⚽️ Dogs And The Euros ⚽️

We got sent this fantastic photo from one of our owners last night following Germany’s 2-0 victory against Denmark last night and we just had to share it with you all!

Who are you and your dogs supporting during this Euros? Are you supporting England or are your dogs supporting the country in which their breed was developed? Of course these beautiful German Shepherds are backing Germany.

Feel free to share photos of your dogs celebrating the Euros in the comments below! ⚽️🐶🐾♥️

🚶🏼‍♂️‍➡️ What A Day! 🚶🏼‍♂️

Yesterday Paul and I took on our longest challenge to date; 30 miles of the Calderdale Way! ♥️🐶

It was an early start meeting at 6:00am and getting straight in to it at Copley! We started pretty steady and managed the first 10 miles in 4 hours then as my knee decided to start playing up by Withens Clough we had to reduce our pace. We got to our half way point just as we were dropping down in to Mankin Holes and it wasn’t long after that my hip decided to start playing up, slowing us down even more. However, despite all of my medical set backs Paul remained supportive and we were welcomed back to The Volunteer Arms in Copley at 10:00pm! A long 16 hour day but it was fantastic! ♥️♥️

We would like to say a massive thank you to each and every person who has taken time out to like, share, and comment on our posts and we have an extra special thank you to everyone who sponsored our challenge! So far we have raised a staggering £818.00 on our Just Giving Page! That amount is going to help so many pooches! ♥️🐶🐾

We’re already discussing what challenge we’re setting ourselves for next years fundraiser but for now, we’ll give you one clue….. Tour De Yorkshire 😉

Copley ➡️ Norland ➡️ Ripponden ➡️ Millbank ➡️ Cragg Vale ➡️ Withens Clough ➡️ Mankin Holes ➡️ Todmorden ➡️ Blackshaw Head ➡️ Heptonstall ➡️ Hardcastle Craggs ➡️ Hebden Bridge ➡️ Copley

📣 Im-paw-tant Announcement! 📣

In only 10 days time Paul, from Baxter's Dog Walking, and I will be taking on this years charity challenge! Last year saw us conquering the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, this year will see us tackling as much of the Calderdale Way as we can in a day!

Paul and I will begin our challenge from Copley bright and early and will complete a circular route of the Calderdale Way ending back in Copley, hopefully before they call last orders at The Volunteer Arms!

We are of course doing this to raise some much needed funds for an amazing local charity - Mabel's Meals! Mabel’s Meals is a registered charity who fundraise money to help owners, who are struggling financially, feed their beloved pets. With the money that is raised they will be able to create more food parcels which they hand out at food banks ensuring no pooch goes to bed on an empty stomach.

Every penny counts so please feel free to give as much or as little as you can. If you are unable to help financially please do give this post a like and a share to spread the word! Thank you! ♥️🐶🐾

Also a special shoutout to WKD Graffix for creating this wonderful promotional poster!

♥️🐶🐾 As you know we love working with our fellow canine professionals and yesterday we enlisted the help from the amazing Philippa at Happy Dog House UK on one of our meet & greets.

The reason we do our meet & greets is to ensure a positive relationship is formed between the dog and I so due to Buddy’s training regime we teamed up with Happy Dog House UK in order to make the meet & greet run as smoothly as possible.

I can happily announce that the meet & greet was a success and I am really looking forward to meeting this handsome chap again! ♥️🐶🐾

♥️🐶🐾 So here it is the final day of a 4 day spectacle which has seen more than 20,000 dogs strutting it out to take the title of Best in Show however before we find out who will take the title we’re focusing on the Terrier & Hound breeds!

The Terrier group is made up of dogs who were originally used and bred to go to ground. These dogs would be universally used by people of all classes to hunt different game however all classes would use these tenacious little dogs for vermin control. The Terriers were specifically bred for this purpose so the smaller dogs were able to get in to burrows to flush the rodents out and the extra fur on some Terrier muzzles would protect them from being bitten in the process. ♥️🐶🐾

The Hound group can be split in to two; the Sight Hounds and the Scent Hounds. As described the Sight Hounds, like the Greyhound and Lurcher, would primarily rely on their eyes when hunting whereas the Scent Hounds, like the Basset Hound and Beagle, would rely on their noses. The Scent hounds tend to be shorter in stature so they’re closer to the ground and able to take up more scent and this size partnered with larger ears would maximise the amount of scent they could track. The sight hounds with their longer legs would usually follow the hunters on horseback. All hounds were used as vermin control and some like the Dachshund had their specialties in badger hunting. ♥️🐶🐾

We would love to see pictures of your Terrier & Hound dogs so please do feel free to post them in the comment section below! ♥️🐶🐾

♥️🐶🐾 With the penultimate day of Crufts 2024 in full swing we are turning our attention those Working & Pastoral breeds!

