Welcome to our final day of happy, healthy new year.

I hope you have enjoyed following along with me this January. I may not have done very well at keeping myself healthy this month but I’m definitely happy and so are my dogs!!

For this final thought piece, I want to cover training and learning.

We may not think of training as something we can do to keep our dogs happy and healthy but we know that dogs have an amazing capacity to learn - that’s why they are used by humans to do so many varieties of jobs.

During the first 6 months of their lives, their brains are like sponges, soaking up so much information about how the world around them works. Waiting to train until after this time is a crazy idea - in fact, any time after then, we are undoing things rather than training new things.

Training can help with lots of aspects including
Building trust and bonding relationships
Creating calmness and rest
Promoting problem solving and adaptability to new situations
Giving suitable outlets for breed specific behaviours

Learning and training also increases the anticipatory chemical, dopamine in the brain. Literally the chemical that allows us to look forward to things and be optimistic about life.

Don’t put training off, start with your puppy right from day one.

If you are reading and wondering what to train, grab our tricks for ten online course and start teaching a new, fun trick every day for 10 days (link in comments) … what have you got to lose?

Join me in February for our Love Your Dog month as we explore all things we love about dogs

28/01/2022

Welcome to training Friday!

Each week we will give you a simple exercise you can train over the weekend which brings stability and works on the core strength of your dog.

This week is take a bow

This exercise stretches out the back of the dog and creates flexibility of the spine similar to yoga moves in humans.

Be careful not to over do this, and go slowly as it can be tricky for the dog to understand what you want them to do.

Do not do this if your dog has known spine or elbow issues.

Have a watch of the video and show us in the comments how you get on.

Happy Training!

Today is the last of my case studies on hidden health problems and I want to tell you about 2 dogs - both large breeds - who presented with

Excessive jumping up on people
Inability to listen especially when asked to sit or lie down
Pulling on lead that was uncomfortable for their owners

I saw some commonality over both these dogs

A look of being unbalanced with more muscle on one side than the other
Fur changes over the hips - greasy fur patches
The need to lie down after exercise which did not fit with their age

On review from their vets, both dogs were found to have hip dysplasia, a painful condition where the hip sockets are too shallow and the ball is not formed properly. Dogs can start showing symptoms from 5 months old.

For both of these dogs, pain killers made an immediate difference although both went on to need surgery and further treatment, hip dysplasia can be treated conservatively

My biggest piece of advice to come from looking at my case studies is to always get your dog checked out if there's a change in their behaviour. Behaviour is an outward expression of a need that is not met, not just naughty or bad behaviour.

Let’s keep our dogs as happy and healthy as we can!

Welcome to our final instalment of people who can help keep your dog healthy and happy.

This week we are chatting to Clare, our wonderful groomer. Groomers can see your dogs every 4-6 weeks and are some of the best people involved in keeping them in tip top condition

Hi Clare, introduce yourself!

I’m Clare and own Cut & Cuddle Pet Groomers. I’m a City & Guilds qualified groomer.

What can a groomer help with that we may not think of straight away?

As groomers we get much more ‘hands on’ time with your dog than most people in your dogs life. Each groom starts with a health check and so we are able to spot changes or new health concerns easily, often we will see ear irritation, dental problems, skin issues and some less common things that I have noticed have led to: spinal condition diagnosed, Cushings disease, unusual eye clouding which has potentially saved the sight in that eye. As groomer we are in no way qualified to diagnose or suggest treatment but we can and should flag things to owners as and when we see it.

At what age would you recommend grooming starts?

It is safe for puppies to come into a grooming salon after they’ve cleared their vaccinations and waiting period. The earlier they can make their first visit the better, generally I see puppies from about 14 weeks old.

How can owners help?

Owners are 90% the reason dogs are good at the groomer, regular brushing, bathing, noise desensitisation and handling at home help build the foundations for a lifetime of great grooming. Your groomer will be happy to support you with suggestions of brushes, how to brush, best ways to bath and what areas to practice. I often get thanked for making puppies confident in appointments but the truth is I play a small part in their overall success.

