Another busy week for us!
Lots of walks, visits, pop ins and cat visits too
Another busy week of walks and visits, alongside some very warm weather.
As always the welfare of my clients dogs is paramount so lots of early walks for doggies and extra visits where nessecary
We're so lucky that we have several shady areas, with free flowing water locally, for the dogs to play and keep cool
Tips for out in the field 🌱☀️🐴
- Provide unlimited access to clean water
- Provide shade for your horse to get out of the sun
- Use fly protection (sprays, rugs and masks)
- Apply sun cream to prevent sunburn
- Tie a Haynet in the shade to encourage your horse out of the sun
- Turnout in the cooler parts of the day (early mornings and later evenings)
- If your horse is usually out in the day consider night turnout
Tips for in the stable 🏠🐴☀️
- Add extra water to your horses feeds to keep them hydrated ( you can even wet their hay for extra water intake)
- Feed electrolytes to replace any lost through increased sweating in the heat
- Use fans as a great way to keep your horses stables cool
- Open any extra stable windows for increased airflow
Tips for Ridden horses 🏇☀️
- Avoid riding in the hottest parts of the day, beat the heat early in the mornings or wait till the cooler evenings
- Hose off your horses after exercise as an effective way to cool them down
- Avoid travelling at the hottest times of the day
Signs your horse may be suffering in the heat…
-Lethargy
-Fast, shallow breathing
-Elevated heart rate
-Eating less
-Drinking less
-Urinating less and dark urine
-Muscle spasms
-Poor ridden performance
A fun week of walks, thankfully it's been a bit cooler for everyone
We've still made the most of the lovely water spots we have nearby! Everyone loves a splash around in the water! 💦💦
With the exception of the lovely Joy, who I got to meet this week. Isn't she cute 💕
Wow that was a very warm week!
Lots of early walks, water fun for the dogs 💦
Poor Folio developed an abscess whilst his guardians were away, so a call to the farrier and he was straight out thank you Anthony Somerville!
He's so much more comfortable 🙌
I'm off now until Monday 5th. I'm heading to with a friend and her horses, for some forest horse fun time 🐴
Hi everyone,
We've had to make the decision that we won't be taking on any additional House or Pet sitting bookings for 2025. My dad has been very unwell recently and it's a huge strain on my mum to be around for him and also cover bookings.
(Those who've already booked for next year your booking will be covered).
If you do find that you need to make a booking I maybe able to cover this, depending on my own diary with Equine and Canine work. So please always do ask, but this would be limited if I were able to clients in the Witham area only sadly.
Alternatively I'll be able to reccomend a fabulous friend who provides Pet and House sitting or another good friend who offers home from home boarding, here in Witham.
Both of these companies are very much in line with our ethos, so your loved doggies would be in fabulous hands, with either of them.
Theresa
My weekend starts now! 🙌 Walks are finished up early due to the high temps
Take great care of your furry friends in this heat. My doglets are now sat enjoying the cool breeze, from their fan!
Lots of happy doggies from this weeks walks 😊
A lovely week of walks 😊
Gosh that was some very warm weather!
Thanks to my clients for where needed being flexible with walk times, to keep your doggies safe
I personally love the sunshine, but keeping dogs, cats and horses safe in that weather, is no joke.
You'll see a few more faces tomorrow 🐎🦄
How to help your horse or horses in the heat!
Management ideas and also key, accurate vetinary information on how to best help your horse, if they become too hot. How to rapid cool, correctly and effectively 🐴
Dr David Marlin’s top tips to help you manage your dog in the heat – a few simple principles can help you keep your pet/s comfortable and safe in the hottest summer months.
AVOIDING the heat is the best approach.
Some basics are:
Walk in the early morning or late evening
Reduce activity e.g. keep dogs on leads or avoid ball games, etc
If your dog is outside it must have access to shade
Keep dogs inside during the hottest part of the day in a ventilated room (but with the windows shut), with curtains or blinds pulled and ideally with a stone or tiled floor
Get a mobile AC unit or fan
Water MUST always be available
A few ice cubes on their own or in the water bowl will cause no ill effect BUT this will not offer any significant cooling benefit.
Consider clipping (see below for more information)
Spray your dog with water from a garden spray, plant sprayer or hose
Provide a paddling pool
To keep the house cool, open windows at night and close them in the morning and pull curtains/blinds. Your house is insulated and will keep heat out during the day
If your dog is panting at rest it is not comfortable and is not coping well with the heat and its body is under stress you must take action!
If your dog is at HIGH RISK OF HEASTROKE OR THE CONSEQUENCES OF HEASTROKE and you cannot avoid the heat then you should strongly consider getting them clipped. When I say clipped I don’t mean removing all the coat or clipping it very short.
Those at high risk to heatstroke includes:
Large dogs
Dogs with thick coats
Overweight dogs
Unfit dogs
Very active dogs
Dark coloured dogs
Old dogs
Ill dogs
Dogs with chronic heart or respiratory conditions
Dogs with upper airway problems
Brachycephalic breeds
The more of these factors that apply to your dog the higher the risk of heatstroke.
Clipping
Clipping the coat of some dogs can result in abnormal hair growth and this may affect some breeds more than others. Personally, I’d rather have a dog with abnormal hair growth than one that had suffered permanent health damage from heatstroke or worse.
Making the coat too short could increase the risk of sunburn but NOT heatstroke!
Signs of heatstroke
Learn to recognise the signs of heatstroke
Faster, heavier panting
Barking, whining or signs of agitation
Excessive thirst
Excessive drooling
Increased pulse and heartbeat
Dark-coloured (red or purple) gums or tongue
Glassy eyes
Elevated body temperature of 40ºC (104ºF) and up
Staggering, weakness or collapse
Seizures
Unconsciousness
HEATSTROKE is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY and requires IMMEDIATE ACTION and VETERINARY SUPPORT.
Cool your dog by hosing or pouring COLD WATER all over the body or place them in a paddling pool to rapidly reduce temperature and call your vet! (Do don’t leave them unattended in a pool or otherwise in case of collapse.)
This could save your dog’s life. If you attempt to cool with lukewarm/tepid water your dog will be at increased risk!
Clarification on cold water
Hot Over 40°C
Warm – 30-40°C
Lukewarm/Tepid – ~35°C (the definition is variable according to source)
Cold – 10-20°C
Ice Cold

As of the 10th of June all cats 20 weeks and above need to be microchipped by law!
You also need to ensure that your microchip details are keep up to date, using a DEFRA approved microchipping database.
This new law is currently for England only.
This is a great poster, with good information on what to do if your dog gets bitten by an adder!
This happens more often than you'd think, so always beat to be prepared 🐍
