Dear Members,
The BVZS conference will take place at Conference Aston from 22nd-24th November 2024. All delegates will be welcome across all streams. The final program will depend upon abstract on submissions, but it is expected that content will be organised as follows:
• Zoo health and a parallel nursing focused stream on the Friday (22nd)
• Wildlife health and a parallel zoo/exotic pets (NTCAs) stream on the Saturday (23rd)
• Exotic pets (NTCAs) and a parallel student stream on the Sunday (24th)
Submissions of abstracts for the conference are invited on all aspects of exotic pet (non-traditional companion animal), free-ranging wildlife, and zoo animal health, their relevant nursing and related disciplines.
This year we plan to continue expanding our conference content
submissions based on last year’s overwhelmingly positive feedback, and request content on the following:
• Original research/ case reports: allocated 15 minutes (12 minutes plus questions).
• Posters: to be displayed throughout the conference, with designated poster sessions. Please note that posters will need to be available at the venue by first coffee break on the Friday morning and not removed until the Sunday lunchtime.
• Round table discussions: 30-45 mins discussions on topics to get the room talking with audience participation encouraged
• Master classes: 30-45min talks on specific topics (across all stress, NTCA, wildlife, zoo, student, nursing) to provide a general overview on a focused topic. Please note there are no practical facilities at the venue so master classes must be theory only.
Abstracts should be submitted following BVZS Guidelines (available here:
https://bvzs.co.uk/conferences/conference-2024/).
Abstracts not correctly formatted will not be accepted.
All abstracts, prior to assessment will be blinded to the assessors.

Abstracts must be submitted by email no later than Midnight on Friday 14th June 2024. Submissions should be sent to: [email protected]
Please state talk, poster, round-table or master class in your covering email and if you give permission for presentation slides to be shared and/ or recorded.

Those asked to present will be required to submit a short biography by 5th August 2024, as well as registering for the conference by the end of August (a small presenter discount will be given).

As we metioned in our earlier post, blood testing can make up part of routine health screening in birds, both for biochemical, haematological and infectious disease testing. In healthy birds 1ml of bloods per 100g of bird can be sampled, in sick individuals this should be halved. We would advise blood sampling is performed under general anaesthesia, rather than being performed consciously, to avoid stress, and to prevent haematoma formation. The blood lost in any haematoma must be taken into account when considering the volume to be obtained. This video is one of many free instructional videos we have available via our website www.justexotics.co.uk
One of the most commonly viewed views from our library is how to intubate a rabbit! A vital skill to have when anaesthetising these indivduals for their castration or spay. check out www.justexotics.co.uk for more free content