What should people look for in a groomer?

Picking your groomer can be a bit of a minefield at times but my suggestions (aside from qualifications) are to visit a few to get a feel for the space and the groomer, do you both have the same values for example I focus on co-operative care - health and happiness will always come before the haircut itself. There’s no referral process for groomers so utilise the people you’ve already met as part of your dogs journey. Your trainer, behaviourist or vet will probably have good relationships with several and know a potential match for you.

Where can we find you?

I’d love for you follow me on my social media pages - Cut & Cuddle Pet Groomers or if you’d like an appointment or to join my Puppy Grooming Programme then get in touch www.cutandcuddle.co.uk

Thanks Clare, you are a star!

Our final fact to do with health for this month is all about water.

Access to fresh water is one of the 5 freedoms and comes under the Welfare of Dogs Code of Practice 2017 Gov.UK.

If your dog is left for long periods of time, please make sure they have access to water, especially if crated. Most will need a drink when woken from sleep. Use a rabbit bottle or a raised bowl that attaches to the side of the crate to avoid spillages.

There is increasing advice being given about restricting water to aid in toilet training - this is going against meeting the fundamental needs and rights of an animal and should not be used under any circumstances. Puppies may take time to be dry overnight and your job is to get up and let them out. It won’t last forever.

So how much should your dog drink? When is too much or too little?

On average, dogs need one ounce per pound of body weight of water intake per day.

Dogs will drink less if they are on a wet food diet and will need more if they have a dry kibble. Hot weather will require more just like it does with us.

If your dog is drinking in excess, this could be a sign of underlying medical problems especially if they are also weeing more often or larger amounts.

And finally, water bowls are a breeding ground for bacteria due to all the saliva they come into contact with so clean them thoroughly once a day with hot, soapy water.

Have you ever asked for directions or a phone number only to have forgotten what your were told 2 seconds later?

It's the same when we are coaching or talking to our clients. One of the common things trainers tell me is "but I told them what to do"

You see, knowing is not the same as doing.

During The Missing Peace, we explore how you can make your coaching really sink in so it becomes second nature to clients and they remember much more about the information you are giving than you would think.

During our programme, we discuss and provide with the tools to not only become a dog detective but also to create assessments that work and get you the information you need.

Who's watching Line of Duty?

I'm 4 episodes in and I haven't got a scooby what is going on!!

So much jargon and use of abbreviations, my brain takes so long to compute what's been said that I've missed the next 3 scenes.

It can be like this with our clients. We have a dictionary of dog training and behaviour in our heads that we forget owners are learning a new language from scratch.

In our 12 week course, we help you build the foundations you need to get information across to people in easy to understand ways, use videos to help and ways to present jargon in easy to digest chunks.

Lockdown is easing and we are starting to get out and see those lovely clients again.

If your diary is packed with 121 sessions of people you are likely to only see once, listen up!

You will burn out so quickly and what's more - you will overwhelm people by feeling like to have to cram all your knowledge into 60 minutes.

And guess what, the client won't be successful, leading you to believe that you're not good enough at what you do .

Come and join us in The Missing Peace and see how to build your perfect programme, creating success for you and your clients over and over again

Did you know that 75% of people (your clients or potential clients) don't view the world in the same way as you do?

Some like to really think about things, some like to stay in control. Others get all enthusiastic but are highly unlikely to finish anything!

In The Missing Peace, we explore how understanding personailty types plus listening to how people are really feeling using what we know about the grief cycle, create the keys to getting success with all people and not just the ones who think the same way as you.

How are you all doing?

What a strange year it's been!

I reckon, at the moment, you are either over-run with enquiries or there is tumbleweed in your inbox.

Enquiries are what drive our businesses, yet can be a real inconvenience espeically when there are too many.

Often the questions people ask us trigger feelings in use that we aren't not particularly proud of or really push our buttons.

One of the first things we look at in The Missing Peace 12 week course is how to create a fresh look at enquiries and embrace the people asking for our help

When you see people doing what you want to do, how do you feel?

