Today, Max and I got to be the students! And what a great experience it was! Max’s gundog training has been coming along nicely and our next step was ensuring he could still focus and learn around other dogs too. Thank you so much Claire and John, and Carol Marlow too! Looking forward to our next session in a couple of weeks 😁

“CRATES ARE AWFUL!!”

Unfortunately this could not be further from the truth. Crates, in my opinion, are the greatest addition to your training and benefits both you AND your dog in soooo many ways.

When babies go to sleep you pop them in a cot with bars and high sides to ensure they stay safe. And yet, for some reason, the same process for a dog seems to make people feel a whole host of emotions that sees crates as some awful ‘prison’ for your dog.

Now as you can quite clearly see, crate training done properly means that your dog can see their crate as their space. To feel comfortable, sleep and do as they please. Not an excruciatingly painful experience that some people lead you to believe.

The benefits of crate training are endless. And just like a baby in a cot, it keeps your dog safe! However, unlike babies, an 8 week old puppy can get up to so much if left to their own devices. Not only could they damage your home and cause destruction, but this can also lead to them causing harm to themselves. Imagine if they chewed through your electricity cables, or ate a lump of wood from your lovely chairs you just brought. Accidents DO happen! And the best way to prevent them is to keep your dog safe when you’re unable to give them your full attention.

Some other benefits of crate training include:
💥aids in toilet training as dogs will not go in their bed
💥prepares them for potential vet stays as they will be used there too!
💥allows you to still live your life, whilst training your dog to be a part of it
💥assists in teaching your dog to be comfortable on their own (preventing separation issues later down the line)
💥stops your dog practicing any unwanted behaviours whilst you’re not watching
💥 encourages your dog to sleep and settle! Young puppies need around 18-20 hours sleep! Ensuring they meet this means when they are awake, they will be more likely to listen, less likely to cause havoc, less likely to turn into the devil and bite you like a piranha!!
💥prepares for any surgeries later on in life. Max has had a fair few, with 2 including 2 full weeks in the crate with only toilet breaks and extremely short walks!

If I haven’t managed to convince you, or you’d like any more information please feel free to ask. You can crate train a dog or any age, if you’re unsure how, then we can help ☺️

Some call it scatter feeding, some will call it enrichment. But in actual fact, all it is is encouraging bad habits.

Many owners will complain how they dogs eats items dropped from the kitchen counters, scavenge when out on a walk, or even raid other people’s picnics! But when we get down to the nitty gritty of it, it’s because they regularly allow their dog to eat off the floor.

There are so many things out there that can be extremely harmful to your dogs. Even reports of people intentionally leaving dangerous substances around in hope of causing harm to your dog.

By allowing, or even encouraging your dog to eat off of the floor you are not only setting yourself up for a large vet bill but could be putting your dog in a lot of danger.

Food should only ever come from you, or be eaten out of their bowl.

A fallen food item in the home is a perfect opportunity to help teach them, not to allow them to pick up whatever they want. And if they are not expected to follow these rules in the home, then there’s no chance they will follow the same rules outside!

If you’re looking for enrichment, the world itself is one great big sniffing playground for your dog. They do not need treats within that in order for it to be stimulating. You could always switch it to hiding a ball or toy instead, and then reward them with a treat once they do ☺️

If your dog does struggle with leaving food, dogs or any other items.. that’s something we can help with 💪🏻

One of the best things about dogs and training…

You can never stop learning! The possibilities are endless and the fact that it doesn’t matter how much you read, watch or listen… there is always more to learn! And what is even more exciting is that your dog gets to learn too! Their abilities to pick up new knowledge, habits and exercises is incredible. At nearly 5 years old Max is learning a whole new hobby and he’s absolutely loving it, we both are!!

Try and learn something new for yourself and for your dog, they will definitely thank you for it ☺️

have knocked it out of the park with their gundog instructor course! So much knowledge and education. Highly recommend!!!

A bit of a different day for us last week. We spent the day Greenhill Farm on a training shoot day run by Family Dog Services. Being a complete newbie to the gundog world it was amazing to learn how the different roles perform in a real life scenario. I had a morning of spaniels, followed by an afternoon watching the retrievers do their thing. Was lovely meeting all the owners and their dogs. As well as a few familiar faces too 😁 Carol Marlow Petra and Amy.
Thank you all for having me and making me feel so very welcome. Now we are straight back to it with our training for the instructor course with a much better picture on how it all comes together at the end ✌️

The hardest part about doing something difficult is getting started!

If I know I’ve got to clean & tidy the house I will PROCRASTINATE to my hearts content! But once I start, it actually wasn’t as bad as I made it out to be - and once it’s done, I even feel good for it!

The same goes for training your dog, if it’s causing you stress, making your life difficult or even just getting you down - the hardest part is getting started, but once you do … THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS!!

Life with you dog should be enjoyable, get started and you’ll thank me later ✌️
