25/07/2024

In light of recent events within the equestrian world, I have been thinking long and hard about how I feel, and whether or not to comment on the matter. I usually avoid posting about these things on facebook, or even discussing them with clients, but I would like to take this opportunity to make a different, but related point. I do not wish to join the witch hunt against Charlotte โ€“ there has been plenty of this already, however after lots of mixed emotions, I think the biggest thing I am feeling at the moment is an overwhelming sense of sadness โ€“ is this really what the equestrian world is? Is this what it takes to be successful? And what is success?

I think we should all take a moment to reflect on what has happened and really consider why we own and ride horses in the first place. The number of times I have read or heard people say โ€œIโ€™ve seen worseโ€, or words to this extent is saddening, in part because it is so true. I too have seen worse, but why should that even be a relevant point in this matter? Why are we accepting worse to begin with? There are so many awful things going on in the world โ€“ just because one thing may seem worse than another, does that mean we just accept the smaller problems, turning a blind eye and moving on with our lives?

This post is not about this incident in particular, but about the attitudes within our industry in general. WE MUST DO BETTER! And that includes myself. Our horses do not owe us anything. They did not ask to be bred, or purchased for whatever job we have decided they should do. I do believe that many horses out there genuinely love their work, but if they are not cooperating one day, whether that be due to a genuine problem we have missed (or chosen to ignore), or because they are confused, or just not feeling it, why is this so unacceptable? Because we have spent money to be there? That was our choice, not theirs, and whilst I appreciate how frustrating it can be (trust me, Iโ€™ve been there!), force should never be the answer. Yes we are all human โ€“ we make mistakes, we let our emotions get the better of us and sometimes we may act unfavourably in ways we later regret, but we must acknowledge this and make a conscious effort to do better.

Where do we draw the line? At what point when we are cranking up nosebands, changing into a stronger bit or smacking horses for refusing a fence, do we stop and look in the mirror? There are countless practices happening all over the world every day that we could list, from horrific and intentional abuse to mistreatment that comes about through genuine ignorance and lack of knowledge/education. Everyone will have a different opinion on which issues pose a greater problem within the industry, but at the end of the day we have to start somewhere. In my personal opinion, that should be with each and every person within the equestrian world taking a step back and thinking about how we can do better for our horses.

Perhaps this is a naรฏve opinion to take, but I choose to believe we can still maintain a harmonious relationship with our horses whilst achieving our goals, even if the process takes a little longer. I would also like to clarify that when I talk about using force, I am referring to training and performance. I appreciate that these are big, strong animals, and safety should always be a priority, but if we are continuously relying on distasteful methods in the name of safety, then something has gone wrong and needs to be addressed with correct training and/or medical investigation.

โ—๏ธPLEASE READโ—๏ธ
PHOTO IS MISINFORMATION

There is currently a post going around with completely inaccurate advice on what to do if your dog overheats. The information is not only wrong, but extremely dangerous and could potentially result in many animals losing their lives if the post is continued to be shared. Please report this post if you do come across it (screenshots below), and do not share or follow their advice.

If your dog does overheat, cooling them quickly is very important. Misinformation around using luke-warm water, or only cooling certain areas are based on old-fashioned believes with no supporting evidence and will hinder the cooling process with life-threatening consequences. Please follow the advice in the links below, which is based on up to date research.

To summarise, you should:

โ˜€๏ธ Cool them immediately and continuously with COLD water ALL OVER THE BODY
- either pour cold water over them, hose them with cold water (make sure the water is actually cold before spraying your dog), or place them in a paddling pool under supervision.

โ˜€๏ธ Seek veterinary support

โ˜€๏ธEnsure they have access to cold drinking water

There is so much misinformation going around at the moment as a result of the hot weather. Please be diligent about what you see online.

Cold water will not be what kills your overheated animal, but it MAY just save their life!

In some parts of the world resting horses is termed "spelling". Horses going out to pasture for a spell is the equivalent of humans going on holiday; a time to refresh mentally as well as rebuild and repair physically.

