7 SELF-CARE TIPS FOR WHEN YOU ARE GRIEVING A PET

If you’ve recently suffered a pet bereavement, you may be finding life hard.

As we often mention here on The Ralph Site, our society has created lots of rituals and behaviours to help us cope when a human dies, but it can be harder to find space to grieve when you are mourning a pet.

The reality is that pet bereavement can be as devastating as losing a human friend or family member. Research from John Archer in 1996 found that pet carers often derive more satisfaction from their relationships with their pets than with humans because of the presence of unconditional love.

Sadly, it isn’t always easy to get time off work when a pet dies and you may feel that your friends and family don’t understand the extent of your grief.

This is why it’s incredibly important to prioritise your self-care at this time.

When you’re grieving, it can be hard to do the most basic or normal of tasks. You may even feel angry that the world can carry on as normal when you’re faced with such a profound loss.

Self-care will help you to navigate life and give you the emotional and physical resources to eventually move forward in your grief.

Here are some self-care tips to help you:

1. Give yourself time to grieve
2. Prioritise meeting your basic needs
3. Keep up your routines for other animals in your home
4. Reach out if you need support
5. Create your own bereavement rituals
6. Be kind to yourself
7. Breathe mindfully

GONE TOO SOON: COPING WITH THE LOSS OF A YOUNG PET

When a young pet joins your family, it is always a time of excitement and happiness (with some possible training stress thrown into the mix for those of you with dogs, cats, or rabbits!)

You think about the years of fun, love, and companionship ahead of you. This is true whether your young pet is a tiny hamster, a quirky axolotl, a snake, a guinea pig, a playful kitten, or a giant breed of dog (and every shape, size, or species in between).

As you plan for the future that includes your young pet, their death is probably the farthest thing from your mind.

Sadly, though, many people within The Ralph Site community find themselves having to cope with the loss of a young pet. It could be what has brought you to this site.

Is there a way of ‘coming to terms’ with the premature death of a pet? How can you process your loss when your companion has quite simply gone before their time? Is it possible to find comfort when all you can think about is how horribly unfair life is to rob your pet of their future when there was still so much of it in front of them?

** Update - reunited ! **

We have this lady with us - found in a garden in Ecchinswell. She is chipped but the contact numbers don’t work.

Please call 01635 46565 if she is yours.

A reminder that cats and dogs now have to be microchipped and it is a requirement to ensure that the address and contact details are up to date.

When Is The Right Time to Bring Home a New Pet?

The honest answer is that there isn't one simple response to this question.

As we head into the autumn, we receive lots of enquiries regarding acorns and oak trees (Quercus species).

Ingestion of acorns by dogs is common during the autumn months. Following a large, one off ingestion of acorns, vomiting and diarrhoea may occur in dogs, both of which may be bloody. Lethargy, abdominal tenderness and inappetence can also be seen and there is also the risk of gastrointestinal obstruction. There have been reports of kidney and liver damage following substantial or repeat ingestion of both acorns and the plant itself, a scenario more commonly seen in horses and ruminants.

Oak toxicity predominantly affects grazing species such as cattle, horses and sheep, but it can affect dogs and cats too.

Oak toxicity can cause:
❗ Gastrointestinal signs (such as vomiting, diarrhoea, colic)
❗ Inappetence
❗ Gastrointestinal obstruction (particularly if a large number of acorns have been ingested)
❗ Kidney and liver impairment (reported in a small number of cases involving dogs, horses and ruminants)
