From a teeny tiny hoglet to being released in under 12 weeks amazing teamwork Helping Hogs 🦔🦔
Fergie the last of the cow pat family released accompanied by
Joy found as a hoglet in a lay-by on route from Halifax ! They finally got their freedom 🐾🐾🐾to a wonderful location in Giggleswick 🐾🐾🐾🐾Thank you to Ruth for taking and supporting them releasing them in a wonderful location already with a great hedgehog population 🦔🦔🦔🐾🐾🐾 stay safe girls 🦔🦔
Easy to make and make a difference to our hungry 🦔
Did you know...?
Wild mostly munch on insects & grubs? So a log-pile or wild area in the garden really helps hungry 'hogs by attracting their natural food!
🪲🍂🐛
You can also offer supplementary meaty cat/dog food or cat biscuits & fresh water!

Our little hoglets Uri, Ugo and Ugene are battling lungworm, we are gutted little Uffy didn’t survive it , he went downhill fast 🦔🌈🥲 it must have been transmitted via their mommas milk ..Depending on when infected, level of infection in mum and time taken from infection with larvae to then develop to adults and produce larvae. Usually takes 3-4 weeks, so we test often so catching it in poop has identified early, treatment started and they are now starting to gain weight 🤞
We’ve never seen so much lungworm and fluke in ones so young it’s quite a battle 🦔🪱
We’ve lost Colin 🌈🦔 and Erica 🌈🦔 suddenly…. both had lungworm some we can help some we can’t 😢
Newby 🦔Dimple 288g juvenile is also battling lungworm
And little Flick 🦔 from the Earby hotspot found wandering down the road 🤷♀️🦔 Flick 228g, bit dehydrated , underweight , scratty, sometimes indicates fluke 🤷♀️ but we will test 💩 and hope 🦔🙏
It’s a difficult time but we will
Battle on 🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔 please keep looking out for our prickles in need of help 🦔🙏
🦔🦔🦔
🙏🦔
Outs and Ins 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

D 🦔 very shy 🙈 name to be decided 288g from Gargrave
Erica from Skipton 277g
Never a dull moment 🐾🐾🐾

We’ve been in need of a hoglet hug 🤗 🦔 🦔🦔🦔🦔 this week 🐾😂it’s been a week of joy and heart break 💔
These little orphan hoglets are lucky that Lorraine got to them in time, and removed all the flystrike in time. .. they are starting to make progress ..Please if you see hoglets about in the day alone don’t leave them for hours before getting them help they need help immediately 🦔🦔🦔🦔 we’ve finally named them .. meet Ugo, Ugene, Uffy, and Uri 🦔🦔🦔🦔 we think they are all male 🤗
We’ve had several sad cases come in this week firstly Xandrea seemed to be doing well but sadly and suddenly lost her battle to a high burden of fluke 🦔🌈
We had a hog brought in with a serious head injury probably caused by a strimmer, the most horrific we’ve seen . We decided we are not going to post the worst pictures of Yvette, they are too horrific, yes they made us cry for the suffering of this poor little hog 🥹 and it’s a Sunday, vets are closed … luckily a lovely vet nurse (thankyou 🙏) helped Lorraine clean and dress the wound and give some much needed pain relief we hoped we could nurse her back to health but the next morning had to make the decision it was much kinder to put this little one to sleep🌈🦔💔😭 we’ve said all we have to say on strimmers they are killers ‼️
We then get in Zeus, thankyou to Barlick Wildlife Ambulance Crew for getting him too us , but arrived in a very sorry state, he’s a bag of bones,2 emaciated, covered in ticks, missing a claw and it’s swollen and bleeding 🩸 Then we identify the parasites fluke and round worm 🪱 and it’s a huge burden.. he’s is given the maximum sub-cut fluids for his body weight which is 100mls throughout the day and he’s still not hydrated enough for us to help with the parasite burden and before we could sadly he passed by morning 🌈🦔
We then have Andrew rescued by our volunteer Sue who removes fly strike from this little hog .. cross everything for Andrew 🦔
I am going to end on a happy story , Edwin has been collected and left the building by Stella and he’s been released back to his territory in Bentham. Thank you Stella for the wonderful donation you made it will go a long way for us to help other hogs 🙏
🦔🦔🦔
First experience of biscuits it like a biscuit wrestling match rolling and self anointing 🦔🦔🦔🦔 they are so funny and cute 🥰 Helping Hogs
I love hoglets ❤️ they are so mischievous 🐾🐾 they make me smile in between the heartbreaking 💔 cases we see.
