Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen 😄 we hope you've all had a fantastic day.

We'd like to ask for your help. As some of you are aware, we recently took in a stray ferret who appears to be in season 😔

We'd like to ask if anybody would like to contribute towards the costs for this little lady and her implant appointment coming up, this is to stop her from going into season again. Please follow the link below to our PayPal, Every donation made goes a long way and helps us on our mission to provide the best care for each animal that comes into our rescue😍
Thank you 😊

Rat Care: My experience and advice to those considering getting rats 🐀

This post is a mixture of my experience with my boys and also some informative knowledge for those who are considering getting these amazing animals

The white cage was the one that came with just Basil and was suitable for 1-2 rats. But when I took on my other 2 I got them a rat mansion. Basil was alone for the first 1-2 weeks due to having constant sneezing. I took him to the vets right away and other than the sneezing there was no symptoms. He was put on Baytril as a precaution.

We went back after the medication was used and Vet was confident there is no respiratory infection due to the heart sounds and lungs remaining at their normal sound and being healthy. Vet thinks it’s likely allergies or he’s just more sensitive than other rats.
I recently bought Basil an Air purifier to help

I also changed their bedding to “Back 2 nature” as it causes less dust. Still adding new things for them to explore every week. The wheel is over 15 inches in diameter (minimum is 13 inches for rats)

Giving rats plenty of things to explore is key to having a happy rat. It’s also recommended to have them out of the cage for at least an hour daily for enrichment.

Items such as fabric bedding should be washed at least once a week with non bio/non scented detergent, this is due to risk of URIs and other respiratory issues developing (which are common with rats)

Rats should be fed around 15-20 grams of rat feed daily per rat (split into two meals). They can also be given a variety of fruit and veg (no citrus) as a occasional treat. Though always check that a rat can have a certain food before giving it to them. You can also get treat balls which you can put food in and they will play with the ball to get the food, this is another great option for enrichment.

When you are introducing rats to another rat do not just put them in the same cage straight away as this can lead to fights, stress and injuries for the rats.

It’s recommended to limit the first introduction to 10-15 mins on neutral ground (pop up play pen as an example. When they are in separate cages it is also recommended to have the cages facing each other (not close enough that they can reach through each others bars though). It can also be effective to swap an item from each cage to get the others used to their scent.

When first introducing (especially with males) you will witness mounting, pushing, pinning, grooming each other etc. these can all be dominance behaviours (though same can also be playfulness). It’s best to let them get on with it while keeping a close eye on them and only interfering if a rat is genuinely distressed, actual fighting is about to break out etc. Remember to keep the first introductions short and sweet.

Once they are comfortable with each other you can then move them in together but remember to keep a close eye on them and be prepared for things to go wrong. If a fight breaks out water spray or throwing a tea towel over one and picking them up can be effective. (Tea towel will greatly decrease change of you getting hurt).

I’ve only ever been bitten by one once and that’s when Basil lite really wanted the plastic bag I had and went to grab it and caught my finger underneath. It was abit sore but I didn’t blame him as he didn’t know my finger was there. And even when I do get bit by any animal I never blame the animal as they always bite for a reason.

I would rate rat bites hurting more than a corn snake bite 😅

I hope you have found this post interesting and informative and I would love to hear any questions or feedback ❤️ some people don’t like that I share stories of my animals which are not extremely common pets but even if the minority of people like them then that makes me happy.

Extra note: in no way am I a rodent professional am just writing my own experience and knowledge. If you are concerned about your rat it’s always best to go to a vets. If you are in Canterbury I recommend Vets4Pets Canterbury Sturry Road as Craig is great. Or if you are on Low income I recommend Lord whiskeys ❤️

Great sources which can explain better than I do:

Providing a wheel in rats' cage allows them to perform natural running behaviour whenever they want to in their own time.

Hey everyone

Unfortunately I have had to stop doing dog walks due to health issues. I’m hoping in the future I will be able to be back at it.

I’m going to still offer pop in visits.

I’m sorry for the inconvenience this has caused to my clients.

I hope you all have a good Christmas tomorrow!

Been a great first year operating my business despite having the multiple health issues I have had occur. Sadly due to these issues I can’t do as many hours as I wanted to but I’m going to continue aiming to become a certified dog trainer while doing the walks I am still able to do ❤️

Hi everyone

Looks like I have to take a break till at least this weekend or till Monday.
Doctors said I have muscle damage which I need to give a little while to heal otherwise I could risk further damage.

Very frustrated at the moment. But I have some good news regarding doctors as well, I am getting injections on the 20th to try and decrease pain in my legs.

Hopefully this rough patch with being unlucky with health will pass ❤️

Thankyou all for your continued support of my business.

Just found out one of my past clients passed away. Poppy was among some of my first clients I took on. She was already elderly when I met her and did start to not be able to have as long walks but we would just chill in a field letting her take it easy.
She was an absolute pleasure to be around.
Rest in peace Poppy ❤️

So yesterday at night I had these little guys handed to me.

They are less than a week old and I’ve been doing feeds every two hours.

Was definitely a challenge throughout the night as I was not feeling very well anyway but absolutely worth it to give these guys the best chance of survival
