We've been growing green beans in the garden this year, these can be a really nice healthy treat for our dogs. Here are just some of the benefits:

Low in Calories: Green beans are low in calories, which can be beneficial for dogs that need to manage their weight or for those that require a larger volume of food to feel full.

Fiber: Green beans are a good source of dietary fiber, which can help support digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements and preventing constipation.

Vitamins and Minerals: Green beans contain vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin K. They also provide minerals like potassium and manganese, which contribute to overall health and vitality.

Hydration: Green beans have a high water content, which can contribute to your dog's overall hydration, especially during hot weather or if your dog tends to drink less water.

Weight Management: Adding green beans to a dog's meal can help increase the bulk of the meal without significantly increasing calorie intake. This can be helpful for dogs that need to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

Alternative to Treats: Green beans can be a healthy and low-calorie alternative to traditional dog treats. They can be used as rewards during training sessions or as a snack.

Variety: Adding green beans can provide dietary variety for your dog, which can be mentally stimulating and prevent mealtime boredom.

Tips for Feeding Green Beans to Dogs:

Cooked and Chopped: Like with other vegetables, it's best to cook green beans before feeding them to your dog. Raw green beans can be tough and difficult to digest. Cooked and chopped green beans are easier for dogs to eat and digest.

Plain Preparation: Avoid adding any seasonings, spices, or sauces to the green beans. Plain, cooked green beans are the safest and healthiest option for your dog.

Moderation: While green beans are generally safe, it's important to feed them in moderation. Too much of any new food can potentially cause digestive upset.

Simple snuffle idea to use all those odd socks you have!...

You'll need:
Odd socks, the more the merrier!
Small box to arrange the socks in (we used a pizza box as it already had a good sized hole which was perfect!)
Treats

Roll up a sock, place a treat in the roll and then turn over the sock on itself to make a kind of rosebud shape.
Repeat with all your odd socks
Arrange them in the box
Let your dog enjoy unraveling them and finding the treats!

Let's talk about supplements, herbs and more.

What are you adding to your dog's food?

Do you know why you are adding it?

Do you know what's in it?

If you're not adding anything in, why not?

This is a non-judgement post it is all about understanding. We are doing a series on what can be added to the bowl, why and how?

What out for our blog series.

Thanks

Vicky and Diane

Hi

Tells us what you add to your dog's bowl. It doesn't matter what you are feeding as a core, kibble, wet, raw or cooked. What add extras are you putting in there and do you know the reason you are adding?

We are kicking off our how-to pimp your dog food to give your dogs extra nutrition. We will be launching a series of blogs on what you could add and the possible benefits these might have.

Sign up for our mailing list to make sure you don't miss out.

Me and Diana thought we should share with you our aims and what we are about.

We believe in helping people understand the food they are feeding and making educated choices about the food they feed.

We understand how confusing this is. What should you feed? Kibble, wet, raw or home-cooked? We have spent time learning and questioning, reading thousand of studies so you don't have to.

We have 4 key principles that are the foundation of Beyond The Bowl, Education, support, science and choice.

Every dog is different just like us and what works for one is not necessarily the same for another.

Hi

I'm Vicky, In the middle here.

I am a functional canine nutritionist. I have completed my Ofqual canine nutrition course, as well as many other canine nutrition courses.s I am also a qualified herbal choices practitioner.

I am the proud parent of 2 beautiful dogs both very different with individual needs. Myst 9-year-old border collie and Storm 7-year-old Lurcher. They are the reason I started down my nutrition path.

Unfortunately, Myst is the fussiest dog I have ever met and I struggle to find food that she would eat happily, I did try tough love, However, she is the dog that will break the rules and could have to stave herself before she would eat something she doesn't like. Storm on the other hand will eat pretty much anything and it does not even have to be eatible, but food does not always agree with her. This led to me questioning food for my dogs and how could I sort both issues out. I have chosen to raw feed mine own with at the time when I started was controversial and confusing. I felt it was important to understand what I was doing and If I was giving them everything they need to live long and happy lives. I completely understand that raw feeding is not for everyone or their dog it is a personal choice as to what is best for you and your dog.

We here can help you make that choice through education and understanding. That is my personal goal to help as many people as possible understand the food they are feeding and how it can affect all areas of the dog's life.

I am looking forward to taking you on this journey.

Thanks

Vicky

Tasting Platters...

Each week we like to offer our dogs a tasting platter - this comprises of 5 or 6 different food items. Some maybe novel and not something they've had before and some maybe food they eat regularly. We love seeing how different our dogs taste preferences differ and change. Todays offering is a chicken wing, 1/4 cup of raw meat, carrot peelings, goats yoghurt, blueberries, a qualis egg, kale and banana.

This is not a balanced meal and is not fed as that, this is just to give our dogs a different taste sensation and experience new foods. We adjust their daily food portions accordingly.

Have a go and see what your dog likes!

I started my nutrition journey at Writtle College in Essex 9 years ago on their small animal nutrition course and I was hooked! Since then I've pretty much done every nutrition course out there and last year completed my Level 3 Diploma. I am also an applied zoopharmacognosy and herbal choices practitioner and love being able to practice a much more 'wholistic' approach to caring for our animals. Its not just about treating symptoms but looking at gut health, diet, exercise to ensure your dog is in the very best of health. My last dog, George made it to 17 and i'm pretty convinced thats due to his diet, exercise and overall lifestyle. Yes, genetics do play a part, but he had the best life and the best food for the most part. My dogs definitely eat better than i do!

Just over 7 years ago I co-wrote the book 'Beyond the Bowl' and launched the facebook group you know today. Since then there have been a few changes but we still remain true to wanting to offer education, knowledge and ideas to enhance the life of your dog and your relationship.

Thank you so much for your support over the years, please do tell your friends and feel free to share our content, our recipes and our tips!