But this little dude 🦔 makes me chuckle he’s Onyx McBitey, I am monitoring him on camera because he’s not gaining weight🤷♀️ he’s eating, possibly not enough, but his nightly antics may explain why🦔😂
He was found and rescued in Cemetry Park Earby , some children were poking him and throwing coats over him 🦔🦔😬 maybe that’s where he’s got his attitude from …it’s revenge. This is the first little hoglet that has actually tried to bite me 🫣
Last night the video shows him taking revenge on yes ! His dish 😂 many times during the night, he cracks me up 🦔😂🤣
Final blow was the camera so no more footage ….
He has sadly just tested for lungworm and roundworm so treatment will start .. he will have a little fight of his own to deal with 🥲
We’ve had several incidents recently of hedgehogs 🦔 being poked prodded or used as footballs, and of course run over 🚗 these are defenceless little endangered creatures 🦔
WHY ????
🦔🦔🦔
Edwin came in from Bentham from the lovely Stella the beginning of July….
Quite an old, gentle boy, you can tell he’s quite ginger 🦔😍 weighing around 500g dehydrated and with an awful left eye wound hard to tell if the eye was ok, had taken him to the vets apart from being given an antibiotic nothing had been done to the wound 😕We gave him a warm bath and bathed his eye to soften the wound, repeated next day and managed to remove the scab yes he has an eye 👁️ the wound was still pussy, course of antibiotics helped and it started improving with regular wound care..
Unfortunately 💩💩 samples then showed fluke then lungworm and then roundworm 🔬 🦔 We treat in order that will kill a hog starting with fluke💩 he’s been such a trouper one of the gentlest hedgehogs we’ve treated ….a proper little gentleman🦔 took his meds like a pro 🦔
He’s now a handsome dude the wound has nearly healed ..just another couple roundworm treatments and he’ll be good to go home…. he’s now just over 900g we’ve popped him outside in a garden run so he gets more
Exercise and climatized before release 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
🦔🦔🦔
Good advice for any animal 😍
Its hot! 🥵
Some breeds of dogs like, Pugs and French bulldogs can find this temperature even more challenging.
If your dog struggles in hot weather, try and avoid the hottest part of the day. The temperature outside can be up to three times hotter in your car, pavements can hit uncomfortable temperatures too!
We're encouraging pet owners to consider if an appointment in the middle of the day is in the best interest of their pet 🤔 We have early morning and evening appointments for pets who would benefit from avoiding the heat 💪
It’s been a difficult week… with highs 🐾🐾🐾🐾. The releases and very lows…..
🦔🦔🦔
We have had Hoglets/juvenile’s in , after the baby season, we get the sickliest hogs many have left their mommas for numerous reasons 🦔 too early .. disturbed by dogs🦔🦔 naughty children ..
if they have wounds this time of year the flies are upon them laying eggs that look like rice🦔 if they are are not found and rescued fast then the outcome is not a happy one 🦔 …..as we’ve found ….
