I review from a few weeks back.. I had the pleasure of working with Aldo and his owners Nicki and Derek.
Aldo showed signs of wariness with strangers and occasionally children. Upon first meeting Aldo he was unsure of me so we took the process slow and over the course of our sessions and with repetition of training from his owners his confidence and obedience grew in trusting his owners guidance when unsure.
Great work from Nicki and Derek!

Today marks a huge milestone that has taken years of campaigning. As of today the use of an electric shock collar is banned!

Unfortunately some trainers in the UK use or did use theses on reactive, aggressive or high prey drive dogs and then pass them on for owners to continue the use.

From my personal perspective there should be no need to have to inflict any form of pain or harm to get a desired effect.

Training takes tedious repetition, dedication and consistency and that might mean anything between a couple of weeks to several months to even a year but it’s much more rewarding to work through developing and getting a better all rounded dog than to instil a fear effect.

Sunday Review.. Last year I did some work with Sarah and Betsy. Betsy suffered with anxiety around built up areas and people approaching her, the sessions allowed me to build both Sarah and Betsy’s confidence in handling and coping with these scenarios.

XL Bully owners please take note of the guidelines below.

Also staffy owners do ensure you have pedigree paperwork etc in place. Some vets have advised some Staffy owners to follow these guidelines with certificate of exemption due to characteristics features that may be considered as an XL Bully.

* 31 January 2024 — deadline to apply for a Certificate of Exemption online (12 noon).
* 1 February 2024 — it will become illegal to own an American Bully XL type dog if they are not registered on the Index of Exempted dogs. Owners must also have third party public liability insurance in place, and dogs must be microchipped and neutered (unless they’re too young, see other dates below).
* 31 March 2024 — deadline to have your dog microchipped and give the microchip number to Defra, if your dog was less than eight weeks old when you applied for a Certificate of Exemption.
* 30 June 2024 — deadline to have your dog neutered and give evidence to Defra, if your dog was more than one year old on 31 January 2024.
* 31 December 2024 — deadline to have your dog neutered and give evidence to Defra, if your dog was less than one year old on 31 January 2024.

Lest we forget!
Mine, my grandfathers and great grandfathers medals. The Bear would travel with each of us through our tours of duty starting 1942 from Africa, Italy, Cyprus & Afghanistan.
A small bear that was born from a Xmas cracker would be our guardian angel.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

Let’s address the dog in the room.. This is a long post but it needs to be discussed. A lot of media attention and potential legislation change has been put out there in regards to the XL Bully plus Bully breeds in general. This is my opinion as a dog trainer and I’d like your thoughts but please be respectful.
Bully breeds across the whole are strong and can be dangerous but so can any dog!
I’ve worked and trained dogs for 14 years and I deal with amazing customers who put there time in training there Bully Breeds. Do not easily dismiss them because of the media, I specialise in aggressive and reactive dogs and the most common is a Cockapoo but no one bats an eyelid because it’s got the “cute image”!
Don’t get me wrong XL Bullys are strong and potentially dangerous (in the wrong hands). As with any dog it requires the correct training, AS WITH ANY OWNER DO YOUR RESEARCH and with any animal you must give it respect to know there is always the potential for it to snap.
Certain owners get particular dog breeds as status symbols and this is instantly the beginning of the end. The banning of the breed is understandable but it’s not because of the dog it’s because of the person, the environment and the lack of training. Bully breeds are no different to any other dog because there is always a blank canvas to begin with.
I’ve heard on numerous occasions that many puppy group trainers will turn away or dismiss breeds like Staffys, Shepard’s or Dobermans because they are not the small cute, fluffy and easy to train dog, this shows two things. A lack in a trainer’s ability and instantly makes an owner want to give up.
Yes dogs are dangerous and maybe banning an XL Bully breed is needed because adults and children alike have been injured or worse but the owners are at fault for not having proper control, so don’t walk past a bully owner and instantly tarnish them with the media brush!

Please share your thoughts in a constructive way..

A lovely review left by Teresa.. Her dog Pip was unfortunately chased when he was a puppy leaving him anxious when passing dogs, meaning he would bark and react if they came close or even passed by.

With positive reinforcement through timely verbal engagement and reassurance we managed to rectify Pip’s anxiousness and even got him sitting outside a dog friendly coffee shop watching other dogs pass by.

