March is National Bed Month! My pets have way more beds than they need plus sofas and human beds to use. We have 3 orthopaedic beds and a step onto the sofa and human bed to make it safer. What beds do you have? #

**Do you think your dog is hypermobile? Research participants wanted**

We are looking for volunteers to participate in our research investigating hypermobility in dogs. We need 78 dogs so all welcome fitting the following criteria:

- Aged between 1 and 8 years

- Comfortable with physiotherapy assessment

- A healthy weight with no current painful conditions

- Suspected of being hypermobile/a little bit bendy

(Often hypermobile dogs will sleep in unusual positions, lie in a "frog" position with both legs out behind them, or have stretchy skin)

January is walk your dog month. Walking was hideous at the start of the month with all the mud and rain. I much prefer the dry crisp walks were are getting now.

Research using radiographs has shown OA in young and old cats and these cases have often not had any clinical signs picked up by the owner or vet. Physiotherapy is becoming a common modality in our senior dogs and is not yet well used in cats. 🐈‍⬛ This is Lexi, she is 17 and has general muscle loss, doesn’t venture outside much and doesn't do much more than lounging. She loves a treat and is a willing participant in exercises!

Back to some human training this week!! I am doing some massage clinics at a fab local clinic Wincanton Chiropractic . They have a host of treatments and therapies on offer. So, anyone that is always putting their time and money into making the animals feel good, maybe make some time for yourselves too!

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. This can be delivered in many ways. Rugs, pads, wraps, beds, and loops. I have a Westville machine with a small pad and a large dog bed.

There are so many ways to enrich a dogs life with play. Repetitive ball throwing, especially with the launchers can cause real damage to the body. Sadly, dogs often suffer with obsession which also causes stress.

As your dog retrieves the first...second...third...maybe fifth or sixth ball, his muscles start to tire and soon they reach overload, where they no longer can fully control and support your dog's movements. Now, when your dog does those amazing athletic maneuvers to snag the ball, soft tissues like the cranial cruciate ligament, iliopsoas muscle and tendon, and the muscles and ligaments that support the vertebrae are overstretching. Minor tears are occurring. Now the ball is thrown 10, 12 times or more and ultimately your dog lies down, exhausted.

That period between when your dog's muscles are in overload, and when your dog lies down exhausted, is the injury zone (Figure 1). But remember, with all that adrenaline, your dog doesn't feel the injuries happening, so you have no idea that the tissues are being used beyond their capacity.

When this game is repeated day after day, month after month, the small tissue tears become large ones, and suddenly it becomes evident that your dog is in pain and has an injury. Of course, it hasn't been sudden at all-what seemed sudden is just the final result of repeated stress and strain until the tissues gave way.
