Fighting the fight for animals promoting animal welfare in Afghanistan and Ukraine
(382)

The Nowzad Charity was founded in 2007 by Pen Farthing, a Former Royal Marine Commando. Kilo Company of 42 Commando Royal Marines arrived in the war torn town of Now Zad in Helmand Province of Afghanistan in November 2006. Their mission, to provide stability for the local people during a period of ever decreasing security. The Royal Marines soon realised that it wasn’t only the local people that n

eeded their help. Many of the stray dogs that roamed the town of ‘Now Zad’ now had a guardian for the first time in their lives; in the form of Sergeant Pen Farthing. Upon breaking up an organised dog fight, one of the dogs ‘adopted’ Pen as his only buddy. Naming the dog ‘Nowzad’ Pen could not leave his new four-legged friend behind, so he hatched a cunning plan to bring Nowzad the dog from deep in Helmand Province to a new life in the English countryside. Miraculously, his plan was successful, but Pen was soon inundated with requests from soldiers in the same position as he'd found himself in...

Thus the Nowzad Charity was born… registered as a charity in England and Wales, but also a 501c3 in the USA and a Non-Governmental Organisation in Afghanistan and Ukraine. Operating within Afghanistan has not been plain sailing… we have faced multiple challenges during the years of conflict, not least the coalition withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. The team who remained in Kabul after Nowzad’s now famous ‘Operation Ark’ campaign, have not only rebuilt from scratch but are now expanding their work within many communities, including helping to improve the welfare of working animals and the families who rely on them. We are also very proud to run Afghanistan’s only equine sanctuary too – home to 15 donkeys and 2 horses, all rescued from a life of extreme hardship as working animals. As the years have advanced so have our goals to ensuring our animal welfare work not only benefits the animals, we care for but the people too. Our rabies prevention work is testimony to that. In 2023 the Nowzad charity opened the Nowzad Veterinary Hospital in Kabul – the first and only of its kind in the whole of Afghanistan – which now treats vaccinates and neuters many hundreds of animals in need. Nowzad’s experience of working in a conflict zone has also been useful in our efforts to help the animals sadly caught up in the war in Ukraine. There are many thousands upon thousands of animals living on the streets now – simply abandoned as the local people fled the fighting, and shelters became full to absolute capacity. At the beginning of the Russian invasion, Nowzad’s priority quickly became establishing as an NGO in Lviv, which helped facilitate vital supply lines into Ukraine for humanitarian and veterinary purposes. We now use this as our base for the multiple animal welfare programmes Nowzad supports across the country. These include re-building animal shelters close to the frontlines of fighting damaged through missile and rocket strikes, and organising large scale spay-neuter-vaccinate initiatives in several key areas - to humanely reduce the burgeoning street animal populations, plus control the spread of dangerous diseases. By supporting Nowzad’s vital animal welfare work you are making a positive and much needed impact for an animal in need in either Afghanistan or Ukraine. Thank you for caring and thank you for donating.

In conjunction with Claret Press, Nowzad founder Pen Farthing is taking part in a live ‘ask the author’ event on November 5th!

Pen Farthing is one of the most controversial figure of the 2021 Afghanistan Evacuation, whose story captured global headlines.

Pen Farthing was content rescuing the strays of Kabul, working alongside his charity staff of Afghan vets which included the first female vets in the country.

That was, until the Afghanistan withdrawal, where the Taliban overran the country in a matter of weeks. The British government was “Missing in Action” with Pen caught in the crossfire. He had to steer his charity staff and animals through the dangers of a Taliban takeover and a political storm back home.

Ricky Gervais calls him "heroic".

The Daily Beast calls it "a damning indictment of foreign policy failures".

The Private Eye says, "He's still angry. It's understandable."

Pen Farthing is an ex-Royal Marine Commando, founder of animal welfare charity Nowzad and author of Operation Ark.

While on an Operation tour in Afghanistan as part of 42 Commando, Royal Marines in 2006, Pen Farthing broke up an organised dogfight. The experience inspired him to start the animal welfare charity Nowzad.

