Dogs and cats can sustain broken bones just like we can! ๐ฆด they commonly occur as a result of falling off things, vehicle accidents and other traumatic events. However, in some cases they can be caused by certain diseases such as cancer.
Clinical signs include lameness, pain, and swelling. X-Rays are useful in diagnosing the location and extent of the fracture. Treatments are then based on the type of fracture, age and health of the animal, technical expertise of the surgeon, and owner finances.
Physiotherapy is one of the most important aspects of repairing fractures both during and after the healing process, ensuring the break heals as well as possible. Proper rehabilitation also makes sure that the animal learns to use the limb correctly and in a timely fashion.
As the limb begins to heal, and the patient starts to use it themselves once again, the exercises progress in intensity and duration.
If your pet has sustained a fracture, speak to your veterinarian about a referral to Physiotherapy to ensure you pet has the best chance of recovery and rehabilitation.
