A quick happy post..

Yeah 🐾 🐾🐾🐾🦔 we’ve managed to say goodbye to Sugar before Christmas, he came in out in the day in November and was very poorly , a shy little hog with a bad case of lungworm, needing days in the nebuliser, he did so well surviving all three parasites 🙏
We’ve only released him as he is going home to our volunteers Paul and June-Mary in Clitheroe, he has a warm cosy house and support feeding untill he hopefully hibernates there. At a whopping 950g it’s safe to say he loves his biscuits and built up his body fat 🐾🐾🐾🐾
Stay safe Sugar hopefully you may find Lucy in the Spring 😜

These little guys would like to
Wish all our followers, volunteers and all who have donated to their care throughout the year 🦔🦔🦔🤗
We couldn’t have saved and released so many hedgehogs without help 🐾🐾it’s been a tough ending to the year but we have done incredibly well to get all our Hogspital residents back to the wild where they should be, many are already snuggled up in our specially made houses that folk have bought from us 🙏.

The few remaining wonky hogs will spend Christmas 🎄 in care , they are still too small to hibernate so need keeping warm to stop them 😴 with the exception of Sugar who is big enough but having just come off meds needs to keep warm a while longer 🦔 we are still hoping if the weather is kind he can return to his supported garden and go to bed there 🦔 and of course Lord Snuffles who has woke up From hibernation and thinks it’s spring 🦔🐾🤣

So we will taking a little break from posting, we will be about for 🦔 emergencies 🐾🐾🐾 so Happy Christmas 🎅🏼 🎄 Hope Santa comes 🎁
We still have a stock of hedgehog homes if you need a gift for that someone who has everything 🤗 and would love to add one to their garden 🪴

Someone thinks it’s spring 🫣🦔…….Lord snuffles has been up
And about for three days now 🐾🐾🐾🐾💩💩💩 he is so fickle .. he hibernates for a month in June, gets back up and about until end of September then hibernates again October and most of November 🤷 have to admit the weather is pretty crazy it’s no wonder it must be confusing 🦔

I am at least relieved to see him survive and he looks great .. he has been awaiting his food delivery every evening and morning in his feeding station .. his belly must be empty 🦔❤️🐾

Perhaps he’s going to celebrate Christmas with us 🎅🏼

Just look at that nest — Andy has been practicing the art of spinning his paper and meadow hay 🦔 he’s always snug and warm in his nest despite the freezing weather 🐾🐾this morning he’s 639g 🤗 getting there Andy let’s hope we can get you back out wild before hibernation 🦔🐾🐾🐾🐾

He’s grown into such a handsome sweetheart with fur 😊 he’s the one who had very delayed fur growth and lost his Mohican ❤️

Sweet as Sugar 🐾🐾🐾🦔

Sugar has been pretty sick he’s the one that has been having lots of sessions in the nebuliser due to the high burden of lungworm 🪱 🐾🐾🐾 this poor little one has everything thrown at him he’s had every parasite going 🔬 🙈 but he’s still battling and up to 495g which is amazing 🐾🐾🐾 keep going Sugar 🦔🐾🐾

Update : We love questions about 🦔p**p 💩 🤭 we see enough of it 🦔💩we’ve been asked if they p**p in hibernation ? 🤔I’m not an expert but this is what I know 🤔
🐾🐾 whilst green p**p can be a sign of parasites it also can be a pre-or post-hibernation gut purge.

Green p**p is not uncommon in hedgehogs, especially before and after hibernation:
🐾Before hibernation: Green p**p can occur when a hedgehog's digestive system shuts down and bile isn't working properly.
🐾After hibernation: Green p**p can occur after a hedgehog comes out of hibernation.🐾🐾🦔
Sometimes they only semi-hibernate so nip in and out for food water and 💩 😁

As temperatures plummet, hedgehogs are more likely to start hibernating. Some will already have been hibernating for a while. …..like Lord Snuffles 🦔

Hibernation is thought to be triggered by a prolonged fall in temperature, reduced daylight hours and lack of food, but while It is commonly thought that hedgehogs hibernate from autumn through the winter until the spring, this is not so anymore ! Hedgehogs do not have the luxury of calendars; they react to the environment around them hedgehogs build themselves a hibernacula, a secure nest in which they spin the bedding materials to make a weather resistant and well insulated shelter…They are masterpieces of natural engineering.🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
The hedgehog may rouse periodically (and use a great deal of energy doing so ) so why we suggest continued feeding of kitten biscuits throughout 🐾🐾 the year…please don’t forget to break ice in water bowls too!