For nearly two decades, Nowzad worked closely alongside coalition forces and the local community to provide lifesaving animal welfare, rabies prevention and education whilst promoting employment for female vets.

Pen was CNN’s Hero of the Year 2014 and was awarded the 2024 UK’s RSPCA Branch Award for Outstanding Contribution to Animal Welfare.

Pen, and Nowzad continue to work in Afghanistan and now Ukraine. And he is happy to answer whatever question you throw at him..!

🐾 Unique Nowzad Dog Poppy🐾

In the heart of a fierce battle, a brave pigeon carried a vital message to warn his comrades of an impending ambush. A loyal dog led the wounded to safety under the cover of night.

Their sacrifices, alongside those of countless other animals, were instrumental in securing victory. Let us honour their memory and support the ongoing work to aid animals and soldiers who continue to bear the scars of war. The Nowzad Dog Poppy is a special way to remember the animals of war, who, just like our soldiers, faced unimaginable challenges and demonstrated unwavering loyalty.

By wearing this poppy, you not only pay tribute to the fallen but also contribute to a brighter, more compassionate future. Let’s stand together in remembrance and gratitude. Wear your Nowzad Dog Poppy with pride and let’s make sure their sacrifices are never forgotten.

Please like and share this post to help spread the word about this important cause.

The Nowzad Kabul Team have planned a full day of education and awareness ahead of tomorrow!

Nowzad Veterinary Teams will be hosting a large education and outreach event at Kabul University for World Rabies Day 2024, to include students and teachers from the vet faculty and other departments, plus government officials and municipality staff.

Info leaflets on rabies prevention will be distributed to all audiences, and teams will also put up posters on rabies at different squares around Kabul. Vets will be offering free rabies vaccinations on the 28th September to all owned dogs and cats brought to Nowzad’s hospital or through appointments at homes across the city.

This is the positive outcome a donation to Nowzad makes. Please consider donating today to be the difference - thank you 🐾

**Pupdate from Adoptions**

Something to bring some warmth & happiness to everyone as Autumn arrives.

Our beautiful serene Annie from Ukraine is just loving life with her new family. This gentle girl has really struck gold and is quickly learning some tricks from her Afghan sister.

Both girls are having fun with their fabulous playing and bed swaps! Trips to the beach, strolls along the shore and woodland walks are a world away from her life before and she is truly embracing it all.

Her new Mum says….She is a happy soul and at the end of a really busy day she will head straight to bed where she seems so cosy and comfortable. When in her bed at nighttime and despite all encouragement that her sister has gone outside, she barely lifts her head and is quiet all night. We love her - she is such a good girl❤️

We thank her new family for giving these two girls an amazing and loving home - they really both have struck gold. It is a total joy to see these two special dogs having such amazing adventures. Both Nowzad rescues, one from Afghanistan & one from Ukraine they are the luckiest dogs! Happy days ahead for you all ❤️🐶🐾

Operation Ark is the powerful true story of the most controversial figure of the 2021 Afghanistan Evacuation.
Pen Farthing was branded a villain who put “pets over people”, blamed for deserting Afghans, and accused of risking British soldiers.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The government was “Missing in Action” with Pen caught in the crossfire. He had to steer his charity staff and animals through the dangers of a Taliban takeover and a political storm back home. This book is his account of the chaotic 14 days of the evacuation and its aftermath: offering a unique, important insight into the failures of the government, and setting the record straight. Adorable Isla is really enjoying life with her new family.

Isla is growing in confidence slowly and has been an angel since day one. She has gone on a first caravan trip and as you can see from the photograph clearly had no trouble sleeping. She loves her runs off lead in safe environments with other dogs, and has shown how intelligent she is when learning new skills.

Her new family say ‘We are so lucky to have Isla in our family; she is outstanding!!!’

We think you’ll agree Isla has struck gold with her new family. Happy days ahead for you now beautiful girl we know there’ll be plenty of future adventures & fun for you.

Thank you to her new family for giving her a wonderful life ❤️🐾🐶
