Let’s talk about one of my most asked about topics…. RECALL!!

Not only is it nice to have a dog you can have off the lead but it is also a life saving skill!

There are so many factors that can hinder Recall, whether that be environmental (Birds, Other Dogs, People )Diet, Lack of training or inconsistent training, health issues that may affect their hearing or cognitive abilities, Reward, Variation and stress or anxiety level just to name a few!

At the beginning of the video, you can see Otto had no interest in being with me or near me… however once we got some focus and some new reward schedules we were able manage the experience even better and make us the best place to be!

Here at Prestige Dog Training, We not only are interested in the Dog’s emotional response to Stimuli and what is underneath the “unwanted” behaviour we also want to make training fun! Because why would you not want to learn and have fun at the same time?

Dogs actually learn even faster when they are having fun during training!

Dominance in Dogs is an OUTDATED theory!

More people need to be aware of this and stop using such harmful terminology.

When we use this terminology people start using very harmful methods to help “correct” their dog. In reality this is just going to damage your relationship and perhaps lead to a situation that could be prevented.

Some things that may be used to correct “Dominant” Behaviour
- Punishing a dog for Growling
- Rolling your dog on their back and standing above them
- Pinning a dog to the ground
- Staring into your dogs eyes
- Challenging or taking away food or resources
- Checking or Correcting with the lead
- Shouting at them
- E - Collars or Prong Collars
- Biting your dog back if they bite you (Especially in puppies)

These can result in very damaging consequences.

Instead we can:
- Desensitise Dog
- Set appropriate boundaries
- Counter-Conditioning
- Rewarding good behaviour
- Condition an incompatible behaviour ie Sit instead of Jumping up
- Understanding our dogs body language
- Work with our dogs
- Set dogs up for success!
- P+ Training for all!

Let’s talk about pain, in relation to training!

80% of cases are often linked to pain, especially increase in reactivity or new behaviours!

This is why I may ask you to have a vet check first.

STORY:

- We made a full Behaviour Modification Plan for a ”Reactive” Border Collie.

- We were seeing improvements and things started to get a little bit better.

- Behaviour started to worsen suddenly

- Vet Check - Vet said as he was ‘Reactive” it’s better off just putting him to sleep - GET A SECOND OPINION

- Vet Check no.2 - Turns out he has severe arthritis in his back and hips! Causing him immense pain!

- Border Collie put on Pain Meds

- Behaviour got better. Although there was now some pain relation to People and Dogs. (Every time he was seeing a Dog/ Person if he lunged the pain got worst! So he started to associate pain with other Dogs and People)

- Behaviour Modification Plan = SUCCESS

______________________________________

Moral Of The Story: We can do as much Behaviour Modification as we can but without knowing if there is pain, we are going to struggle to help the problem properly!!

FOOD PREFERENCE TESTS!

I absolutely love food preference tests!

Not only as its fun to do with your dog, but also it can really help in training.

By knowing what our dogs favourite rewards are we can use them in the areas they struggle with the most!

Sometimes it’s a big surprise when our dog prefers there own kibble to some “high value rewards”

Try it with your own dogs and see what happens!

You can either put all the foods in a baking tray and see what they pick first (Although this only works if your dog is a bit picky)

Or give them one of each and see which one they go for again!

I hear this all the time! But what we need to understand is the Emotional State of the dog in the moment! 🐾💜

Let’s dispel some myths!!

A waggy tail always means a happy dog?? FALSE

A windmill tail or a tail that goes all the way from one side to the other very quickly is usually a happy dog (paired with other body language of course) however dogs can wag their tails slowly if they feel unsure, anxious or ready to esculate behaviour !

A Growl should be punished?? FALSE!
One of my main rules is to never EVER punish a growl. This can often lead the dog to feel like they cannot growl in future which may = a bite seemingly “out of nowhere” Remember a GROWL is a dog COMMUNICATING that they aren’t happy in a situation

The direction of a dogs tail has meaning? TRUE!

Interestingly, after a few studies it has been shown a dog wagging their tail from centre to the right often has positive associations! And from centre to left usually has negative/anxious associations! There is huge science behind this based on a dogs brain! But i won’t go into that too much right now or I’ll be here all day 😂

You can asses a dog based on ears and tails alone? FALSE
Although we can get some relevant information from tails and ears, it is important we take other body language into consideration as that can tell a more accurate picture. Tails and Ears can also be docked which can hinder an accurate representation, as well as their being so much variation with different breeds 🙂

A dog who has raised hackles is always ready to esculate their behaviour ?
FALSE
When a dogs fur sticks up it is an involuntary reaction (Much like us humans getting goosebumps) and can happen for a number of reasons including
- Scent
- Arousal
- Anxiety
- Defensive
- Lack of Confidence
Although it can be an indication of a dog on the offence there are so many other factors!

True or False!!

Dog Body Language is one of the most important factors to owning a dog!

Over the next few days we will be going a little bit more into detail about Dog Body Language and what it means! As well as how a dog may show signs before they esculate their behaviour !

This is just a bit of fun and answers will be up later today 🐾💜
