Allowing your dog to express natural or breed specific behaviours can actually PREVENT undesirable behaviours from being shown. *big read below but good tips for you*

Allowing your dog to display these behaviours means they know when is appropriate to display them and when they need to listen to YOU. Not allowing your dog to display these behaviours is when "undesirable " behaviours will be shown such as: not listening to recall *smelling something interesting* *chasing squirells* - they just want to do dog things, and we have to allow this in a controlled way.

Purdy - Sprocker Spaniel (spaniels are great gun dogs, meaning high prey drive) here I am allowing Purdy to explore a hole where she can sniff, dig and use her natural instincs. Purdy will be praised for this. Although I do not use her as a gun dog this is her natural behaviour so she should be allowed to express it. I am comfortable enough with Purdy expressing this behaviour as I can break her away from this behaviour which is something dogs need training to do.

Albus - Hound type (hounds also have a high prey drive due to hunting) Here Albus has found an interesting scent which Michael is allowing him to smell to allow for natural behaviours to be shown. Albus has only recently been rehoused with Michael, which is why Albus is on the lead. Michael is showing Albus you can preform these behaviours but need to stop when asked. Having Albus on the lead allows Michael to break to behaviour and return to walk. Rather than Albus bolting off with the scent. In time, off leash behaviours like this can be displayed but only once the breaking of behaviour and recall is perfected.

Albus isn’t toilet trained. Despite being 1 he doesn’t know where he should and shouldn’t go to the toilet. We have had a few accidents in the house. How are we toilet training?
We are using ‘capture’ training. When he performs the behaviour, we mark and reward. So we have “captured” the behaviour. This way, he is learning it’s appropriate to wee outside if you want rewards (and he always wants rewards). We always take his treat bag out when we go anywhere.
How are you toileting training your dog?

As you can see we have been working on some recall. I know I know, we are using a extension lead. But this is his first week in a home! He likes to tire himself out with sniffing, a extension lead stays off the floor as he gets tangled up in his long lead. For a dog that was never on a lead. He is doing very well!

Crate training is an important part of Albus’ progression. He is learning his crate is a safe space where he feels comfortable. This also allows him to spend time in his own space to prevent separation anxiety and learn to self sooth. The crate should NEVER be used as punishment. This is where he eats, sleeps and sometimes plays. He is learning that he performs the fundamentals of life here. So it has to be safe.

Ensure you follow us to see Albus’ progression in training! You might be able to pick up a few tips.

Dogs have a sense of smell 40x strong and better than our own! Even though they have a innate ability to use it, they still need practice to perfect it. There are many ways you an incorporate sniffing into your training! This will fine tune your dogs ability to use its nose and create intense mental stimulation, this will tire your dog out quickly.
Try hiding treats around the home and use the command ‘find’ and your dog can go sniffing out treats! .
