Equine behaviour
Is your horse needle shy? Does your horse barge and not stand still? Do you struggle to administer wormers to your horse?
How can we all help make sure your horse has a positive, peaceful appointment with the vet?
We have some patients who are clearly very nervous or frightful of the concept of “the vet”. It may be they have had a bad experience in the past, they may be inexperienced full stop. Veterinary surgeon and behaviourist Gemma Pearson from The Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies has made and shared some video’s demonstrating how you can make the experience less stressful for your horse (and you!) and ultimately safer for everyone involved. There are several videos which you can find on this link
https://www.beva.org.uk/Horse-Owners
Despite the name of the videos (Don't break your vet) this doesn’t just apply to the vet, it applies to farriers, foot trimmers, physiotherapists and you as an owner too!
I would strongly urge anyone who thinks they may be in this boat to take a look.
Lindsay has been doing some short positive experience sessions with one patient who was very frightful of being held for the vet and who is ultimately needle shy. We are already seeing a huge improvement in a relatively short period of time.
If you have any questions or wish to speak with us regarding any of this please get in touch.
I think its fair to say we all just want the stress taken out of appointments. Life is stressful enough so let’s try to reduce the stress on your horse.
