The FIVE YEAR rumour.

Tortoises when born in their natural environment, are obviously outside from day one. When they hatch, their Plastron especially is still very soft. It will harden up naturally and more quickly, when allowed outside. That is why garden tortoise species, such as Hermann’s and Horsfield’s and Mediterranean Spur Thighed, always thrive much better when allowed outside.

There is some misinterpretation of this best welfare practice on the Internet. Having offered many different species of tortoises, for the past forty two years, I still frequently hear people say, they have read on the Internet, that tortoises, should not be allowed outside until they are five or even seven years of age. People who practice this advice, will soon end up with a tortoise with some serious health issues. One of the problems they will face, is called ‘metabolic bone disease.’

In simple terms, garden species of tortoises, should always be allowed outside when suitable weather prevails. That means dry and mild weather. Even a cloudy day is fine, as the beneficial UV rays still pe*****te the clouds. Do not wait for a ‘hot sunny day.’ The tortoise will only ‘aestivate’ that means dig down and sleep, in order to remain cool.

It is true to say that, in the Northern hemisphere, here in the UK it is probably (due to inclement weather conditions) not to LEAVE your tortoise, outside, until they are bigger in size. So it is based upon the size of the tortoise and not its age. As the growth rate will be better and therefore quicker, if the tortoise has been allowed outside, more often than simply kept indoors, under a D3 bulb during the daytime.