We had Nora in 🦔 from Clitheroe
…Not in a good state, think poss been mauled by a dog .. 231g after 20ml sub cut fluid which was given at the finders . Hole in ear and tongue swollen and jaw looked wonky but not seen it move its tongue. Floppy, No idea how long it’s been like this tho . Found in a park where lots of dogs are running free. Finder had called the vets but they weren’t very helpful 🤷♀️ Sadly Nora passed 🌈🦔
Next another little hog in from cemetery park Earby . Thankyou to the members of Barlick Wildlife Ambulance Crew for bringing. In comes a little 190g hog transferred to Settle hoglet unit named Onyx , it was rescued from some naughty boys prodding and throwing coats over it 😡 so probably no wonder it came in like a little gangster the first hoglet EVER to try bite me 🫣 re named Onyx McBitey 🦔😂
We now have another en route poor Lorraine trails back again to Settle This little one that our volunteer Sue dropped off is another little one 210g full of fly strike and fleas . Very dehydrated Lorraine’s removed most of the fly strike and hibiscrub bathed it . Having another go at the fly strike when it’s had a break. It arrives things are moving round its eyes 😬 we then spend the next two and a half hours removing live maggots from this little one , sorry if you are squeeemish but maggots are ouzing from the eyes, ears, spines it has a puncture wound under one eye which is wriggling , it’s the site of a horror movie 🫣 we flush, bathe, squirt maggots and maggots and maggots from this little hog 🦔 we call it pirate cos we think it only has one eye 🦔🏴☠️ 😭. She survives the night and seems to pick up and eats but still finding the odd 🐛 she starts to deteriorate we don’t know the internal damage …no parasites show in poop 💩 but next morning she too crosses the 🦔🌈 the only thing we take from this is she wasn’t eaten alive 😢 and we don’t recommend it’s the way to spend a Friday evening 🥹
There’s more ……A call of
a hedgehog, it doesn't have any visibly injuries, buts only small and weighs about 220g. It was led out on the floor being pecked at by jackdaws in Clitheroe in a back garden Jo to the rescue and Quill is now in our care too🦔
Sunday has been sad day….
We lost Marty 🦔 he failed to thrive and passed overnight 🌈🦔
Pirate passed away after her maggot ordeal, we are not surprised just sad 😢 🌈🦔
New arrival Robert 🦔 from Skipton full of fly strike, Had a puncture wound on his neck . His stomach and armpits were also full of fly strike as were his ears .. poor thing 😞🫣 sadly passed within the hour 🌈🦔
We’ve been fortunate to have the lovely Daisy with us for a week on work placement, nearly in her third year at veterinary training… came to us for some experience in wildlife. She’s been to visit the hoglets in Settle and been working at the hogspital in Paythorne . We wish her well in the rest of her training and has been a great help adding an extra helping hand at this busy time.
Hoping for a better start to the new week … please remember time is of the essence this time a year if you find a hog out in the day get in touch!
🦔🦔🦔
Lord Snuffles never ceases to amaze us…. We believe he decided to hibernate in July … yes summer, he is now nearly 3 years old he’s never hibernated properly, even through the winter months. This year his servant went away for a week leaving plenty biscuits but couldn’t leave his daily meat … on return he was nowhere to be seen … on further investigation he’d left his house and built himself a grass nest in the corner of his garden, we knew he was in there as he huffed at us upon finding it . For a month he didn’t come out for food or poop in his favourite place … kinda worried about him until this Week he surfaces and starts pooping and expecting food … yes he hibernated in summer 🦔🤷♀️ I think because no meat available he decided it was hibernation time 🦔😂 and let’s face it the weather has not been great …..nothing so fickle as a prickle 🦔
🦔🦔🦔
Considering we are a small, newly formed team at Helping Hogs we’ve worked hard to rescue and save our precious hoglet prickles this year 🦔🦔🦔every team member should be proud of what’s been achieved, it’s been a journey ..we have started to release all we have had in care, which has mainly been hoglets 🦔🦔🦔 they can’t all go back to where they were found because it’s either not safe or unable to do so and they need some support releasing.. After careful consideration of where they go we have said goodbye to 4 of our prickles last night 🦔🦔🦔🦔
One of our volunteers is support releasing Bluey and Dexter in Embsay 🦔🦔 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
Aspen and Venus are being supported by the lovely Reynolds family in Rathmell 🙏 🦔🦔 🐾🐾🐾🐾
More releases to come 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
….after all the hard work hand rearing many and monitoring…this is the most rewarding part seeing them venture into the big wide world 🐾🐾 stay safe prickles 🦔🦔🦔🦔
🦔🦔🦔
You may or may not have noticed we have been naming admissions in alphabetical order to help us identify who has been in longest , we are on second time around the alphabet already !
