They all did so well and are strong, healthy kittens 🫶 Our thanks to Jeremy and the Heathside vet team for taking the greatest care of our cats and kittens, we know we're in safe hands with you 😽

We are very smitten with this litter of ragdoll kittens who were born to wonderful parents Cottonfloss Baloo (Dad) and Hungry Lion *PL Fantaghiro (Mum) These babies are utterly gorgeous and have had the best start in life. They are 8 weeks old and have a lot to b offer to their future hooman slaves! 😂

Polite Notice and General Info 😺

To anyone who is concerned about our girl Freya being pregnant 6 months after her last litter....

Firstly, if you are concerned, we are pleased; it means you care about the welfare of animals, and a few years ago, we would have felt exactly the same without the knowledge we have now.

Our breeding cattery and cats are registered with TICA (The International Cat Association) TICA, and most other associations and registered bodies, state a healthy queen can have 3 litters every 2 years. This is set in conjunction with animal welfare agencies and organisations who have the cats health and wellbeing as their priority.

Every queen (and cat in general) is different. We have 2 breeding girls from the same breeder in Poland with similar bloodlines, and they are completely different.

Freya comes into heat every 4 weeks from February to September (the kitten season) Mating only happens when a girl is on heat. Some girls will cycle all year around but usually heats are triggered by hours of daylight so most females finish by October. Our girl Honey however hasn't been on heat / called since June. She is a maiden queen and is old enough to breed. She is showing all the right signs of being ready to be a Mummy but she isn't yet ready and willing to let our boy near her.

We plan as best as possible who is having a litter and when but this can only be a guide as it is the cats who primarily dictate this for us 😂 I.e. We would have liked to have bred Honey this season but she's not interested so we will wait to see what happens next year.

Back to Freya. She has been in full call 4 times since her last litter was born in April. We kept her separate from Baloo for the first 3 heats. Being on heat takes a lot of energy out of the girls and it can be very distressing. Most females, including Freya will lose their appetite and will go off their food completely for the week they are on heat. They lose weight and condition during this time and can become unhealthy quite quickly. As breeders who know their cats, the responsibility is with us to decide when it is best for them to have another litter.

There is also the worry of our queen's contracting pyometra when they are on heat and not being mated. This is an infection of the uterus which can be very serious and sometimes fatal. Every time a female is on heat, her cervix is open which allows bacteria inside. This is what causes the infection, and it cannot be prevented unless the cat is mated. This is why all female cats not selected as breeders need to be spayed.

Next year we may have 2 litters from 2 other queen's. We cannot have more than 2 litters at any one time because it is not fair on the rest of the cats (We have many) Having lots of fluffy clouds running around is lovely but it can also be stressful for our other cats so we need to be mindful of their health and happiness. As breeders, we would also struggle to properly socialise all kittens if we were to have 3 litters so it is the interests of everyone that we have a maximum of 2 litters at any one time. (Also bearing in mind they will stay with us for 16 weeks before going to their new families. However they are fully weaned and self sufficient from 8-10 weeks and do not depend on their Mum for anything. They are purely kept longer by us for socialisation amongst themselves tyke wider cat family and until they are spayed / neutered)

We will not look to breed Freya again until towards the end of kitten season next year, and therefore for many reasons including her health due to weight loss, risk of pyometra, having too many kittens at once, we have decided to mate her twice this season and once next season. (3 litters every 2 years) If we were to breed Freya once a year, we would need to put her on contraception which isn't necessary.

Freya is so much happier now she is pregnant. She is in better health and she is friendly and affectionate towards us and our other cats. Before she fell pregnant again, she was grumpy and aluf due to hormones and frustration of heats. Freya is young and fit. She is a great and proud Mum to her kittens and she truly loves raising them. She also gets lots of help from our other girls so it's a family effort.

So as you have read, there is a lot to know and consider when you are breeding responsibly. We are high welfare, ethical breeders and all of our cats and kittens live inside and without cages. We are regularly in contact with other reputable breeders and our mentors in the UK and overseas, and we attend seminars to keep ourselves educated. We would never make decisions that were not in the interests of our beloved cats.
