EQUINE OBESITY
ARE OUR HORSES TOO FAT? 🐎⚖️🐴
Obesity in horses isn’t always considered as serious an issue amongst owners as it is, despite its many health implications.
Based on multiple surveys and studies, 30-50% of the equine population in the UK are obese and this could be as high as 70% in native ponies.
HOW MUCH DOES MY HORSE WEIGH? 🐎⚖️
Much of what we do with horses - feed and forage rations, wormer or medicine doses - relies on knowing their weight, but it isn’t always easy to accurately know what a horse weighs.
WEIGHBRIDGE: Having a mobile weighbridge that can come out to your yard can accurately weigh your horse and by having the weighbridge come to your yard also causes less stress to the horse which has been known to affect their weight reading. It is useful to get a weighbridge weight at least twice a year.
WEIGH TAPE: Whilst the exact figure is not as accurate as a weighbridge, they can allow easy and frequent tracking of weight in between having the weighbridge out to your yard to see if the horse is losing or gaining weight. For best results consistency is key, i.e ideally the same person using the same weigh tape at the same spot on the horse, on a flat surface with the horse stood square. It’s also a good idea to take an average of 3 measurements.
WHAT ABOUT BODY CONDITION SCORING (BCS)? 🐎⚖️
BCS measures the amount of fat cover on the horse, there are two scales 1-9 or 1-5, here at JP EQUESTRIAN I find that the 1-5 scale is better to use for less confusion when giving a BCS score. As Body Condition Scoring involves being hands on to feel how much fat coverage the horse has in various areas including the neck, ribs and hind quarters, it gives a better idea of how much fat the horse has on it.
WHY DOES WEIGHT MATTER? 🐎⚖️
Equine obesity has potential undesirable consequences including a higher risk (and poorer chance of recovery) of laminitis, lameness, poor performance and reduced fertility. Therefore, it is important to identify when a horse is overweight in order to put management changes in place. Obesity and abnormal fat distribution can be linked to metabolic diseases such as Equine Cushing’s Disease or Equine Metabolic Syndrome.
As equine obesity is such a widespread issue it is important to regularly assess each horse’s weight and fat cover to determine whether it is appropriate. The best way to do this is via using the weighbridge, a weigh tape and having the body condition scoring. If weight loss is needed it is always advisable that you speak to your vet for guidance on diet and management changes.