So we have newbies
Joy 🦔 180g hoglet/juvenile
Kevin adult hog from Waddington 663g 🌈🦔 sadly passed away within in hours of admission, he had a huge parasite burden 😢🌈
Leonard 🦔 juvenile from Earby
Marty 🦔 hoglet / juvenile 188g
I’d just like to say a big thank you for the monthly and one-off donations we’ve recently received too may to name but the the team are extremely grateful and the hogs send hugs 🤗 too ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏 Also to everyone who has purchased a hedgehog house or feeding station to support the wildlife on release 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
Our next post will be lots of releases 🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔
🦔🦔🦔
This is Ickle , found on a car park in Burnley rescued and brought to Clitheroe by the finder she’s tiny . Our Volunteer Paul picked her up and brought her to Paythorne then brought her on to Settle hoglet unit 🦔 she was just 117g, several ticks removed, given subcut fluids and put in the incubator to stabilise and warm her up . She sneaked a lid of puppy mousse whilst making her some special formula 🦔😬 hungry little one ❤️
Over the last few days I’ve removed over 20 ticks (now 24)from this little body , often it’s a sign of an underlying problem and definitely too many for this little one to bear. Ticks can make a hog very sick and anaemic..if removed incorrectly they can regurgitate into the hog ..10 on an adult hog is considered too many so on a hoglet it is worrying . We hope for the best , she’s gaining weight slowly.
Removing ticks properly requires experience and, to avoid harming the hedgehog, you should seek expert help at a rescue
🦔🦔🦔
Peanut, one very lucky 🍀 hoglet has joined Lucky has been released at Paythorne in Lorraine’s wonderful gardens and surrounding land🐾🐾 One of pat’s little family is joining momma cow Pat, Lucky 🦔and the wildies 🐾🐾 I am sure they’ll have a wonderful time 🦔🦔🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 in Hedgehog haven 🦔
We will be releasing many of the hoglets we’ve raised to healthy hedgehogs over the next couple of weeks will try and update as we find them homes 🐾🐾🐾🦔🐾🦔 if you are a finder we will be contacting you 🦔
🦔🦔🦔
We’ve been asked about donations, it’s not our policy to ask 🤗 but 🐾🐾🐾🐾 if you feel you would like to help we’d be extremely grateful 🙏 🐾🐾 🦔 it’s been so busy…….

This is Harry (update Harriet 🫣)she’s giving me the run around 🦔🐾🐾🐾 came in to rescue at just 144g and started to gain weight then decided she didn’t want to eat 🐾🐾 we tried buddying her up with little Ickle, but didn’t work out 🦔🦔❤️ Ickle didn’t want to snuggle 🤗 he sleeps during the day, then comes to life at night but instead of eating she runs riot. 🦔🐾🐾🐾🐾
We’ve gone back to shringe feeding this little mischief and hope it inspires her to eat… it often happens with hoglets just hoping there is nothing underlying but we are checking 💩
Cross everything for this little dude 🦔
🦔🦔🦔
Our latest hoglets are pretty well travelled one from a car park in Burnley the other on the way back from Halifax 🦔🦔🦔 some hoglets were found too late, just too poorly and didn’t make it 🥲 it really is important to get them to us as soon as seen they are seen out in the day 🐾🐾🐾 under 250g their chances to survive without their momma are slim🦔🦔
They have gone over the rainbow bridge

Edwin’s eye is now visible his wound is healing although battling fluke and lungworm. We have everything crossed 🤞
Lord Snuffles really does appear to have hibernated 🤷♀️
It’s been hard turning away hogs in need whilst we’ve been caring for so many, but we’ve still managed to advise on how to get help 🦔
🦔🦔🦔
A hedgehog out in the day is sometimes ok 🦔🦔🐾🐾 worth noting 🦔
If you have little visitors 🦔🦔 to your garden or want to encourage hedgehogs 🦔🦔🦔 providing them with shelter and food is the best way …….its been such a wet start to the year a nice warm nest can mean so much to a nesting hedgehog …….we have developed these hog houses to help with releasing so many hedgehogs that have been in care 🐾 🐾
Our Hog houses are now back in stock ……..we’d virtually sold out we’ve been busy making more hedgehog houses from pallets donated. We have only one left in the all green, we also have one matching two entrance feeding station 🦔🦔🦔🦔
We have several houses in orange with green roof and one matching feeding station
A lovely little sheltered porch area, to keep out the weather, an alley way seperate to the bedding area to discourage other species from using the house.
