Let’s talk about importance of decompression and rest for our dogs. 🐕 🥱

We have just got back from a 5 days camping trip at a huge agility competition. The dogs had a great time… and although only Millie took part in the competition they are all absolutely exhausted today…

The change of location, change of routine, the super busy environment of the largest dog agility shows in UK, many hours spent outside each day… even for dogs who are used to travelling and staying in new places, it is a lot of stimulation and it is super important we allow them sufficient time to rest to recuperate. ☺️

You might have heard of decompression period being recommended for newly adopted dogs (it would be much longer in those cases) but every dog will benefit from a decompression period after big events such as trips away, large family events or even school holidays if your dog lives with children.

Our dogs go away with us a lot and when we return from any trip, the next 2 days are always dedicated to decompression and rest. 🧘‍♀️ 💤 🤍

Decompression period is a dedicated time for your dog to rest, reset and lower not only stress but also excitement levels.

How does decompression period look like? 🤔

As with anything else this will vary from dog to dog based on their individual needs and character traits but here are couple of useful tips to get you started:
✅ Dedicte at least 2 days to a decompression period, some dogs might need more
✅ Reduce exercise - aim for one 20mins sniffy walk in a quiet area away per day
✅ Provide long lasting chew or a stuffed food toy but make sure it is easy enough for them to work with and does not cause frustration
✅ Keep your household calm & keep visitors to a minimum where possible
✅ Ensure your dog has a quiet area that they can retreat to
✅ Let your dog be 😊
Do not interrupt their rest, do only as much with them as they need to be settled, some dogs might not need any walk, training or activities during a 2 day decompression period as long as they have access to a garden for toileting.

Let us know how your dog’s decompression periods look like in the comments below 👇

Food for thought… 🤔💭

Meeting our dog’s needs, including species and breed specific needs IS NOT OPTIONAL, we owe them that.

WE made the decision to bring a dog to our home, WE chose that specific breed and it is OUR responsibility to educate ourselves on the appropriate care for our particular dog and OUR duty to meet ALL of their needs.

Remember, the fact that out dog is surviving, doesn’t mean they are thriving! 🤍

Enrichment isn't optional. It's not a nice, extra thing we should be doing for our animals - it's a critical part of their well-being, health and happiness.

Enrichment is ensuring we are meeting all of a species needs.

This is not optional.

Meet Nana, 7 month old St. Bernard! 😍

I have had the pleasure of taking this beautiful girl on some training walks last week and….wow! Huge well done to her owners for all the work they have done with Nana so far! 👏

While I cannot take any credit for training this beutiful girl, I wanted to share her skills to show that there really isn’t any need for force and aversive tools in dog training. 🛑✋

ALL credit for Nana’s beautiful lead walking goes solely to her fantastic owners! 🙌

This giant, young dog walks beautifully on a loose lead on just flat collar and standard lead. 👌
There was absolutely no need for choke chains, slip leads, prongs or lead ‘pops’…. all this achieved with FORCE FREE, POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT only. 🥳

Far too often we still see ‘professionals’ using aversive training methods! Methods based on dominance theory (which btw has been disproven by its original creator!!), methods which inflict ❗️discomfort, pain and fear❗️on the dogs they are working with!

So this is my plea to all dog owners out there…. Please, please do your research when choosing a dog trainer or a behaviourist.
Choose those who use positive methods backed by science and are experienced in applying force free training to help solve a variety of behavioural struggles. Those who help you understand why your dog behaves a particular way and show you ethical, kind training methods to help you and your best friend.

Anyone who can solve all your dog’s struggles in one session USES FORCE!
Anyone who calls themselves a ‘balanced’ trainer USES FORCE!
Anyone who talks about dominance and being an alpha USES FORCE!

It’s 2024, we should know better! So let’s do better, for the sake of our dogs!

Let’s talk about food toys 🐕 🧩 Specifically food toys for wet and raw dog food. 🥩

I love using food toys with our dogs, I really feel like they are such a great addition to any dog’s life which delivers extra stimulation, works their sense and brings some variety into meal times.

But it is important to chose the right food toys for your dog based on their temperament, behaviour struggles and of course anatomy.

Hear me out… far too often dog parents aim to make food toys as hard and as long lasting as possible which can put your dog off using them or worse, grow frustration, cause destructive behaviours and reduce your dog’s motivation and drive.

Let me clear something up, building tolerance of frustration is a super important part of dog training and food toys can help with that if it is done correctly and paced appropriately for each dog. 😊

Dog toys should:
✅ Promote licking and or chewing
✅ Offer a healthy outlet for energy
✅ Challenge just enough for the dog to want to engage but not enough to cause high frustration
✅ Be size appropriate
✅ Be an additional way of feeding your dog and NOT the only way
✅ Be used safely

Couple of things to consider when using food toys:
❓Is the toy strong enough to prevent my dog from chewing it up with the food?
❓Is the opening from which the food comes out of appropriately shaped and sized for the shape of my dog’s face?
❓Is the way I am using the food too challenging and am I increasing the challenge gradually? Thawed out food versus frozen? Lightly packed versus tightly packed? Wet food on its own versus wet food mixed with kibble?
❓ Is the toy causing any worrying behaviours in my dog? Whining while eating / barking excessively at the toy? Inappropriate guarding? Disinterest or quitting?

