Dogs and cats can sustain broken bones just like we can! ๐Ÿฆด they commonly occur as a result of falling off things, vehicle accidents and other traumatic events. However, in some cases they can be caused by certain diseases such as cancer.

Clinical signs include lameness, pain, and swelling. X-Rays are useful in diagnosing the location and extent of the fracture. Treatments are then based on the type of fracture, age and health of the animal, technical expertise of the surgeon, and owner finances.

Physiotherapy is one of the most important aspects of repairing fractures both during and after the healing process, ensuring the break heals as well as possible. Proper rehabilitation also makes sure that the animal learns to use the limb correctly and in a timely fashion.

As the limb begins to heal, and the patient starts to use it themselves once again, the exercises progress in intensity and duration.

If your pet has sustained a fracture, speak to your veterinarian about a referral to Physiotherapy to ensure you pet has the best chance of recovery and rehabilitation.

Poppy ๐Ÿพ

Poppy underwent surgery in May after slipping down the stairs and rupturing the cranial cruciate ligament in her left knee.

Over the next few weeks we will work on building up the muscles in her back legs to reduce the chance of re injury and eventually allow Poppy to return to offlead exercise!

MUSCLE ATROPHY

Muscle atrophy is the wasting and loss of muscle and is common following surgery or injury due to disuse of the affected limb.

Causes of muscle atrophy include:

โ€ข The natural aging process
โ€ข Illness or disease
โ€ข Reduced activity.
โ€ข Injury.
โ€ข Surgery on a limb
โ€ข Pain from joint injuries
โ€ข Arthritis
โ€ข Extended crate rest

โ€ข Weight loss
โ€ข Soft, weak, flabby muscles
โ€ข Limping or paw dragging
โ€ข Unbalanced gait or loss of coordination
โ€ข Progressive weakness in the rear limbs
โ€ข Rear limbs that can no longer support body weight
โ€ข Difficulty holding up the body
โ€ข Sagging back or other changes in posture
โ€ข Increased lethargy or inactivity
โ€ข Crossing the legs when walking or standing

Earlier this year Lucy underwent surgery to correct a ruptured ligament in her knee. As you can see in the photo, the muscles in her right leg are much smaller and flatter compared to her left, due to a long period of disuse. Following surgery Lucy was on strict crate rest for 6 weeks to allow time for her knee to heal, only going out to use the toilet. Due to pain, Lucy began hopping on her good leg to prevent putting her treated leg on the ground. This meant that the treated leg was not being used at all for a long period of time, resulting in significant muscle wastage.

Now that Lucy is attending Physiotherapy, we can begin to improve her muscle bulk through lots of strengthening work, exercise, as well as using equipment such as neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). I look forward to seeing her progress over the next couple of months.

So pleased with Rooโ€™s progress over the past two months. Roo came to physio with suspected injury to his flexor tendon on his hind limb, causing his foot and toes on his left foot to appeared โ€˜flattenedโ€™. LUCY ๐Ÿ’™

Lucy the Jack Russell Terrier was referred to physiotherapy for rehab following a TPLO surgery to correct her torn cranial cruciate ligament. Sheโ€™s still struggling to weight bear on her operated leg so our rehab plan will involve lots of balance and proprioception work as well as strengthening of the hindlimb muscles!

Looking forward to seeing how she progresses over the next couple of months ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

03/04/2023

Cruciate ligament injury is one of the most common orthopaedic problems seen in dogs. The cruciate ligaments are two bands of fibrous tissue located in each knee joint, joining the femur to the tibia. The term โ€˜cruciateโ€™ means โ€˜to form a crossโ€™ - the cruciate ligaments cross over one another from the inside to the outside of the knee joint and vice versa.

The majority of cases require surgical repair, however in certain cases can be managed conservatively. Physiotherapy can help improve your dogโ€™s surgical outcome post-operatively and can assist in pain management, improving strength and increasing range of movement.

31/03/2023

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common chronic canine conditions, affecting approximately 1 in 3 dogs. It involves inflammation and degeneration in joints leading to pain, stiffness and difficulty walking. Osteoarthritis is incurable and progressive and can severely affect the quality of life of your dog.

Common signs of OA include:

๐Ÿพ Difficulty getting up and down
๐Ÿพ Walking stiffly
๐Ÿพ Lameness in one or more legs
๐Ÿพ Reluctance to go up and down steps
๐Ÿพ Reluctance to jump up or down (onto/off furniture or into/out of a vehicle)
๐Ÿพ Reluctance to be touched on some parts of the body
๐Ÿพ Loss of stamina or being slower on walks or cutting them short
๐Ÿพ Unexpected aggression toward other dogs or humans

Complimentary therapies such as physiotherapy can be very beneficial for dogs with OA to help enhance their quality of life. Physiotherapy treatment includes modalities such as manual therapy, massage, electrotherapy, and therapeutic exercises.

The main aims of physiotherapy in the management of osteoarthritis are to:

Relieve joint pain
Relieve muscular tension
Maintain joint range of movement
Strengthen muscles
Weight loss โ€“ if necessary

PetPro Physiotherapy Senior Dog Package is designed for older dogs living with osteoarthritis or other age-related conditions. It is a series of 4 sessions (which can be taken either weekly or fortnightly) incorporating physiotherapy techniques and exercise to help manage your dogโ€™s osteoarthritis symptoms.

โš ๏ธ BALL THROWERS

High speed impact, repetitive jumping, twisting, braking and skidding can put enormous pressure and strain through your dogs joints and can lead to a number of injuries, as well as long-term conditions like osteoarthritis.

Additionally, ball launchers may lead to increased production of adrenaline and cortisol, which, over a prolonged period of time can trigger problematic behaviours such as frustration intolerance, unpredictability and obsession.

Some signs of obsessive behaviour include:

๐Ÿพ Constantly dropping the ball at your feet
๐Ÿพ Barking or whining when youโ€™re not throwing the ball
๐Ÿพ Refusing to engage in other activities
๐Ÿพ Being obsessed with pockets and hands on walks

Itโ€™s essential that dog owners are aware of the negative effects of excessive ball throwing, and can spot signs of pain and obsessive behaviour to reduce the chances of longer term problems.

Great video showing how different types of dog harness affect range of movement and gait.

Try and avoid harnesses that go horizontally across the dogโ€™s shoulders as these may reduce shoulder extension and forelimb protraction.

A good, non-restrictive harness is one that fits perfectly, snugly (you should just be able to fit two fingers underneath the harness on all sides) and doesnโ€™t cause any friction or excessive pressure.