Great work Pip!

Researching things such as behaviours, welfare and even ethics surrounding animals allows me to provide a better service and understanding.

This book will definitely be a nice read, considering my father has had it since it was released as he was a huge fan and owner of Rottweilers, its sadly spent a lot of time in the loft and I don’t think many of them exist now either!

Today I had the pleasure of returning to the College of West Anglia Cambridge for a career talk with Level 2 & Level 3 Animal Management students with the aim to inspire those looking to venture into the animal industry.

The biggest point I try and get across is hard work and motivation. Sharing how my career has lead me to running my own dog training business to also being a Zoo owner/director and what new venture I have starting.

A great question I was asked is “how do I deal with stress mentally and overcoming hard challenges”.
The key I personally find is learn from everything you do and if something does happen, ask yourself why and how can you prepare better next but don’t let things outside your control bring you down nor allow self doubt to take ahold.

I’m pretty useless at posting due to being too busy but I’ve had a few reviews posted lastly and will share them over the next few weeks.

This review is to do with Bear a two year old German Shepherd who disliked both People & Dogs.

Through reading his triggers, working on tone of voice and being consistent with session to allow continuity and development he can now walk him through town and through parks.

There’s still some tweaks that are needed but he and his owners are in a much better place.
Keep up the good work Bear!

Enrichment plays a huge importance in all aspects for everyone and everything and that definitely includes your dog.

Many owners over look this and assume simple walks and bundles of toys is more than enough. Enrichment helps reduce stress and help’s develop the senses and cognitive stimulation. Here’s a few examples that might help you out.

Interactive playtimes - Rota in a time to play with your dog, this builds a strong bond and builds up its response rate depending on the type of game you play such as fetch.

Different methods of feeding - Don’t always stick to a bowl, make it challenging. Every other day or two change the way your dog is fed. Puzzle feeders, snuffle mats, kongs even a cardboard box allow for cognitive engagement. The reason to not do this everyday is to allow for the enrichment of food to remain of value otherwise it purely becomes normal again.

Socialisation - If possible meet with other friendly dog owners, if your dog is reactive you can still train them to be within reasonable boundaries of other dogs and even seeing them from afar can allow them to process that there is no threat and reduce its overall reactivity.

Exposure to new environments and noises - Dogs love to sniff, there noses are full of receptors that absorb so much information when they take in new smells. Allow your dog to smell when on a walk.
Expose your dog to new places, especially to new noises. Many dogs suffer anxiety due to lack of exposure so taking them to a semi busy road or even a railway line or a town from time to time helps develop a positive response.

Something slightly different from a dog post 🤔

Here you see Kendra a beautiful 14ft Burmese Python 🐍
If you wasn’t aware, as well as dog training I own a small zoo with my good friend Ranger Stu called Cedars Nature Centre which is situated in Cedars Park in Waltham Cross Broxbourne.

We’re a family friendly affordable zoo with entry only £2 per person for the whole day.
We run animal talks and meet and greets every 45 minutes plus we have additional experiences which can be purchased such as Meet the Meerkats or a Junior Keeper Experience.

If you’re looking for a family day out then why not pop in and have a look at our animals and say hi.

Wondering why your dog might pull and be sniffing like crazy now that the snow has thawed?
It’s because of all the little scent pockets that have been suppressed from the snow are spreading with the slightly warmer temperature.
Snow and rain hold scent where warmer conditions allow it to spread, now the snow has thawed but it’s still wet your dog will ping to each little aspect of animal scent, ground disturbance and of course urine.
This is why its also important to take your dog out everyday for a walk, your garden doesn’t provide that scent enrichment compared to an area where people and other dogs/animals go and disturb the ground they walk upon.

This week I had the privilege to return to Capel Manor College to talk to Capel Manor College Dog Grooming Parlour students about my experiences, how I started growing my Business, working with customers and various scenarios I have dealt with when training dogs.

Educating and sharing my experiences to a younger generation is something I love to do.
Sharing insight about how working hard and keeping yourself motivated when running two businesses is all down to how much you want something to be successful.

I’ve failed many times in life but regrouped and learnt from each experience. Successful is built upon the lessons of failure.