The toys in the photo are the toys which are most appropriate for our three dogs and definately my favourite in terms of quality and durability but again, for my dogs, which doesn’t mean they would be as good for yours 😊

And if you would like to try the K9 Connectable toys, there is a cheeky discount code hiding in the comments below for you 👇 😉

Do you use food toys with your dog? Let us know which ones are your and your dog’s favourite 😃

The temperatures are on the rise this week ☀️and while most of us cannot wait for the the Summer to arrive, we must remember to keep our pets safe 🐕🥵

On those super hot days:
✅ Walk your dog before 7am and after 9pm ⏱
✅ Keep exercise short and light
✅ Paddling pool is a great way to help them stay cool 💦
✅ Keep your dog in the shade ☁️
✅ Keep their paws off concrete and sand (it can get extremely hot!) 🐾
✅ Provide plenty of water 💦
✅ A cooling mat can be a great way to keep them cool ❄️
✅ Keep them off artificial grass (it can get extremely hot!)
✅ Always take water with you when taking your dog out

Little Bruno absolutely smashing his first go at Boundary games in week 1 of our Perfect Puppy course 🤩

Boundary game is a way of teaching settling on a bed but not in the traditional way you might be used to 😃

The traditional way of teaching a ‘bed’ command is often setting our dogs up for fail from the start for several reasons:
❌ it names the behaviour BEFORE there is any value for it
❌ it builds value into following a hand lure (and consequently causes dogs to follow the hand back out of the bed) rather than building value into being on a bed
❌ it often relies on a ‘stay’ or ‘wait’ command which sets unrealistic expectations for the owner
❌ does not deliver reliable duration

Boundary games:
✅ build huge value into the bed BEFORE a verbal cue is attached to the behavopir to ensire the cue doesn’t lose its value
✅ shapes the behaviour making it much more conscious learning process for the dog
✅ builds reliable duration by teaching a release cue
✅ puts the duration into the verbal cue rather then a particular bed itself so the same behaviour can be performed on variety of objects by using the same verbal cue

🔥 Canine Conditioning & Fitness Class 🔥

⭐ A science-based programme delivered by a qualified and licensed canine conditioning coach ⭐

Have you ever considered the impact of everyday activities on your dog's physical health? 🤔
Living on hard flooring, having overgrown nails, always being walked on the same side, playing fetch daily, jumping in and out of the car are all likely to lead to stiffness and micro-injuries which over time can manifest as more serious physical problems and onset of early arthritis.

😱 Did you know that arthritis is the most common cause of chronic pain in dogs? It affects 80% of dogs over the age of 8 years old and 20% of dogs before their first birthday 😱

Strong, flexible and balance muscles provide the essential support to our dog’s skeleton and will help keep our dogs active and pain-free for longer.

Join our class and help your dog…
➡ Develop better body awareness
➡ Promote correct muscle recruitment
➡ Grow flexibility in muscles to prevent stiffness
➡ Improve balance and coordination
➡ Build strength
➡ Address muscular imbalances cause by everyday activities e.g. walking on the same side or daily game of fetch
➡ Delay onset of arthritis and help relieve arthritis-related pain

Behavioural benefits…
🐾 Promotes calmness - slow, controlled physical activity can help quiet down overexcited dogs
🐾 Build confidence - working with novel objects (perches, poles, cones etc.) can improve your dog's confidence and optimism in novel situations
🐾 Grows focus and develop strong working relationship

Who is this class for?
🐕 Growing puppies & adolescent dogs
🐕 Adult dogs of all fitness levels
🐕 Senior dogs
🐕 Breeds with predispositions to knee, hip and elbow issues
🐕 Sports dogs
🐕 Show dogs
🐕 Overweight dogs

Each exercise is based on slow, controlled, low impact movement and can be adapted to the individual needs of each dog in the group.

Never underestimate the power of trick training and happy behaviours 🔥 💪

Those who attended any of my courses will know how much I love building ‘happy behaviours’ into our dogs. 😃 🐕

What do I mean by ‘happy behaviours’? 🤔
These are simple behaviours or tricks which are taught with low pressure and high success. 👌These could be spins, front foot targeting, nose targeting or any other simple dog trick your dog enjoys.
We then use these to build our dog’s confidence and optimism in situations they struggle with.

Here is Jasper working on overcoming his fear of vet visits using some of the tricks he has learnt in our Trick Training course 👏🥳

➡️ ‘Sleepy’ - building stillness and focus on targeting while allowing to be examined
➡️ ‘Touch’ - nose targeting equipment commonly used in routine vet consultation 🩺 to build positive associations
➡️ ‘Whisper’ - for muzzle training

🤍 Confidence 🩵 Optimism 🧡 Cooperative care

Good boy Jasper!

Every Dog Can...

‘Every Dog Can’ is what we believe in!

The tiny puppy who is ‘to young to understand’, the tenacious teenager who is ‘too crazy to listen’, the ‘out of control’ adolescent Lab, the ‘reactive’ terrier, the ‘too old to learn new tricks’ senior, the ‘lunging’, the ‘barking’, the ‘distracted’, the ‘nervous’... they all can! Every dog can!

We use force free, positive, game based training to teach life concepts rather than behaviours. Concepts such as value for proximity, calmness, impulse control, confidence, focus and optimism to name just a few. Concepts that can be transferred to all areas of your dog’s life. Concepts that will transform your naughty (but nice!) dog into a loving, happy and well-mannered dog.
