Interesting article on soaking hay

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐨𝐚𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐲? ⏱
Along with restricting access to grazing, especially at this time of year, soaking 💦 the hay ration is a really useful way to help reduce calorie intake for good-doers, as it washes out water soluble carbohydrates (wsc).

Last year we supported a study, at Hartpury University, which looked at wsc levels in hay after different soak times.* 🤓

This found that a maximum reduction in wsc content of nearly 50% occurred, after a soaking period of 8 hours and that little further reduction was achieved by soaking for up to 12 hours. ⏱

Remember that not only does soaking help reduce the calorie content of the hay but it also washes out essential other nutrients, like vitamins and minerals. This makes feeding a balancer, like Lo-Cal, all the more important for equines whose weight-loss diet is based on soaked forage and poor grazing. 🌿🌿

This custom design RRIII with a rose was clipped on today.

Once the stencil was placed on to the horse I always like to start clipping from the bottom up as it keeps all of the clipped coat off of the rest of the stencil!

After all of the coat has been removed from all of the gaps the stencil can be peeled downwards partially so you can tidy up around the edges but still being able to lift it back up to see the guideline.

This horse was then fully clipped and given a hot cloth wipe over with a splash of baby oil to remove any loose hair and to give her coat a lovely shine!

Bees are my favourite insect so I decided to custom make this design to clip on to one of my horses. Please excuse his dirty bottom 😅

I quite often have to scoop them out of our horses field waters where they then hitch a ride on my arm until they’re dry and strong enough to fly away!

Please always make time to help our bees when they need it most 🐝

It has been a great start to the year with the new law coming in regarding horses and traffic! We have already noticed a huge difference which is extremely positive in helping to keep all of us road users safe 😁

So in light of this new law we have designed a new paint stencil to remind other road users how to safely pass us all. They are quick and easy to apply using non toxic pony paints!

This is the first design we have made for road safety and we’ll be doing some more shortly.

Tonight we have an example of the clipping ‘No Fear’ design. This horse is overcoming some major hurdles in life after being mistreated and clipping was one of them. We chose a more simple design for him and he stood like a pro using trimmers on his bottom!
