So nice to see this little chap coming on well. First week of ridden work after a few months of ground work to improve his strength and suppleness. Well done Rach for jumping on after 18 months out of the saddle pretty good effort all round 👍☺️

It’s seems a long time since I posted anything so I thought I’d share a little of what’s been going on at Greenwood Farm. In May was 🐑 lambing season and although that happens at home on the farm we are housing a lot of the ewes and lambs at Greenwood. It’s so lovely watching them grow and having fun . Over 300 lambs from 150 ewes, not bad! Well done girls!
For the Equine department it’s been busy we have 2 gorgeous boys in for some rehab and it is an absolute pleasure getting to know them and working with them . They both happen to live far away so to stay at Greenwood enables them to be in close contact with their vets and farriers so we can all work together in bringing them back in to work and managing their issues.
My boys are all well , Charlie has an important role of keeping our guests company in the field, or in the yard ,Twigs is living his best life, turn out , a little work, and pampered within an inch of his life❤️and Vegas continuing his training and also being pampered!🥰

𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁 - 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀

Muscles control every aspect of movement - both internal and external. They form the largest tissue mass in the horse's body.

There are various types of muscles performing a wide variety of tasks all working in a similar way. Electrical impulses instruct the fibres to contract and shorten, then relax and lengthen.

There are 3 types of muscle:
𝟭. 𝗦𝗺𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 - This is an involuntary muscle which functions automatically. It surrounds and is found in all internal tissues and organs. Smooth muscle responds to stimuli from the autonomic nervous system. It is responsible for pushing food through the digestive system and for the physical control of the bladder and bowel. It is also found in the vascualr and reproductive systems.

𝟮. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗰 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 - A highly specialised, strong, thick muscle that is fatigue resistant. Beating around 100,000 times a day throughout the horse's lifetime. This muscle co-ordinates the propulsion of blood in and out of the heart.

𝟯. 𝗦𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 - There are over 700 different skeletal muscles in the horse. The brain sends a signal to the muscles via nerves which then convert chemical energy into movement.
The function of skeletal muscle is to:
🐎 Support the skeleton and create movement
🐎 Maintain joint stability and posture
🐎 Control range of movement
🐎 Protect the skeleton and internal organs from trauma
🐎 Contribute to thermoregulation by shivering

With lovely sweet grass coming through 😋Charlie has his muzzle back on. I always need to watch his weight this time of year and as the the risk of laminitis is high at the moment this is one of the ways I can control his intake. I always feel mean putting it on 😞 but a real necessity to keep him happy and healthy ❤️

🩸 Vasodilation is the process by which the blood vessels in the body relax and widen, allowing for greater blood flow.

🩸 Vasodilation allows for an increase in oxygen and nutrient delivery within the body, allowing for greater energy production for the muscles.

🩸 Vasodilation also helps improve the removal of catabolic waste products from the muscles like lactic acid and ammonia that contribute to muscle fatigue and failure.

🩸 Vasodilation is most beneficial to athletes (horses) that require aerobic endurance and who produce a lot of lactic acid.

Vegas seems to be really enjoying his first session today. It will be a great addition to his daily routine to help keep him in tip too condition.

Just thought it would be interesting to show the difference in these pictures of Twiglet from December to now.
In the earlier pictures he was about 4/5 weeks into his long reining work prescribed by my vet. It’s a long story but in the late summer autumn 22 he sustained a pelvic/ back injury in the field and I think he must have aggravated it again resulting in some muscle atrophy and hypertension. He became grumpy to touch and lost weight and condition and just looked unhappy. He also had a colic episode resulting in a night at the hospital which was a bit scary but thankfully it sorted itself out without too much intervention 🙏.
The main areas I want to point out is the underside of his neck changing from overdevelopment and tight brachiocephalic muscle and a weak top line. His neck almost looks shorter then the latest picture.
Also his hindquarters and lumbar area look rounder and stronger with less of a dip and slope in front of the point of croup.
He has been in ridden work for a few weeks now with lots of pole/ raised pole work . I will try to get some video footage but he’s working much more freely forward over his back and able to lift through his withers enabling him to carry his head and neck out in front of him . At 21yrs old I have taken it slowly but he’s definitely feeling loads better 😊