Hibernation is a perilous business because it isn't just a matter of snoozing away the winter months. It is a process whereby a warm blooded mammal almost becomes a cold blooded one. They undergo massive physiological changes to enable this fascinating transformation. They don't always get it right and there are no guarantees that they will be successful and survive.
Bodily functions remain normal, keeping the brain and other organs unconsciously active.

🐾🐾 A normal heartbeat for a hedgehog can be up to 280 beats per minute but this may drop to a barely detectable 20. Its body temperature which is normally 35c drops to 5 degrees and it may only take a breath every few minutes. Some are reported to be apnoeic for up to an hour. A fall that would kill most other mammals.

🐾 If you find a hedgehog that is hibernating in a shed, garage or outbuilding, leave it if you can provide constant access to the outdoors (hibernation is not always continuous). If not (and the hedgehog is now trapped), then you can relocate it into a sturdy wooden hedgehog box filled with plenty of dust extracted barley straw. Place your box in a sheltered area of the garden. Don't relocate it to an entirely new area.🐾🐾🐾🦔

🐾 🐾How do you know if a hedgehog is hibernating and not dead? A hibernating hedgehog will be fully curled in a tight ball with its head not visible…An uncurled hedgehog is not hibernating. It might be dead or it could be alive but very sick and collapsed. Hedgehogs don't tend to die in a tightly curled ball. If you gently touch a hibernating hedgehog, it should 'ripple' slightly.🦔🦔

So don’t worry if you see a reasonably sized hedgehog out on a winter’s night just make sure you leave it some kitten cat biscuits and a drink of water 🐾🐾 you just may save its life 🦔

!Think HEDGEHOG whenever you are gardening at any time of year!

Meet Tallulah.. the latest inmate…349g , out in the day in Barnoldswick. Lungworm in sample but suspect more going on . Not unduly dehydrated . In incubator and has made herself comfortable . All usual care commenced 🙏

Further sampling has surprise surprise found all three parasites 🫣 there is just not let up 🪱🪱🥴

We are all very happy that we have managed to release all hedgehogs at Paythorne 🦔 at release weight, whilst mild and before the snow appeared and avoid over wintering🐾🐾🐾🦔 the last to go was Willow several nights ago she was lucky to be released at Paythorne in a well stuffed house , to stay under the watchful eye of Lorraine, she becomes a wild resident 🦔🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 at Helping Hogs 🐾🐾
Stay safe Willow ❤️🦔

Lungworm (Crenosoma striatum)

Lungworm is massively common this year, probably due to a wet cold spring meaning very few insects so hedgehogs have had to eat many more slugs and snails and have caught lungworm 🪱 common name used to describe infestation of the lungs with parasitic worms.

The signs of disease in hedgehogs vary according to the severity of the parasite infestation in the lungs and whether or not there is any secondary bacterial infection present. Signs of lungworm, therefore, can range from no disease to snuffles, wheezes, nasal discharge, increased respiratory effort (sometimes with rattling breathing), cough, weight loss, reduced appetite, weakness, reduced activity.

The additional stress of the breathing problems does cause heart failure so it is important to ease breathing. …..So Sometimes we need to use a nebuliser which we have adapted with a box to place in the hedgehog 🦔 the vapour helps it breathe with a 15-20minute session several times a day ..this year has been a particularly bad year for lungworm😕

Sugar is struggling with his breathing so is having daily sessions …he has a very large burden of lungworm we are hoping nebuliser will help till the meds kick in 🙏

One of our nebulisers has just packed in so now we have no spare …. If there is anyone who has one they no longer use we’d be happy to try and put it to use at the rescue 🙏🦔

One more out one more in ……. Out goes 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
X-girl came in from Barnoldswick at 321g and now left us at 722g gone to Rendezvous with Barney 🦔 in the park I’m told 🤷🦔

We are working hard to get all those 🦔 at target weight released, all to supported gardens, we hate keeping them from their wild life and having to over winter them 🐾🐾🦔stay safe X-girl work those super powers ⚡️

In 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 comes Sugar a little sweetie from Paul and June Mary in Clitheroe out in the day in their garden, we’ve already diagnosed a high burden of lung worm and Capillaria. We will stabilise and hope 🙏

Now a massive shout out Lainey & Stuey, Jim the MD of UK LTD and for the donation of pallets . It will keep the lads busy making more hog, bug houses and feeding stations, which help us fund the rescue . 🦔🦔 The sale of these give the prickles we save a safe place to sleep snuggly over the winter . Thank you 🙏 we’ve nearly sold out again so a very welcome delivery 🏠 🦔🦔🦔