And a wonderfully sized bedding area, that takes a fantastic amount of bedding.
The beauty of these hedgehog houses, is not only are they made from mostly recycled items, but they are designed for bigger hedgehogs.
Many houses on the market are just too small and don’t stand up the the typical British weather!
They are only £35 each! Every penny goes to the care of hedgehogs 🦔
If you would like to place an order please get in touch either message or email us at [email protected] to arrange payment and collection, from either Paythorne or Settle
🦔🦔🦔
Update ⚽️🏴 now I wish I hadn’t 🤷♀️🫤

This is lungworm that we’ve found today in a newly admitted hog 🦔 if you imagine a point of a cocktail stick this is the amount of the burden in that tiny amount of 💩, this hog also has roundworm to so her prognosis isn’t great she’s going to have a fight on her 🐾 paws 🐾 🥲 Sometimes to look at a hedgehog 🦔 you think they are ok but this is what you cannot see and the longer you leave them without treatment the shorter their life will be 🦔 seek help ! please ! Microscopy and looking at poo samples is a significant part of our routine at Helping Hogs, without collecting samples and spending literally hours looking at poo we wouldn't be successful in identifying the internal parasites that the hedgehogs have. Without the correct identification, the right treatment method can't be administered and could cause more unnecessary suffering. Every hedgehog admitted is stabilised, a sample taken (some take longer to arrive than others!) and then an individual care plan is created and adhered to. These are the fundamentals of caring for any animal not just hedgehogs. Hedgehogs are a high-maintenance little animal and need specialist care, please ensure that you do the right thing when you find one that needs help and pass it on to a rescue. Please don't keep it a few days, get them help immediately, it really is the difference between life and death. #helpinghogs 🦔🦔🦔 #microscopy #paracites
A momma hedgehogs work is never done 🦔❤️ As you may now I never tire of watching hedgehogs cleaning out their beds 🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔
I never get tired of watching hedgehogs gathering nesting material 🦔🦔 it’s that time of year 🦔 not only females nest males do too 🍁🍂🍁🍂🌿☘️🍀🍃🍂🍁🌾 #helpinghogs🦔🦔🦔
I’m sure you know the tinker Wurley 🦔 the high maintenance hog that is on his third visit back since his release. He’s doing well out in the garden clearly feeling a lot better after treatment 🐾🐾he’s been trashing his run the last few nights 🎉 I had words yesterday 😁 this morning 🦔 caught on camera tidying up the mess 🤣🦔 before I go out 🙈 #helpinghogs🦔🦔🦔 #messyhog
You forget that when hoglets are in care with you for such a long time that when they step on grass for the first time it’s such a new experience 🦔 🐾🐾🐾 it’s lovely to watch as they tread slowly 🐾🐾🦔 around it must be a lovely sensation after being in cages for a while. This is how T-Pau reacted… she’s self anointing to all the different smells of the soil and grass and the rain. She’s on camera all night like an excited child 🦔 🐾🐾 i. Her new environment…so hopefully getting plenty exercise and her spines will grow as fast as the grass does 😂🦔 #helpinghogs🦔🦔🦔
Meet Glen Hoggle 🦔🐾🐾😂 We have some very skilled hedgehogs in training 🥎🦔 our volunteer Elaine has been putting her released wildies through their paces with some great dribbling skills 🥎🦔 saved poor Terrace 🦔 being headed out the way 😂🤣🥎 Amazing footage 🤣🤣🦔🥎 #helpinghogs🦔🦔🦔
And finally …. The release of our little chocolate box ,Twix she’s been in care since she was born (momma Shirley and siblings Curley, Wurley, and Rolo) she’s had one hell of a journey. 🐾🐾 Twix has had everything thrown at her ..lung worm 🪱 roundworm, ringworm , fluke , she then hibernated in rescue mid November 2023 through to 7 March 2024 when she lost quite a bit of weight. She was failing a little to thrive so we decided to move her into a supported garden to try to change things around and stimulate her eating 🦔 seems to have worked, when born in care, as a juevenille they don’t have their momma hog to teach them the ways of the world 🦔🐾 like in the wild… so we've got her up to her release weight and slow released.... with a break in the weather we gave her the option to come and go and opened up the door 🐾🐾🐾🦔she went last night 🦔🐾🐾🐾🐾 but this morning found she had trashed the camera and got herself back in bed 🦔😂❤️ her run will remain open until she gets the confidence to go 🐾🐾🦔 stay safe beautiful Twix ...go find Curley🦔 Not being able to be released where her mum was found It's important she was released where she can be monitored and support fed with the option of her ready made B&B 🦔🙂🐾🐾🐾🐾🦔 #helpinghogs🦔🦔
