Growing up as a pony obsessed girl in a non-horsey family I’ve always had to swim against the current when it came to pursuing my passion for horses and riding. While I was extremely fortunate as a child to be sent for riding lessons at the local school and to eventually be allowed keep my pony on the family farm real training and development opportunities for me were often few and very far betwee

n due to transport and geographical issues. On moving to the UK as an adult I suddenly had far more access to trainers of different disciplines, however after becoming a mother to my little girl, time became the new constraint. Suddenly I just wasn’t able to justify a 3 hour round trip for a 45 minute lesson. This is where the idea of Wise Owl Equitation came about, a small internet based business that passionately believes that everyone should have access to top quality training regardless of their location, budget or time constraints. Even though there is a wealth of riding talent (and pony obsessed children) globally, only a select few are able to access the training required to truly excel. I firmly believe that all riders should have access to quality training, in spite of the confines of location, trainer availability, budget and time. My vision is to create the “Uber or Airbnb” of equestrian training. The platform connects riders from anywhere in the world to trainers and equine experts in an affordable and time saving manner. It allows riders to access the training and direction required to help them to reach their full potential. We have top class trainers from all disciplines so whether riders are dealing with specific problems such as loading or clipping that a natural horsemanship trainer can help with, want to learn a new skill such as side-saddle or want to start a regular program of training in their chosen discipline we have the solution for them. At all costs we want to avoid seeing highly talented riders failing to progress due to the lack of suitable trainers in their local area.

I love you so, so much.

This is my favorite photo of my beautiful wife. It’s from our wedding day in 2021 and it was the best day ever. People will talk about G's smile, and it was incredible—it would make you feel like you were the center of the universe. But what I love about this photo is how it captures her strength. She was a strong, beautiful, phenomenal woman who just loved everything and everyone.

Working in the equestrian world is not an easy life; there are a lot of knocks and dark days. But G would navigate this by throwing so much joy and love at every situation. She would get as much joy from having a Greggs tea on the way home from the gallops as she would teaching a client in the pouring rain or jumping and galloping around biggest courses in the world. It was just incredible to be at your side and feel this energy.

I’m so proud to be your husband.

Rest in peace, my beautiful girl.

I don’t want this to sound like a thank you speech, but there are some people that I’d like to acknowledge and thank. The team at Bicton, who were beyond words in their care for Debbie, Diana, and me in the immediate aftermath; Tim, Jonelle, and their beautiful kids for getting me through the first 24 hours; and the Wolf Pack for being there ever since. There have been so many incredible messages of support, and I’m sorry for not getting back to more of you, but please know that they have been read and are so appreciated.

Seeing the purple and white ribbons has been amazing. But on an even more basic level, when you’re out competing this weekend, please just smile at each other, don’t feel awkward about laughing, and above all, try and love everything and everyone.

Spring is finally here! The last few months were every horse owners nightmare. Rain, mud, water logged fields. I finally got my horses out a few weeks ago. However, the fields are still much soggier than i would like!

These are great RIDING RULES FOR Middle Aged HORSEWOMEN

1) We DO NOT need to show up with our hair combed and wearing makeup and a clean shirt.

2) Moaning, groaning and complaining about aching muscles is perfectly acceptable, as is taking Motrin (or something stronger) prior to a ride.

3) Helping someone on or off the horse does not mean the rider is an invalid. It only means the horse got taller overnight.

4) No one will comment about how big someone's butt looks in a saddle.

5) Everyone will wait patiently while someone dismounts and adjusts equipment. They will also wait patiently until that person re-mounts and is ready to move on--no matter how long that takes.

6) When a horse is acting up, we will just accept that it is having a bad hair day - it is not the rider's fault.

7) Mentioning that it is too hot, too dry, too humid, too cold, too wet, too buggy, etc., is considered self-expression, not whining.

