Meet Nana, 7 month old St. Bernard! 😍
I have had the pleasure of taking this beautiful girl on some training walks last week and….wow! Huge well done to her owners for all the work they have done with Nana so far! 👏
While I cannot take any credit for training this beutiful girl, I wanted to share her skills to show that there really isn’t any need for force and aversive tools in dog training. 🛑✋
ALL credit for Nana’s beautiful lead walking goes solely to her fantastic owners! 🙌
This giant, young dog walks beautifully on a loose lead on just flat collar and standard lead. 👌
There was absolutely no need for choke chains, slip leads, prongs or lead ‘pops’…. all this achieved with FORCE FREE, POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT only. 🥳
Far too often we still see ‘professionals’ using aversive training methods! Methods based on dominance theory (which btw has been disproven by its original creator!!), methods which inflict ❗️discomfort, pain and fear❗️on the dogs they are working with!
So this is my plea to all dog owners out there…. Please, please do your research when choosing a dog trainer or a behaviourist.
Choose those who use positive methods backed by science and are experienced in applying force free training to help solve a variety of behavioural struggles. Those who help you understand why your dog behaves a particular way and show you ethical, kind training methods to help you and your best friend.
Anyone who can solve all your dog’s struggles in one session USES FORCE!
Anyone who calls themselves a ‘balanced’ trainer USES FORCE!
Anyone who talks about dominance and being an alpha USES FORCE!
It’s 2024, we should know better! So let’s do better, for the sake of our dogs!

Little Bruno absolutely smashing his first go at Boundary games in week 1 of our Perfect Puppy course 🤩
Boundary game is a way of teaching settling on a bed but not in the traditional way you might be used to 😃
The traditional way of teaching a ‘bed’ command is often setting our dogs up for fail from the start for several reasons:
❌ it names the behaviour BEFORE there is any value for it
❌ it builds value into following a hand lure (and consequently causes dogs to follow the hand back out of the bed) rather than building value into being on a bed
❌ it often relies on a ‘stay’ or ‘wait’ command which sets unrealistic expectations for the owner
❌ does not deliver reliable duration
Boundary games:
✅ build huge value into the bed BEFORE a verbal cue is attached to the behavopir to ensire the cue doesn’t lose its value
✅ shapes the behaviour making it much more conscious learning process for the dog
✅ builds reliable duration by teaching a release cue
✅ puts the duration into the verbal cue rather then a particular bed itself so the same behaviour can be performed on variety of objects by using the same verbal cue

Never underestimate the power of trick training and happy behaviours 🔥 💪
Those who attended any of my courses will know how much I love building ‘happy behaviours’ into our dogs. 😃 🐕
What do I mean by ‘happy behaviours’? 🤔
These are simple behaviours or tricks which are taught with low pressure and high success. 👌These could be spins, front foot targeting, nose targeting or any other simple dog trick your dog enjoys.
We then use these to build our dog’s confidence and optimism in situations they struggle with.
Here is Jasper working on overcoming his fear of vet visits using some of the tricks he has learnt in our Trick Training course 👏🥳
➡️ ‘Sleepy’ - building stillness and focus on targeting while allowing to be examined
➡️ ‘Touch’ - nose targeting equipment commonly used in routine vet consultation 🩺 to build positive associations
➡️ ‘Whisper’ - for muzzle training
🤍 Confidence 🩵 Optimism 🧡 Cooperative care
Good boy Jasper!

Scentwork! 🙌
Millie loves it and I really need to make more time for it. It is a great way to fulfill the natural instinct of a crazy working cocker spaniel 🐕🤪
We haven’t done outdoor searches for ages so I was pretty happy with her just working through it, especially as there are other dogs working around us.
The video below is her 5th search in that session and she was cooked after that 😴💤
Remember, mental stimulation will always tire your dog out faster 👌 and help fulfil their natural instincts.

Happy Birthday Milo! 🥳 14 years old today! 💙 Despite his age, Milo is still a very active little dog who loves adventures and of course pubs! 🤣
Let’s celebrate all the senior dogs out there 🥰
Share a photo of your senior dog in the comments 👇 to celebrate with us! 🎉
P.S. Did you know that dogs are classed as senior dogs at just 8 years old?😱
(7-8yo for large breeds, 8-9yo for medium breeds and 9-10yo for small breeds)
Looking for a fun activity for your dog?
Why not give trick training a go? 🤩
Trick training works your dog’s body 🐕, their brain 🧠 and helps strenghten your bond 👩💼🐩🩶
It provides extra mental stimulation, speeds up the rate of learning and builds confidence.
All that while having fun! 👌
Our next 6 week course is starting on Wednesday 28th of February at 7.30pm.

✨ ‘Figure of 8 walking’ ✨
If your dog struggles to regulate their emotions (overexcitement, anxiety etc.), ‘figure of 8 walking’ 🐾 can be an excellent tool to help them relax and bring them back to a point where they can take direction again. 🧍♀️🐕
How does it work?
The regular change of direction in a figure of 8 pattern does not allow your dog to fixate on any particular trigger which might be around. It also encourages the dog to pay more attention to you as they need to track and follow your irregular route. Consequently, your dog will gradually focus more on following you and away from the trigger and the heightened emption will start to settle. 🧘♀️🐕
How to start…
In order to be able to regulate the dog in the real word using figure of 8 walking, you will need to work on your mechanics at home and in the garden.
➡️ To start have your dog on the lead and walk in a figure of 8 making sure the size of each loop is comfortable for your and your dog. At this stage you can call your dog on each turn to encourage them to follow or even use food to help them walk the pattern with you. This can be especially helpful on the loops where you are going to be turning INTO your dog (we want them to stay on the same side of us throughout the figure of 8).
➡️ Once you are both able to walk several figure of 8 in a row comfortably, reduce your speed by 50% to bring the energy down.
➡️ Once this is going well, reduce any food rewards or verbal cues to a minimum as this can often spike our dog’s energy.
➡️ Now practice at even slower pace, without any food or any verbal cues - this is the end goal!
Practice this in the house and garden first before practicing in low distraction environments on your walks.
As walking figure of 8 relies on frequent changes of direction, it is also an excellent exercise for teaching loose leash walking 👌 The dog will fall slightly behind your leg on each turn, providing multi
What a beautiful day to be out with the 🐕 ☀️
Practising duration behaviours such as sit / down on your daily walks is a great way to bring in some calmness into your walk, especially if, like ours, your dog likes to tear around most of the walk 😊
Notice that there is no repetitive ‘stay’ / ‘wait’ cues. They know to stay in their duration down until they hear their release cue ‘break’ - Milo anticipated the release cue a little but he is almost 14yo so we will forgive him 🩵
Duration sit / down is a great exercise to:
✅ Bring energy back down
✅ Grow impulse control
✅ Grow disengagement from environment - in this video you can see the dogs looking to their right as some off lead dogs run by
✅ Proofing duration in different environments and situations
✅ Growing focus on you
