Elbow Dysplasia - What is it and how can physio help? 🐶
Elbow dysplasia is a very common problem - in fact it is one of the most common causes of lameness, especially in large breed dogs. Elbow dysplasia occurs when the bones that make up the elbow joint don’t quite fit together properly. This can cause abnormal pressures and stresses within the joint, which can lead to degeneration and damage. This often causes limping and abnormal movement, sometimes after prolonged rest or exercise, although symptoms can vary.
If your dog shows signs of lameness it is important to get this investigated by your vet. Using a variety of investigation techniques your vet can then diagnose the issue and decide with you on the best treatment plan. There are lots of potential treatment/management options available for elbow dysplasia depending on the specific case. These can include surgeries, injected joint therapies, medication, stem cell treatment, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to name a few.
Physio can have a number of benefits for elbow dysplasia cases. In a physio session for elbow dysplasia the main aims (depending on the treatments from the vet) include building muscle to support the joint, helping to manage compensatory muscular issues and encouraging the dog to use the limb and joint more effectively, to maintain or improve function. If your dog has had surgery, post surgical rehabilitation to attain the best function possible will also be an important goal.
Physiotherapy sessions with Forward Steps Veterinary Physiotherapy for elbow dysplasia (both conservative and surgical cases) include home adaptation and management advice, as well as exercise advice. Massage therapy is often beneficial and depending on the case electrotherapies or heat/ ice therapy may also be useful to achieve the rehabilitation goals. All sessions include an individually tailored home exercise plan to improve active limb use and strengthening between sessions.
