Finishing off Friday with the darkness firmly set in, with the head torches getting their use summer seems a long time ago! And one of the last horses of the day where keeping it simple with basic and fundamental forging / shoemaking skills can be a real asset even on some of the most challenging conformed horse’s

Make and fit practice run today on a mare with chronic osteoarthritis in the hock, presenting with a loss of flexion and stood under posture we decided to make a pair of graduated straight bars with set down bar to accommodate the caudal aspect of the frog, although a low cranial swing phase was apparent there was no notable dorsal toe squaring and a toe clip with no upturn or set toe was used as to not restrict the hoof mechanism and add security to the attachment during the heavy impact phase of the stride. Posture was dramatically improved post shoeing with noticeable fluency in the dynamic aspect

Friday morning at the vets helping to create a package for ongoing care post surgery. Horse being found to have Septic Pedal Osteitis at the dorsal distal margin, a condition that may result from concurrent hoof infections or direct pe*******on injury. After surgical intervention debriding the affected area we applied a hospital plate to create protection and provide a way of holding dressings in the surgical site. Frog support and solar packing was also given to the contralateral foot to negate any problems that may possibly arise from overloading / weight baring. A very beneficial shoe when needed, that can easily be evidenced of use going back into the 1800’s by the likes of Lungwitz and Dollar as pictured in his first edition ‘A handbook of horseshoeing’ 1898. Thanks for the great work and care from the Veterinary Hospital

A case presented today with short term loss of performance and sporadic lameness over the last several weeks, after an assessment of the equine and search of the foot we found a deep fissure in the central sulcus of the frog that was invaded with a localized bacterial infection and highly sensitive. Being an unplanned case we opted to fabricate a bar shoe with a standard stock horseshoe and metal insert due to time allocated. The bar shoe along with correct trimming that creates a suitable plane, level landing and correct movement of the hoof mechanism, will ensure stability in the caudal region of the foot negating any independent shearing movement of each heel allowing the fissure to heal. Fabricating the shoe also allowed us to place the bar slightly dorsal to a standard straightbar to ensure an accumulation of debris doesn't occur in the affected area and for the owner access to apply a topical treatment to help with the bacterial invasion. Although a largley strong hoof capsule we believe the environment (a very wet and soggy cornwall) was a large contributor to this.

Horse presenting today with broken hind feet around the bearing border due to the hard ground conditions and stamping at flies. The affected horn was mainly in the location of where a traditional 1/4 clips would fit therefore rendering them unsuitable to achieve a secure and safe position. Although modern materials are a great asset and could have been used traditional forging skill is still a great asset to learn and in this situation was a simple but effective shoeing plan!

Finishing the week with a bit of problem solving! Thoroughbred presenting with a hind lateral heel avulsion and solar pe*******on wound with subsequent sub solar infection. Due to weather conditions traditional fixing methods weren't an option and needed to keep the applied package as light as I could so come up with a whip across lateral extension bar shoe with hospital plate from aluminium and glued on with methyl methacrylate. This allowed protection to site and me to float the affected heel. Owner will continue to apply topical treatment and dressing under the removable hospital plate! Thanks to for their swift and valuable help on the case!