Today is a day we least forget for those that have given the ultimate sacrifice. What we must not forget is that those that have survived war carry war with them for the remainder of their days.

Every war is different, every war is the same and every solider young and old fights there own battle.

The Army taught me a lot, and a big aspect was always keep pushing through the hardest of challenges. It’s that foundation that has always been what I’ve based my life around.
12 years ago today I was in Afghanistan and today I stand alongside my good friend and business partner Stuart Short in which it’s been 1 whole year since being a director of Cedars Nature Centre and running my own Dog Training business.

In that year we have grown from 3 staff members to 7, refurbished 2 enclosures with 3 planned. Provided a vet and isolation room and implemented a full business structure in which we work from.

It hasn’t been easy but we have tackled each challenge and will tackle each new one that will come our way as we continue to grow Cedars.

The mental fortitude to be in this position of director goes all the way back to that very foundation in which I thank the Army for giving me.

Been on radio silence for a while but thought I’d bring you this progress update about Poppy the 10 year old Jack Russell rescue.

Poppy had limited social skills when she arrived in her new home with Annette & Jon to the point that when seeing a dog even at distance she would react into a high pitch bark and would not tolerate any coming close to her.

Over five sessions we gradually built up Poppy’s trust and preempted her behaviour to respond with command words to help keep her calm and reassure her that she need not react.

Repetition and Consistency as always was the key and to maintain focus on Poppy. By session four Poppy was managing to walk around more built up areas and fields where other dogs would be. On session number five I used my demo dog Albury to walk along side Poppy and it couldn’t have gone any better.

Well done to Annette and Jon for persevering and giving Poppy a great forever home.

You can teach an old dog new tricks 😊

A little late in posting this review but it was an absolute pleasure working with Kirstin, Mark and Roxy.

Over the course of 3 sessions we worked on Roxy’s behavioural cues for when she became anxious and how to preempt and reassure her when out walking in various environments.

Roxy was very hesitant around both people and dogs and this was displayed by constantly barking whenever they were close by or passing.
Once her signals were known it was about preempting that behaviour and providing reassurance in a timely manner.

Repetition and consistency was key as with all aspects of training and over the 3 sessions Kirstin & Mark were set targets in helping Roxy overcome her anxiety.

By the end of the third session Roxy had settled when out on walks and would pass people and dogs in fairly close proximity without a reaction.

Keep up the great work Kirstin & Mark and continue enjoying your walks Roxy 🐕

Over the past couple of months I’ve had the pleasure of training and working with Jude a 5 month old Cavapoo and his owners Michael and Kayleigh.

Over the 5 sessions we have progressively worked on Jude’s house manners, his lead walking and recall as it was all new.
Each session is designed to be a building block upon the last, ensuring the both Michael and Kayleigh along with Jude are confident in there approach and build a trusting bond with Jude as he grows.

As you can see from the video Jude’s recall and trust aligns with his owners confidence in him and the fact it took just two of those lessons to get him recalling off lead is a great testament to Michael and Kayleigh.

Something that might make you cool down..
A few weeks back on a session with the lovely Mable myself and her owner Jo introduced her to water.
It looks pretty straightforward here but to start with it took a lot of encouragement and wet feet to get her into the water especially as her toy slowly floated away.
Once she was in there was no going back.

We’ve carried out 5 sessions over a 5 month period since Mable was a pup and she has developed amazingly. We have worked on how to approach passing people, crossing high bridges, walking off lead and getting use to sights and sounds of busy areas.
It’s been an absolute pleasure watching her grow from a pup into this lovely dog.

An early morning session in Barnet today to avoid the extreme heat 🥵

Todays session with Wolfe was focusing on general behaviour meeting dogs and minor recall but fortunately we came across a small bridge, something which he has never tackled.

At first you’ll see he’s very unsure and nervous but the key here is “seeing is doing”.
Something so simple is a big trust builder and by walking next to or slightly in front plus providing reassurance in talking to your dog will allow them the confidence to tackle any obstacle.

Treats are not even needed as it’s about engagement, focus, patience and perseverance.
Wolfe quickly got use to the bridge and with a few more introductions during future walks will have no issue taking the lead when crossing.

Please remember to avoid walking your dogs during the hottest parts of the day. Think of the surface temperature on there paws along with the heat on there fur.
