Meet Scamp! This lovely boy had a huge lipoma removed by us in the van – see pictures!

This benign lump was just getting larger and larger until it was starting to restrict his mobility. At this stage, we decided to step in and remove it surgically.

As one of the most common lumps in dogs, we’ve created an informative post for owners to know a bit more about lipomas or ‘fatty lumps’ but also to warn about soft tissue sarcomas, as they are very similar.

🔍 What is a Lipoma?
• A lipoma is a non-cancerous lump made of fat cells that typically develops under the skin.

• They're usually soft, movable, and painless, often feeling like doughy lumps.

• Soft Tissue Sarcoma: Soft tissue sarcomas are malignant tumors that develop in connective tissues such as muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. They can vary in appearance and texture but are often firm and may be attached to deeper tissues.

⚠️ Common areas where they’re found:

Lipomas:
• Typically found in subcutaneous tissue, often in areas with a higher fat concentration like the chest, abdomen, and neck.

Soft Tissue Sarcomas:
• Can develop in various locations, including extremities, trunk, head and neck, axillary region, and intra-abdominal area.

💼 Treatment:
• In most cases, lipomas don't require treatment unless they're causing issues.

• Surgical removal may be considered if they're large or affecting your dog's quality of life or mobility.

Remember, if you notice any new lumps or changes in existing ones, it's essential to have them checked by a veterinarian.

Regular check-ups can help ensure your furry friend stays happy and healthy! And we are glad to report Scamp is doing very well after his lipoma removal and back to his cheeky self 🐶💕

Here is a few hints and tips:

1) Stay Hydrated: Bring water for both you and your dog.

2) Time it Right: Walk in the cooler parts of the day, like early morning or late evening.

3) Check the Pavement: Test the pavement with your hand; if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

4) Provide Shade: Seek out shady routes to avoid overheating.

5) Watch for Signs: Look out for signs of heatstroke in your dog, like excessive panting or lethargy.

6) Shorter Walks: Consider shorter, more frequent walks to prevent exhaustion.

7) Avoid Exercise: On extremely hot days, opt for indoor playtime instead of walks.

This is the beautiful Juniper 😻, our vet and nurse visited her home to have a health check and to give Juniper her microchip, as you can see Juniper took everything in her stride and is now chipped before the law takes place.

This is the beautiful Breeze, when we attend an appointment with you and your pet a full health check is carried out, this involves an assessment of their overall well-being which includes:

🐱 Understanding Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions (FORL) 🦷

Meet Pepsi, one of our feline patients who recently underwent treatment for Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions (FORL). This condition is a common dental problem in cats that causes painful lesions and tooth loss.

FORL occurs when cells in a cat's body mistakenly attack and destroy the tooth's structure, leading to painful erosions and ultimately tooth loss. These lesions can be challenging to detect without dental x-rays, as they often develop beneath the gum line.

On the pictures, it is easy to appreciate a fleshy lesion on Pepsi's canine tooth. If you look at the x-ray, a large defect is revealed on this tooth. This is what we usually can see from the outside, and what we can then identify on the x-rays. It can happen on any tooth, so keep an eye on those fleshy bits on your cat's tooth if you see them!

Regular dental check-ups and x-rays are essential for early detection and treatment of FORL. Treatment typically involves extraction of affected teeth to alleviate pain and prevent further complications.

We recently visited the gorgeous Lewy to castrate him. The procedure was performed in our fully equipped Veterinary van just outside his home, which meant that he was able to recover with his family and home comforts around him 🐶❤️

Our aim is for our visits to be as stress free as possible for our pets and their owners.

We're happy to say Lewy is recovering well from his surgery 😍

Look at the concentration for the cream cheese 🧀 😋

We went out to see Olaf yesterday to give him a full health check and booster vaccination 🩺💉. Olaf is quite a nervous boy when it comes to vet visits, but his owners have worked so hard to socialise him and expose him to situations that have improved his confidence massively 👏.
So, along with their reassurance (and a hefty dose of bribery with cream cheese 🧀 😀), look at how amazing he did being weighed on our scales 💪

We love that we are able to help in these circumstances by being able to take our time with our visits, make friends with the furbabies that we see and remove as much stress as possible that might be associated with the 'typical' veterinary experience ❤️

🥰 Gorgeous Isabella 🥰

Mariana and Gabby went to visit Isabella and her family today, and she was so relaxed that she decided to curl up and have a little snooze on our scales 😴❤️ we just couldn't not share these photos!

We love being able to provide our service in the comfort of your own home so that your precious furbabies are as stress-free as possible 💖 some of our pets prefer to be in the van when they are checked over, while some (like Isabella) prefer their home comforts. That's why we tailor every one of our visits to the pets we are seeing and what would be less stressful for them, because we know there is not one size fits all 😊
