Timmy presented to our Ulverston branch in October with a sore, swollen and slightly cloudy right eye. Using our ‘Tonovet’, we measured Timmy’s intraocular pressure which allowed us to diagnose him with glaucoma (too high a pressure in the eye). Following a course of specific eye drops, we are pleased to say Timmy’s intraocular pressure is now back within normal range, his eye looks much more normal and he is feeling much happier! What a star patient he has been for our vet Charlotte B (who has a huge soft spot for collies!)🌟

10 week old kitten, Loki, was in for his first vaccination with us recently at our Barrow branch. Pleased to say he didn’t even notice the injection with the help of a lickimat! 🌟
How cute is he!? 🤭❤️

National Stress Awareness Day

Wednesday 6th November marks National Stress Awareness Day, which seeks to raise awareness of the negative effects that stress can have on our health. While stress can sometimes serve as a helpful motivator, too much of it can negatively impact our mood, body, and mind.

Did you know, our pets play an important role in stress reduction? Interacting with pets has a soothing effect on the body, helping to lower blood pressure, ease anxiety, and increase feelings of social support. Petting or cuddling animals can release oxytocin, a hormone that promotes relaxation and bonding, while also lowering cortisol levels, which are linked to
stress.
What are your and your pets favourite way to de-stress?

Happy National Black Cat Awareness Day! 🐈‍⬛

Today we are celebrating all our black feline friends - they are most famous for being Halloween symbols, but black cats can be associated with good luck, love, and even money!

Badger came in for his annual check up and booster vaccination this week - he can be quite nervous at the vets, not really wanting to be examined. Today, with the help of a lickimat, he did amazing and was so brave - didn’t need to be held at all for the examination or injection! Well done Badger 🦡🌟

Can anyone guess how much he weighs? ⚖️

*Disclaimer, all 4 paws were on the scales for the final weigh in 😅

Did you know that dogs can donate blood too? 🩸🐕

Just like the human blood service, Pet Blood Bank UK run donation sessions across the UK and they are looking for large, confident, happy and healthy dogs to become lifesavers 🐶

In order to prioritise your dogs welfare, they must meet the following criteria to give blood:

Fit and healthy
Between one and nine years old
Weigh more than 25kg
Have a good temperament
Have never travelled outside of the UK and Ireland
Not on any medication

We are hoping to become a host venue for Pet Blood Bank here at Church Walk Vets in Barrow, but to start hosting blood donation sessions we need to compile a list of potential donors in this area. Please email our nurse Molly to register your interest – [email protected]

If you are interested and your dog meets the criteria, you can learn more about Pet Blood Bank at: https://www.petbloodbankuk.org/pet-owners/dog-blood-donation/🐶🩸

🏠 HOME VISITS 🚐

We understand how stressful it can be for our patients and their owners to attend the vets. So we have made the decision to start a “Home Visit Day” once a month, to offer routine appointments such as vaccinations and medication checks!

Our first home visit day will be:

⭐️ FRIDAY 15TH NOVEMBER ⭐️

Home visit appointments are perfect for clients who struggle to get their cats into carriers, dogs who get scared and anxious at the vets, clients who are unable to attend the practice due to transport or disabilities.

🐾 Please contact us if you would like to have your pets next routine appointment take place in their/your own home 🐾

🩺 Did you know our nurses can…
…run weight clinics! 🐶🐱

Today is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day.

Did you know overweight pets can be predisposed to life-limiting conditions such as, osteoarthritis, diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer?

Maintaining a healthy weight for your pet gives them a better quality of life. Weight clinics allow our nurses to provide extra support and information, when it can be hard to know where to start!

Just to note that weight clinics are also suitable for underweight patients.