The working group is said to be home to some of the most heroic dogs there are. These breeds have been selectively bred to become guard and search and rescue dogs who specialise in their fields and excel at their work. For example the Newfoundland was once used by fishermen to help them pull in their fish nets today Newfoundland’s can still be seen helping man in water but for a different purpose; search and rescue. ♥️🐶🐾

The Pastoral group is made up of dogs who were primarily used by shepherds and farmers to guard and herd their livestock. They have been bred over centuries with this purpose in mind so are able to withstand harsh climates because the shepherd and farmers would require them to stay outside for long periods of time. The alpearances of many of these breeds may differ but they all had their role to play. The Puli is lightly bones and nimble enough to run over the back ps of the sheep where as the Komondor is strong b***d in order to guard and direct flock. ♥️🐶🐾

We would love to see your Working & Pastoral breeds so please do feel free to share pictures of them in the comment section below! 🐾🐶♥️

🐶♥️🐾 Day 2 has officially begun and today it’s all about those gundogs! The Gundog group is made up of all those breeds who were bred and used to aid hunters when collecting game. The hunting process was a very well practiced procedure and the Gundogs each had their own role to play.

It would usually begin with the Setters and Pointers sniffing the land in order to pick up the scent and then freezing (Set or Point) in the direction of where the game is. Then the Spaniels would be set in to flush whatever game is in the bush releasing it in to the air where the hunters could take their shot. After a successful shot the Retrievers would be sent in to locate the game and bring it back to the handler. 🐶♥️🐾

This method proved so successful that it is still used today and while many gundogs still partake in the hunting process the majority of gundogs today can be found in the family home as a companion animal. 🐶♥️🐾

We want to see your gundogs so please do share pictures if the in the comments below! 🐾♥️🐶

♥️🐶🐾 And they’re off! Day 1 of Crufts is now well under way and today is all about those Toy and Utility breeds! 🐾🐶♥️

Out of the 7 groups, the Toy group is home to the smallest breeds there are. For centuries the breeds which make up this group were bred for their little stature by ladies who were given the runts of litters and kept primarily as companions, which is also what many of them are still used for today.♥️🐶🐾

On first glance the Utility group looks like a mismatch of breeds however this group is made up of dogs who were originally bred and used for guarding. For example the Chow Chow was used for guarding during the Han Dynasty of China and the Lhasa Apso was kept by Tibetan monks for companionship as well as watchdogs of the monasteries. Today, a lot of these breeds can be more commonly found in the family home as companion dogs. ♥️🐶🐾

We want to see all your Toy and Utility breeds so please post pictures of them in the comments below! If you’re unsure if your dog fits in to these groups check the bottom of the picture to find which dogs are being shown today! ♥️🐶🐾

♥️🐾🐶 Crufts is only 1 day away so today we’re focusing on those breeds which may be slightly less well known; the vulnerable native breeds!

The vulnerable native breed list consists of 43 breeds originating from the UK who have extremely low registration numbers each year (less than 300). It is important that these breeds get the publicity they deserve because they are at risk of becoming extinct in the UK. The native vulnerable list is as follows:

- Bearded Collie (232)
- Bloodhound (54)
- Miniature Bull Terrier (264)
- Smooth Collie (45)
- Dandie Dinmont Terrier (102)
- Deerhound (132)
- English Setter (250)
- Black & Tan English Toy Terrier (93)
- Foxhound (1)
- Smooth Fox Terrier (89)
- Glen of Imaal Terrier (58)
- Gordon Setter (137)
- Greyhound (35)
- Harrier (0)
- Irish Red & White Setter (46)
- Irish Terrier (244)
- Irish Wolfhound (191)
- King Charles Spaniel (96)
- Kerry Blue Terrier (39)
- Lakeland Terrier (109)
- Lancashire Heeler (108)
- Manchester Terrier (110)
- Mastiff (69)
- Norwich Terrier (150)
- Otterhound (18)
- Curly Coated Retriever (83)
- Sealyham Terrier (136)
- Skye Terrier (36)
- Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier (156)
- Clumber Spaniel (223)
- Field Spaniel (79)
- Irish Water Spaniel (76)
- Sussex Spaniel (27)
- Welsh Springer Spaniel (167)
- Cardigan Welsh Corgi (82)

Of this list only 9 of the breeds have seen an increase in registration figures on the previous year with the Norwich Terrier seeing the highest increase of 43. The dog whose numbers dropped the most was the Cardigan Welsh Corgi seeing 119 fewer dogs registered last year and 3 new breeds have found themselves on the list including the Fox hound, Greyhound, and Irish Terrier. The breeds with the lowest registration figures last year were the Foxhound with 1 and Harrier who had 0 registrations! 😢

How well do you know your vulnerable native breeds? Below are the top 10 most entered vulnerable breeds of 2024, can you guess which dog took what place? 🐶🐾♥️

We'll discuss concerns and also recall issues, squirrel chasing, other people, dog body language and more.
