🌟Socialisation🌟
So, following on from yesterdays post lets talk a little bit more about socialisation, what it is and what it isn't.
Puppy socialisation refers to the process of exposing young puppies to a wide variety of experiences, people, animals, and environments in order to help them develop into well-adjusted and confident adult dogs. It is a critical stage in a puppy's development and typically takes place between the ages of 3 to 14 weeks, although socialisation can and should continue throughout the dog's life.
Here are some important aspects and benefits of puppy socialisation:
Exposure to Different Environments: Introducing your puppy to different environments such as parks, streets, car rides, and various indoor and outdoor settings helps them become familiar and comfortable in different surroundings.
Positive Interaction with People: Socialising puppies with different types of people, including children, adults, and seniors, helps them build positive associations and learn appropriate behavior when interacting with humans. They don't even need to directly interact with all people, observation is enough, especially if they are unsure.
Meeting Other Animals: Allowing puppies to interact with other friendly dogs, as well as exposing them to other animals like cats, birds, and small animals, helps them learn how to communicate and interact with different species. Make sure you monitor these interactions very carefully and neither your puppy or the other animal is at risk.
Noise Desensitisation: Introducing puppies to common household and environmental noises, such as vacuum cleaners, doorbells, sirens, and thunder, helps them become less fearful and more confident when encountering loud or unexpected sounds.
Positive Reinforcement Training: Basic obedience training during the socialisation period helps puppies learn basic commands, manners, and boundaries. Reward-based training methods using treats, praise, and play are effective in teachin
🌟Polite Puppies & Socialisation🌟
Here’s what a polite puppy greeting looks like, puppies do not need to jump all over each other, the earlier they learn how to greet each other politely the better. This will keep them out of trouble with adult dogs to!
Cooper (the smaller pup) was fairly nervous when he first came to Puppy Classes, he’s slowly been growing in confidence over the weeks and observing the others from a distance. We have not forced him to interact with anyone, humans or puppies, if he didn’t want to. This interaction was initiated by Cooper and you can see how Mae is super respectful of him to and offers a beautiful play bow before I rudely interrupt them by filming 🙈😂
It is not down to any other dog to “tell your puppy off” it is our job to show them how to be polite around other dogs. Being told off by another dog is generally not a healthy experience for a puppy, where possible all interactions should be positive for both the puppy and the other dog involved 🐾
Socialisation is not about letting your puppy go nuts playing with every dog they meet, trust me when I say this will just cause you more problems down the line! It’s about teaching them how to successfully navigate the human world they live in and as Cooper is perfect proof of, observation of that world is so powerful 🥰 they don’t have to directly interact with everything to learn 😊
I love being sent videos like this by my amazing Puppy students 🥰
This is Mae, absolutely smashing her loose lead walking, focus and engagement at a garden centre! She’s only 16 weeks but my goodness she’s super special 😇♥️
I’m so incredibly lucky to be a part of her journey to becoming an assistance dog, her and her mum Laura have an amazing partnership already 🥰
