The gentlest of a bath, dry & brush out for Rupert. Rupert seems to have become very frail recently. Grooms on elderly dogs can be very hard on them. The best way to manage this is to find simple styles & ways of working to speed the process up & avoid as much manipulation of painful joints as possible, whilst ensuring dogs are clean & knot free. Wilfred ❤️ He’s come such a long way from the terrified boy he was. A rescue removed from abuse, to a family to help him heal. Alongside working quickly to get him in & out of the Salon asap, I need to make slow steady movements so he can predict what I’m doing & put scissors etc down carefully as sudden noises spook him. But, he’s come so far & continues to gain confidence. Having worked first hand with ‘untouchable’ dogs for years, these dogs really are special. Not the easiest dogs to groom by any stretch, and they quite often never enjoy a groom. But it’s about grooms being part of routine & keeping it all as low stress as possible. About building a trusting relationship with another human. An owners commitment to this process is a huge part of helping dogs manage major fears.