I think this is a great term. Vets are often expected to have a magic wand that fixes all. We don't. We have many procedures medications and management that help but sometimes you just can't beat conservative management with rest and recuperation. There is no substitute. Obviously we need to make sure this is done in the right way, for the right amount of time, for the right issues and the right individuals.

When we advise rest we aren't shying away from treating your horse but utilising nature's 'spell'; sometimes that is when the magic happens.

Happy 2024 to all my lovely clients, patients and followers! I hope everyone has had a great Christmas.

Itโ€™s been a busy start to the year so far, with the most exciting announcement being the welcoming of the latest addition to the MPVP familyโ€ฆ. Everyone Meet Toby! (Yes, we now have a Toby and a Coby - just to keep things confusing). Toby has joined us as a new best friend for my mum, following the sad decision to retire our beloved pony Lady earlier this year; although Iโ€™m sure weโ€™ll convince her to share ๐Ÿ˜œ

Iโ€™d also like to take this opportunity to thank you all so much for your continued support throughout 2023. Iโ€™m really looking forward to seeing more of your lovely animals in 2024. I do still have some availability towards the end of this month, so please get in touch if you would like to book in! ๐Ÿด๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฐ

In essence, by decreasing muscular hypertonicity and painโ€ฆ are we taking away the horses coping mechanism? Whilst they may be more comfortable initially, surely the same problems will just continue to occur as we are treating the symptom (muscle) and not the cause of the ailment?

And it was this trail of thought that made me realise that you can use massage techniques and electrotherapy modalities endlessly, but without changes to the horses lifestyle regime and exercise values the effectiveness of treatment is short-lived.
To put into perspective, if we have a painful back because we have been lifting a heavy haynet without correct posture. We then see the doctor/physiotherapist/chiropractor/osteopath etc for treatment. Once the treatment is complete and the pain has subsided, it would be then ๐’„๐’๐’–๐’๐’•๐’†๐’“๐’Š๐’๐’•๐’–๐’Š๐’•๐’Š๐’—๐’† to lift the same heavy haynet again. For optimum recovery and long term health, you would complete your physiotherapy exercisesโ€ฆ restโ€ฆ and employ lifestyle changes (e.g. warming up the muscle before heavy lifting, not lifting or lifting with better posture). So why is it accepted for our horses to have their physiotherapy treatment, but then continued to be exercised in incorrect posture? In order to stop the cycle of the muscular tension returning or becoming chronic, therapeutic practices need to be employed on a daily basis. This can range from stretching, incorporating pole work exercises weekly, avoiding haynet use or even increased turnout.

This is why ringbone is such a horrible diagnosis.

We know a hoof rehabilitation farrier who began her in depth studies and apprenticeships because she lost her mare to ringbone from a lifetime of improper trim set ups in the hooves.

Ringbone is an issue that is mainly occurring because of a lack of knowledgeable hoof care.

While conformation, genetics, and the horse's daily use are also factors, how the horse's foot lands is super important to the long term soundness of the animal.

What is Rehabilitation (Rehab) Livery?

I am seeing more and more livery yards offering โ€˜rehab liveryโ€™ as an option - So what should you be aware of when sending your horse to a rehab yard?

Who manages the yard?
A fully qualified veterinary physiotherapist overseeing the rehabilitation. If the yard has a water treadmill, please ensure that a qualified hydrotherapist is formulating the programme, and ask to see a training plan (it should be based on your horseโ€™s pathology, and detail all parameters) This plan should be specific to your horse, and not a generic plan.

Does the yard liaise with other professionals?
The yard should have a team of experts that can assist in your horseโ€™s recovery; vets, farriers, nutritionists, saddlers etc - If you want to continue using your own team, then the yard should be talking with them to find out the history of the patient.

