So we've moved our reviews to Google and they're starting again. Our speciality is working with families who are struggling with their dog. Delighted to have helped Jack and his boxer.

Resource guarding is natural, we all do it every day when we lock our front doors.

What isn’t natural is snarling and threatening violence – us or the dog.

For some time now, our Facebook review function hasn't been working. Anyone who runs a business and has tried dealing with Meta will know that fixing problems is nearly impossible.

We have decided to concentrate all of our review efforts on Google. If we have helped your dog in the past and would like to support us with only a tiny amount of effort, perhaps you would follow the link below and leave us a review? Thanks and WOOF!

How to help a Boxer….

This handsome fellow is a 2yo Boxer. Full of life and energy in and out of the house but also highly reactive to other dogs outside the house. A highly reactive 2yo boxer is something not many people want to deal with. Imagine a hurricane, a rock concert and a nuclear explosion all at the same time during your daily walk.

We traced his anxiety back to a bad experience in daycare. Just like humans, dogs who suffer trauma early in life can be affected long term. Also, like humans, however, they can be helped.

Along with his owner, we put together a 6-week program of relaxation, training, enrichment and real-life controlled and managed exposure to dogs.

6 weeks later, he’s still not there yet, but he has made massive steps, and most importantly, his owner knows how to continue the work. Reactive dogs can appear ‘naughty’ or ‘badly trained’, whereas in reality, they are almost always scared. Even hurricane-sized Boxers.

If you and your reactive dog need help, give the specialists a call.

There is quite rightly, lots of information out there about how to protect your dog in hot weather. No daytime walks, keep hydrated, pavement temperature. Etc, etc, etc.

Nothing wrong with any of that, in fact it’s really important, but unless you’re a first-time puppy owner, you’ve heard it all before, and hopefully you have taken it all in and live by it.

But here’s a thing you may not have thought about it, but in very hot weather, your dog’s behaviour is likely to change.

How will it change? Who knows. Every dog is different but there’s every chance that he or she will be unsettled and basically unhappy. Do all the things you need to do to keep her cool, but understand that she will behave differently and so you need to match that. Be tolerant, be understanding, BE KIND. She doesn’t understand why she feels bad. She doesn’t know what high temperature is. She may be sleepy, ratty, jumpy or anythingy.

Relax and help her through it.

We’re in Britain. Normal cold and sh*tty weather is always just round the corner.

Sniffy Walks
I was walking my boy locally yesterday and in front of me was a young couple with a huge Doberman. He was in a good quality harness with a good lead. He looked very healthy and was clearly well loved and cared for. He was walking on a wide path with nobody / other dogs around. We were far enough behind that we and his owners didn’t know we were there.
Here’s the thing.
He was on a short, tight lead. Every time he tried to sniff something, the person walking him, pulled him in tight. Over the next few minutes, they would lose concentration, the lead would relax, the dog would stretch to sniff, and he would be pulled in. It was really sad to watch. Maybe they thought a big dog like that needed short tight control. I have no idea, but it was sad to watch.
You will already know that a dog’s primary sense is its nose. For us, it's eyes, but for a dog, it’s the nose.
When we want to relax or do something enriching, we will often watch a movie, play a game, read a book or put on a box set. The dog has no interest in any of these and so curls up to sleep. Your dog’s movie or gaming session is a walk. BUT it must be a sniffy walk.
Ideally, your dog should be on as long a lead as is safe and practical. He should then have the freedom to go where he wants and sniff what he wants.
THIS IS AS IMPORTANT AS THE EXERCISE ITSELF.
Shorten the lead when you need to, but then let it out again. If you need to bring him back to you, don’t yank on the lead; call him in a nice, sharp tone he will respond to.
Your dog’s walk is almost always the highlight of his day but it’s worthless if he gets nothing from it because he’s on a short, tight lead. It’s the same as you watching your film with the sound off and no subtitles.
The image is clearly AI but if I start taking pictures of people in the park, I’ll soon be in trouble. Or bitten.

One of the things I hear from clients the first time we sit down with them to plan training is:

‘We’ve tried that before and it didn’t work’

We have no doubt that you did, and it didn’t, but here’s the thing…….

We live in a digital world with instant results. It doesn’t matter if it’s a loan application, a food delivery, or a match on a dating profile. It’s all pretty fast.

Dogs have nothing to do with the digital world, and they never will do. They are singularly analogue animals. They need everything to be simple, clear, and they need it repeated again and again and again. They need consistency, they need routine, and they need repetition and if repetition can be repeated, they need that too.

Dogs do not need the latest training app on their phone. You may need that, and we respect and support that, if it’s what you need, but did I mention that what your dog needs is repetition? I may have, but it bears repeating.

Don’t give up at the first hurdle. Your dog needs you to do better for them.

Steve at 99 Problems was absolutely amazing with not only our dog Arlo, but also us as dog owners. He listened to all our concerns and tailored a training program to suit our needs. He not only helped with training Arlo, but he also trained us in how to deal with him.
He was very reassuring and I know he’s only at the other end of a phone if we need him again anytime.
I would 100% recommend him.

We first met this girl (the black lab) about 18 months ago. She was pretty much agoraphobic. Only leaving the house to toilet in the garden and straight back inside. She had been like this for years.

Here she is cautiously enjoying a walk with her family. You can tell she is nervous, but she is out and living her life.

What was the trick? The magic bullet? No tricks. Months and months of planned, slow, gentle and patient work. Giving structure to her days to build a foundation on. Encouraging her, but always going at her pace. Giving her the opportunity to make choices.

Dog training may look great on YouTube or TikTok, but in reality, it is often repetitive, laborious, time-consuming, and plain dull. The best dog trainers understand and embrace this.

If you have a reactive or anxious dog, why not get in touch with us for a chat?