8)Wanting to be first, last, walk, or just stop does not mean the rider is a wimp. Sometimes it is necessary to teach a horse who is in charge.

9) We will take time to discuss the important issues of the day, like who is dating who, who is cheating on who and any other relevant information that needs to be passed on.

10) We will acknowledge that horses are very strange animals and that sometimes, for no reason at all, we fall off of them. If this happens to any rider, the other riders will ascertain that the person is okay and then not mention the incident to another living soul, especially husbands and significant others.

11) Our horses are not fat, they are "big-boned."

12) We need to keep this riding thing mysterious and strange-sounding. If everyone finds out how much fun it is, the price of horses will go up and we will not be able to afford a dozen of them.

13) If we want, we can show up in English helmets and boots and ride in a western saddle if we feel like it, so we can take more stuff with us and no one is allowed to make comments.

Such an interesting, and well written article about a hugely important topic. Well done Blackhill Eventing for highlighting the importance of inclusivity in our sport and bravo to those organisations already working to make positive changes for all equestrians.

In today’s The Irish Field, I talk about neurodiversity in equestrian sport. I hope people will find it interesting and informative, and that it will provide a little insight into what life is like as a neurodivergent person riding and competing with horses.

You may have noticed we've been very quiet on socials lately. Horses are filled with many ups and downs, and unfortunately, on June 1st, this year, my beloved mare and true horse of a lifetime, very unexpectedly and tragically passed away.

The past few months have been extremely difficult, and in honesty, I came very close to closing Wise Owl Equitation completely. My heart just wasn't in it.

Having taken time restock and with the support of some fantastic friends and customers, I've taken the decision to start again. We have some very exciting masterclasses coming up in Saddle Club, so look out for details to follow.

In the meantime, give your horse/pony/best friend an extra cuddle tonight and treasure every moment because nobody knows what the future holds. 💔

New Trainer Alert:

Kim Robare has a passion to help riders enhance communication with their horses. Using principles from the old masters she applies techniques and exercises to create a more effective conversation that improves balance and releases tension. Kim maintains a holistic approach to each horse and rider based on confirmation, breed, gender, and life experiences.

Kim’s own journey into classical training, at times, left her frustrated. The horses clearly responded to the instruction Kim was receiving, but it was often difficult to decipher what to do and when to do it. This led to Kim’s pursuit of “why”. Fortunately, Kim was able to find a patient mentor who helped her uncover the answers to many questions.

As a result of her extensive experience and education, Kim is able to offer uncomplicated direction that unlocks the treasures of classical training.

Friday's Featured Trainer - Richard Seals

Richard is a British Show Jumping UK Level 3 Coach, British Show Jumping Para coach, Pony Club Accredited coach.

He is an experienced International Show Jumper and young horse producer, working with home bred and novice horses up to international grand prix horses. He is also currently sat on the British Show Jumping National Sport Committee and a representative for the East Midlands on the British Show jumping Members Council.

As a rider he has trained with International riders Di Lampard, Geoff Glazzard and Steve Hadley and also has worked for the Hong Kong National Team and for International show jumping legend Ludger Beerbaum in Germany

Announcing our next masterclass! Tuesday 25th April 6 30pm

To celebrate the start of show season we have lined up a fabulous masterclass to help you get out and about and fully prepare for the season ahead.

Shane McKenna is a successful show rider, producer and judge. He competes successfully from county level to The RDS and Balmoral.

In this masterclass, Shane will cover:

🦉Tips on choosing shows and classes to suit your horse
🦉How to interpret what will be expected from the judges in each class
🦉Managing multiple classes and key dos and don'ts on the day
🦉Dresscode and Turn Out
🦉Show Prep - nutrition, training, riding excersizes, plaiting, tack
🦉Schooling excersizes that can be done at home in preparation for a show

Shane is going to record and talk us through his show prep schooling routine. Participants will then be invited to work through the routine and submit videos of their efforts for feedback and commentary.