-Useless?
- Never get there?
- Inspired?
- Determined?

My guess is that the difference between those who make you feel inadequate and those who inspire you is the way they show up with people.

Inspirational people are leaders:
They keep their word
They are generous
They have time for people
They take committed action
They ask for help
They build team

Who has been your biggest inspiration?
Who can you inspire?

Frequently Asked Question:

How many Reactive Dog clients do you take on at once?

The answer is 8 and the reasons are
- financially 8 is enough
- my programmes involve me being on touch with clients every 2-3 days
- this means there is a high emotional cost to me and I can't do that time and time again
- details are important to me so I prefer to work intensively
- integrity and keeping my word are important to me and any more case load and I start compromising which leads to me beating myself up when I promise and don't deliver

How many clients can you cope with and consistently deliver high value to?
If the number is less than your current case load - time to put your prices up!!

Yes, I did say - put your prices up!!

Many of you heard our story in my summit talk.

I often find trainers and behaviourists who find the breed difficult and hard to understand.

Hello folks!

It's been a funny old week with me gaining a kidney infection and feeling pretty rubbish!

Still in the midst of it, I can find things to be grateful for and things I can still do to move my business forwards.

I'm so grateful for the health care system in the UK and for my fiance who was here to look after me. as he works from home. Grateful I have lockdown to have space and online ways of keeping in touch with clients.

I haven't had the energy to concentrate on anything big but could still
- send am email
- track my numbers
- schedule a social media post
- create a meme
- brainstorm ideas

So today- tell me:
How do you look after yourself?
What bite sized tasks can you do today to move your business forward?
I'm starting with tidying my desk!!

Student Success Story

Melanie - Melanie joined The Missing Peace last year, exhausted and burnt out from seeing too many one to one clients, rarely seeing any through and overhwleming herself and her customers in the process.

We started by setting up her programme - this was hard as she really felt she didn't have the skills to do the work, seeing people once kind of suited her!!
So we discussed cases, set up the sessions, looked at results, set up the next session and walked her through step by step.
Armed with support, skills and back up info, things began to really look for Melanie

A few months later and she has savings, a waiting list and faith in herself - plus so much knowledge

I have loved working with her and it has been so rewarding for me to see her success

You have got what it takes, let me help you and guide you.......

How many of you dread picking up the phone?

What if I told you, "you don't have to" ?

Often, answering the phone call lead to clients pouring out loads of info and leaving us overwhelmed and wanting to get rid of them.

It's much better to schedule a time when you can give people your full attention and direct the call the way you want it to go from the beginning

You can either have a physical diary or use an online tool such as Calendly or Acuity

Or better still, get someone else to answer for you!

Much love

It's nearly 2021 and a time for reflection. It's been a hard year for all if us and yet, I am excited about what has happened and what 2021 will bring

The major quesiton I am reflecting on is
How have I shown up for my clients and potential clients this last year?

When people have had contact with me, how have they felt afterwards - heard? respected? understood? judged? stupid? confused ? or helped?

Have I been patient? non-judgmental? hasty? gentle? true to my word? on time? available?

Who have I been that has made my customers succeed this year?
How have I shown up for my students?

And above all, how can I take what has worked into the New Year and leave behind those aspects that don't serve me or bring out my best side

What are you reflecting on as this year draws to a close?
I'd love to hear your thoughts ......

Happy in between week to you all!

I wanted to jump in and let you know about some of our student success stories.

Before coming on the course, most of my students were feeling overwhelmed and seeing customers once or twice meaning success was always limited.

Only a couple of weeks in and things were alreadty changing for them

Here's what one of them said about the course
“I cannot recommend this programme highly enough. The detail is incredible and the knowledge I have gained is huge. It has literally changed the whole way I work with clients”

And for someone who was new in her business
“I was worried I would feel lost as I am new to this but the value of the content is excellent and I am confident to begin to work in this area. It’s been incredible and I look forward to every week of learning”

Nothing makes my heart smile more than seeing you guys flourish and bloom in your businesses, I am so excited about being able to reach more people in 2021