What equipment do they have?
A yard with a horse walker is not a rehab yard. As a minimum they should have an in-house physiotherapist who can offer a range of electrotherapy options to aid recovery (laser, indiba, pemf etc). Yards with treadmills, swimming pools or water treadmills should have enough staff to safely and competently operate this. For horses on box rest, there should be small (stable sized) securely fenced sand pens which would allow horses to be outside for several hours, absorbing vitamin D, and able to roll (if permitted) and/or socialise over a fence with other horses (again, situation dependent). A yard with small fields, stables and a horse walker, is not a rehab yard.

A yard without a qualified professional overseeing the rehab program is not a rehab yard - it is a full livery, where the owner/manager is happy to take on the role of hand walking/exercising based on your vetโ€™s recommendations.

A rehab yard has qualified professionals present who can continuously reassess and develop your horseโ€™s individual rehabilitation plan, on a day by day basis, based on how the horse is progressing and by implementing their advanced rehabilitation knowledge.

Please donโ€™t confuse the two.

As most of you have probably noticed, earlier this year I started offering McTimoney chiropractic treatment for animals alongside veterinary physiotherapy (and added some extra letters to my name in the process). Upon finally opening my certificate, however, I realised I never actually did an official โ€œlaunchโ€ post for this, so here we are:

Iโ€™ll do a separate post shortly to fully introduce the McTimoney technique, so keep an eye out for this.

Itโ€™s that time again! Please be REALLY careful with the grass this week. I have been out to a couple of horses (not native fat ponies, but a shod thoroughbred and a very fit/lean warmblood) who both have raised pulses and sore feet after being turned out for one day on โ€œbetterโ€ grazing. I also received a phone call this afternoon about a 3yr old pony with no history of laminitis, who is rocked back off her toes. Finally, tonight I came home to find that my own highland has a rock hard neck and looks bloated, even on very restricted strip grazed track. The grass out there is frankly dangerous at the moment. Please, please be cautious! Call your vet if you see any/early signs, and TELL YOUR HOOFCARE PROVIDER. They might need a longer appointment slot than usual, or a shorter cycle, or to ask you to request markers on your xrays, or to bring extras like therapy boots/pads, a different type of shoe, or they might just have some nuggets of wisdom.

(EDITED TO ADD THAT I AM IN THE UK)

So I managed to find some time over the bank holiday to give Coby some TLC, and in true โ€me-styleโ€, I forgot to take before and after photos at the start and end of the treatment ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

I did, however, capture him pre-and post pelvic adjustment and it really is amazing to see the difference just one misalignment can make to the whole body! There was still plenty of work to do after the second photo, but I thought this visual would be interesting to share.

Myth: All pain relief works the same for our pets.

During my years working as a physiotherapist, I have seen the big differences in pain levels just from swapping one NSAID to another or adding an extra pain relief which works through a different pain pathway. Sometimes a combination approach is best and what works for one dog, may not work for another.

There are many types of pain relief for our pets and it can be intimidating navigating the world of analgesia. There are many medications not mentioned in the table, but I wanted to show the variety and differences and to get you more knowledgeable when discussing pain medication options with your veterinarian.

Weโ€™d like to extend our deepest sympathies to Paulโ€™s family and friends. To millions Paul Oโ€™Grady is the popular TV and radio presenter and comedian who lit up their screens with his razor-sharp humour and perpetual generosity and warmth. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is an area often overlooked during treatment, but tension and dysfunction here can be a cause or result of pain elsewhere. It is actually comprised of 2 joints, responsible for the movement of the mandible (jaw) across multiple planes.

Tension here can arise for multiple reasons, ranging from dental issues, tack/ridden pressures, vertebral misalignments, hoof imbalance or almost any other neuro/musculoskeletal injury or dysfunction throughout the entire body.

This is due to its links with the vestibular system, which is responsible for balance, as well as being a focal point for multiple myofascial lines.

Watch how Darcyโ€™s expressions change throughout this video - how his eyes and blinking become heavier, the change in his breathing, and the licking and chewing. These are signs of release.
