Exciting news! We have had three gorgeous pups born over the weekend. These are Patagonian Mara and live in our zoo area. The pups are already pretty adventurous and getting up to mischief so easy to spot!
These rodents are monogamous and males feel duty bound to defend their females at all costs. Mara will have 1-4 pups per litter and like guinea pigs they are born fully furred, eyes open and ready to go.

It’s World Meerkat Day!

One of our visitor favourites here are our mob of meerkats, and currently we have a tiny little member in our mob.

You can learn all about the meerkats during one of our daily keeper talks.

Have you seen our Pygmy Goat Kids yet? They had their first play outside yesterday and I think they enjoyed it. Still a few more to come too.

Rigby still enjoyed saying hello visitors despite the showers and wind 🦝

An update on our little Mu....

We would firstly like to thank everyone for their support, unfortunately after the surgery and recovery we noticed Mus leg not looking quite right once the pins came out. After exploring options with the specialist it was decided it was time to let Mu go. Unfortunately he developed a rotation higher up his leg so it was our only option to ensure he did not suffer.
Over the last few weeks he has been showered with love and support from our staff as well as the public, he has been on many adventures and has been a happy little soul.
We want to thank each and every individual who donated and shared, we just wish it could have been a different outcome.

We will miss him dearly.

Exciting morning. One of our Pygmy’s had a lovely little girl. Both doing are doing well.
We also had the shearer in for the sheep to have their annual hair cut. A bit late this year due to the weather.

Our butterfly house is also home to hungry little caterpillars. Have you seen any on your visits to us?

We would like to thank everyone that has donated so far. As time was against us we made the decision to go ahead with the operation as we have raised enough money for that part. The operation took place on Tuesday and was very successful. The surgeon is happy with the surgery and providing Mu stays calm his chances of running around with his friend Emmett again are very high.
We still need to raise the rest of the money for his aftercare though. He is due for pin removal and x-rays in five days. Fingers crossed this will also go well. Mu is happy in himself and still loves his cuddles despite having to stay in overnight at the vets. He is such brave little emu and so outgoing. He has been worth trying to save. Go Mu.

Today we went on a bit of a road trip to Peak Wildlife Park. There we met and brought home Sophia who had been kicked out of her group. Sophia is Tarkas new friend and it was love at first sight. Although Tarka has grown in confidence in the last few weeks, this little otter was the happiest we have ever seen him. ❤️

If you have missed the previous post please take the time to read. We are desperate to raise the money for Mu our baby emu. We have had a good response so far and we are grateful to all those that have donated, but still need more donations. For the best success rate Mu will need surgery in the next week. I know it is a big ask especially in this climate, we honestly believe Mu deserves a chance.

Have you met Mu our hand reared baby emu? Mu has sadly been under vet care for the last few weeks for treatment for a splayed leg. On further investigation we have found out that it is a deformity that can be fixed with a good success rate.
We always want the best for our animals here at Studley Grange and if a life is worth saving we will do what we can. If you would like to help please click on the link below.

Ever thought about becoming a zoo keeper? We have lots of experiences available. These are range between short sessions with a favourite animal to 1/2 a day experience with a range of animals.
Recently Laura enjoyed a zoo keeper experience, and this is what she said;

“I had the most fantastic zookeeper experience at Studley Grange Butterfly World & Farm!

From feeding breakfast to lots of different animals, to helping with spritzing the reptile enclosures, to taking part in the Otter talk, right though to even poop-scooping, it was a fabulous day!

Keeper Aidan was very enthusiastic, extremely knowledgeable about all of the animals in the collection, and explained things incredibly clearly. Nothing was rushed. I got to spend a nice amount of time with each species and to take lots of photos.

I got to meet and feed Skunks, a huge Tortoise, Eagle Owls, Meerkats, a very polite Raccoon, a friendly Bearded Dragon, a well-behaved Royal Python, and the fabulous Tarka, the otter, who I was also able to do something training with. I also got to have a sneaky snuggle with a baby Emu and, one of my favourite small creatures, a Tenrec!

The enjoyment I experienced throughout my time at Studley Grange continued when I went for a look around after my ‘zookeeping’ had ended.

A lovely large farm area with Donkeys, Wallabies, Alpacas, Dexter Cows, Emus, Pigs & Sheep; an undercover area full of squeaky Guinea Pigs, various breeds of Rabbit, sleek Belgian Hares, and Goats; more breeds of Chicken than I think I’ve seen in one place at one time anywhere; and some amazing Red Bourbon Turkeys!

Back in the zoo section were Mara, Ferrets, an aviary walkthrough with gorgeous Birds all around, a sleeping Genet, a pair of elusive Prevost’s Squirrels and, not forgetting, the amazing butterly house which includes even more animals.

My zookeeper experience, with plenty of hand-feeds included, was real value for money and I’d recommend it to anyone with a love of animals who would like the opportunity to be up close with them (and their poop!).”

Thanks again for a wonderful day! No doubt I’ll be back again soon!
