Equine behaviour

Is your horse needle shy? Does your horse barge and not stand still? Do you struggle to administer wormers to your horse?

How can we all help make sure your horse has a positive, peaceful appointment with the vet?

We have some patients who are clearly very nervous or frightful of the concept of “the vet”. It may be they have had a bad experience in the past, they may be inexperienced full stop. Veterinary surgeon and behaviourist Gemma Pearson from The Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies has made and shared some video’s demonstrating how you can make the experience less stressful for your horse (and you!) and ultimately safer for everyone involved. There are several videos which you can find on this link
https://www.beva.org.uk/Horse-Owners

Despite the name of the videos (Don't break your vet) this doesn’t just apply to the vet, it applies to farriers, foot trimmers, physiotherapists and you as an owner too!

I would strongly urge anyone who thinks they may be in this boat to take a look.

Lindsay has been doing some short positive experience sessions with one patient who was very frightful of being held for the vet and who is ultimately needle shy. We are already seeing a huge improvement in a relatively short period of time.

If you have any questions or wish to speak with us regarding any of this please get in touch.

I think its fair to say we all just want the stress taken out of appointments. Life is stressful enough so let’s try to reduce the stress on your horse.

Advice and guidance to help horse owners keep their owners healthy

We know the importance of communication and being able to freely have direct contact with your vet. We love the amount of communication we have with you all! However there are so many channels and platforms by which we can all communicate that we want to make sure nothing gets missed.

*The way to contact us about routine non urgent things is via email [email protected]

*If you are concerned about your horse, and think he or she may be unwell that's a phone call straight away to the practice phone number 07880355105 📲

* Out of hours the practice number diverts to the vet on call 🚑 Whilst we all appreciate that it is almost always Lindsay on call there are times coming up where we have some excellent hand picked locum equine Veterinary Surgeons who will be taking the reins so to speak! So call the practice phone number 07880 355 105 📲

*If in discussion with the vet a photo or video is deemed helpful for you to send over then please do that via the Highland Equine Vets page on messenger or by email to [email protected]

We know many people send WhatsApp messages directly to Lindsay on the practice phone number - however please note this does not divert. And going forwards will not be picked up out of hours.

Thanks for your help with this!

*Do we make our horses fit into our schedules or do you fit your schedule around your horse's?*

My horses all live out, they have shelter but they live out. Last night was pretty challenging weather; it was raining heavy and winds were high. So safe to say my horses are tired today, more tired than they normally would be. The sun is out so they have had their rugs off.

Im going to make a confession. I wanted to ride today. I really wanted to ride. It's a beautiful day, the sun is out. Riding was written in to "my" schedule for today. I had to stop. I had to pull back. I had to read the situation. My horses are tired.

So instead of riding, I groomed them, I spent time with them. I was just there with them in their paddocks. And to be honest I think I got just as much out of that than I personally would have done going for a ride.

*Edit. We are so heart warmed to read your lovely comments about Georgia! And I'm sure Georgia herself is too. Thanks to everyone for their support and we really do hope to see some of you for a drink on the 28th!*

We are saddened to be saying goodbye to Georgia at the end of February. Georgia is leaving us to head back down to Yorkshire to be closer to her family (including her dog Luna!).

We would like to thank Georgia for her hardwork and care of our Highland Equine Vet patients. We wish Georgia good luck for the rest of her career.

We are planning to have drinks at McGregors in Inverness at 7pm on Friday 28th February to wish Georgia well. Should anyone want to come along please do!

I know I’m not the only one, I’m not alone!🥶

I’ve seen lots of snowed filled images on Facebook with captions such as “I love my horses; I love my horses!”🐎❤️

This deep wintery spell is tough going on all of us. 🥶It really reached new limits over night last night. When I got home from calls last night it was -11 degrees. And when I go up with morning it was -10 degrees. I dread to think what temp it reached through the night...

Obviously, it is so important to provide the basics for our horses shelter, clean, fresh water, forage and feed. In this weather it can feel like you’re having to break ice on water buckets continuously🪣.Horses can be reluctant to drink such cold water in weather like this and this can lead to colic, in particular impaction colic.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of bran mashes, I like to make them very watery and with warm water. It’s a great way of getting fluid and fibre into our horses. And my horses love bran mashes!

Picture of 2 of my little herd waiting patiently for a bran mash feed!

I've thought about writing this post for a while now... It's about time I put it up!

We work hard to try to get your horses fit and well, and back up to what you both enjoy doing. But who keeps us on the roads and able to do our jobs?

There are some important people in the background who keep us and our vehicles on the roads and able to do our job. A genuinely well deserved thank you to -

⭐️ Worming ⭐️

So it's that time of year where us horse/pony/donkey owners are starting to think about worming!
Worming can often be a confusing aspect of horse care however lets try and simplify it
Ideally -
🔬 4 f***l worm egg counts per year

🟢Springtime (March-June) - Tapeworm test via Saliva or blood test

🟢Autumn Time (September - December) - Tapeworm test via saliva or blood test

🟢Autumn/Winter (Optimum time September - December) Small Redworm blood test -This test can be done outwith optimum time although worming history is required

To help...... we have an Autumn offer

FWEC & Tapeworm saliva test kit - £24.00
Should you wish to take advantage of our Autumn offer please email
📧 [email protected] to arrange collection/drop off

*Prescriptions*

If your horse is prescribed a medication long term then we will advise you of when we need to carry out a prescription check up, this may involve a blood sample, depending on the medication your horse is on.

Look out for communications from ourselves if your horse is on a long term medication. Don't worry we will guide you through this.

The benefits -
*You don't run out of medication
*You're horse is checked to ensure the dose is correct
* Hopefully takes a weight off your shoulders!

Our Wednesday drop in clinic days are a great way for us to manage the prescriptions.

Please allow 4 working days for us to process prescriptions . All you need to do is drop us an email to [email protected]

We are aware that some of the online pharmacies are experiencing large delays in processing prescriptions - so rest assured we will do our best to process the prescriptions promptly from our end!*
