescues. So far she has been 3 months on whole food plant based food. She is much calmer and eats all her food morning & night. Also enjoys the biscuits during the day. Her coat is softer, doesn’t smell either. I make some of her food according to Arielle’s recipe, also buy the tins & biscuits. Very grateful for this advice & these products." 🥰 #justbekindsupplement #justbekinddogfood #vegandogs #topvegandogfood #solovegetal #gretadogfood #greencrunch #omega3algaeoil #golddustjointsupplement
I've just been listening to the really lovely plant powered doctor, Doctor Gemma Newman talking about the fishing industry and why as humans we should NOT be eating fish for environmental reasons. And I'm going to echo what she said and explain it as well why we should absolutely NOT be feeding our pets our dogs and our cats ANY fish products at all, Anything that comes from the ocean including crushed shellfish that is found in every single dog joint supplement. It's made of crushed shellfish and contains chondroitin...and these are the reasons - 37000 fish are killed every second in our ocean! And because the oceans are so depleted, the main form of fishing now is called ‘bottom trawling’ where they drag enormous nets along the bottom of the ocean floor which damages and obviously kills any crustaceans, mammals, or fish that are caught in these nets. And what it does is it damages the coal that is on the bottom of the ocean floor which is a huge carbon 'sink' And by damaging this carbon, it releases more methane into our atmosphere than the entire aviation industry put together! And this is from the bottom trawling fishing industry! Not only that, but the fishing industry leave all their fishing nets in the sea when discarded and there's more fish-related fishing pollution in our oceans than there is plastic which is astounding! So the solution is…..and there IS a solution because what we give our dogs is nothing to do with fish 🙌 We take this as a family Omega 3 Algae Oil! We've sourced the one with the highest levels of DHA and EPA, with EPA being the important one for your dog's joints. A lot of the other Omega 3 Algae oils don't contain this valuable EPA. So we formulated the UK's very first cruelty free joint supplement called GOLD DUST which contains NO fish product at all but contains very high levels of all the ingredients that your dog needs that is sustainably made in the UK for your dog 👏🐾💚 #golddustjointsupplement #omega3al

Want your business to be the top-listed Pet Store/pet Service?
Your dog’s health is our passion
Arielle Griffiths BVSc MRCVS Vegan Vet and pet owner
I am passionate about helping owners with their pets. I am a practising GP vet based in the UK, a pet owner, a mother and a forces wife, and I fully understand the strength of the human-animal bond. I choose to only consult as I love it and I am fascinated by owners and their love for their pets as I relate to all of it!
My journey as a vegan vet came from a passion to help owners with their overweight pets. We are an army family and we were posted abroad for 7 years. It meant moving home every 2 years with 4 children, dogs, cats, guinea pigs and even a chicken Coco who lived in 4 different countries with us as we loved her so much!
Upon returning to the UK after 7 years away, I was struck by how obese the pet population had become and how owners were overfeeding their pets out of love. After one particularly emotional day where I had to put 4 dogs to sleep for either being too overweight that they couldn’t get up, or obesity related issues such as cancer; I returned to my family and vowed to do something about this crisis as it really affected me.
I registered as a business called Slimming Pets Ltd and I threw myself passionately into dog nutrition and human behaviour. I completed as many nutrition courses as I could and I listened to each and every client who walked through the door. There is so much differing information out there for us as pet owners with so much of it being dictated by the large pet food companies as they can afford the most on advertising. We are taught so little about nutrition at vet school as it is a given that the pet food companies have it all sorted for us and we just need to feed their foods, but as a Mum and pet owner and a scientist, this wasn’t good enough for me – especially listening to the concerns of my clients. I have learnt so much just by listening to you the pet owner.
Every bit of research that I completed to find the healthiest diet for our dogs all pointed to a plant-based diet.
I contacted the top UK vet nutritionists in the country for advice but they referred me to the US and supplements there as even they had not researched this avenue as there is too much money in the UK pet food meat industry.
Having lived in Germany for a few years in forces accommodation and with a smattering of german, I turned there for advice from top vet nutritionists as they seemed to be well ahead of us in the UK with regards to pet nutrition with plant-based feeding and this is where I made contact with the wonderful team at VEGDOG.DE. They had received €125 000 of funding in 2018 when they bravely pitched their quality plant-based food to the equivalent of the Dragon’s Den. They are a young, dynamic and passionate team with the talented vet and nutritionist Lisa Walther developing all their foods and supplement. I feel humbled having made contact with them and now working with them.
As you have read, Ruff and I have only been vegan for over a year and it has been such a journey. There is constantly something new to try with plant-based feeding in both us and in our pets and I continue to listen and learn from all you dedicated dog owners out there who feel as passionately about this as I do.
As a vet, I believe in a kinder, healthier way to feed our pets that does no damage to our environment, harms no animals and uses fresh, healthy plant-based ingredients for a balanced and delicious diet .
VEGDOG have helped me to achieve all of these aims on our own family dog Ruff and my aim now is to benefit all your pets and together we can do our bit to be kind to the planet and our farmed animals too.