Poop alert 💩💩💩💩 Twix awoke from a long hibernation a little worryingly underweight and has been struggling to gain weight 🦔 we decided to change her environment into the garden she’s in a house with long run and she’s finally found her appetite 🦔 she’s been in care since a baby (the last of the chocolate boxes) we really need to get her released if she keeps up the gain 🐾 🐾 it will be hopefully very soon 🦔 🐾🐾 Well thank you Twix 🦔 now you may understand why hedgehogs can loose 60g overnight 💩💩🦔 bet she felt better after that 🥴 Hope you’re enjoying your chocolate Easter eggs 🥚 💩🤣 #helpinghogs🦔🦔🦔
T-Pau receiving her beauty treatment 🦔❤️ Our little walnut steam train.......🦔 T-Pau one of the smallest hoglets we've had in care at 62g she came in last September full of ticks, flees , with one eye closed... a sorry little sight ..she also holds the award for huffiest little hoglet too ❤️🦔....shes had a very long long journey 🐾🐾 developed a bad case of ringworm, been treated, but the skin damage the ringworm caused meant she has lost nearly all her spines and sadly the regrowth is very slow ...shes doing great she is up to 832g, normally a release weight, but she would be too vulnerable to survive with no protection 🦔 shes kind of a cross between a walnut and a potato... but one of the lovliest, sweetest hogs ❤️🦔..... She has been moved in a quieter environment to receive a frequent beaty treatment aimed at helping her skin, which involves brushing her with warm coconut oil...she loves it ❤️🦔she turns to purring rather than steam....unless you touch my head 🦔❤️ ........please grow spines ! we've had to manicure her claws too 🐾 hedgehogs in long term care don't get the opportunity to dig so their claws can grow quite long 🦔🐾 I have considered knitting her a little jumper ...what do you think! 🦔🦔🦔 #helpinghogs🦔🦔🦔
Did you know? the hedgehogs pelvis bones rotating down that give this appearance - The pelvis tips dramatically when they’re having a scratch, so they can get their leg out from under the coat of prickles. The prickles are edged with a muscle (the one that draws in to ball up) and it hooks over the pelvis, so by rotating the pelvis the spine area goes way up, and the leg can get out and round to itch. Flipping fascinating - but that’s what makes the ‘lump’ that appears when they do this 🙂
Today’s Valentine’s day so share the love with the hedgehogs in our care and for all those to come. Just £2 a month goes a long way to helping support these amazing little prickly creatures. Ways you can support them include: 🩵 Donorbox for regular monthly donations at an amount to suit your pocket 💕 https://donorbox.org/helping-hogs-rescue 💚 Or BACs for one off wonderful donations ❤️ Helping Hogs Lloyds bank 30-99-50 13947463 #helpinghogs 🦔🦔🦔
Morning all! Ward round time, six still with us, 3 fast asleep, 3 active, 1 of which just waiting for a better spell of weather so she can head back home. Welcome to Paul and June-Mary our latest volunteers to join the team. We’re still open to more helpers on weekday mornings, so we’ll be ready for the upcoming influx of hedgehogs waking up and baby season which will be upon us fast than you think. If you’d like to offer a few hours a week (weekdays and Saturday morning is whats needed at the moment) please email [email protected] #helpinghogs 🦔🦔🦔
As promised, her she is, the infamous T-Pau, our little steam train. She is the most adorable little hedgehog, weighing in at over 700grms she is the huffiest hedgehog I’ve ever come across, she has such character. What a loveable little rogue she is 🦔🚂 We just need those spines to get growing again now 🥰 #helpinghogs 🦔🦔🦔
