Update on Group lessons.
The 4 Wednesday lessons are now full.
2 available spaces on the Saturday ones. Please get in touch so not to be disppointed

22/08/2024

Due to the great response for my obedience group lessons, I ve put together the day / dates I can do. Both classes will be covering the same things, but if all goes well and you do your home work we could then follow on with potentially another block of 4 with a higher standard.
In the first block, I would be covering
Heel work, sit and stay, recall, whistle work, behavioural issues.
The class would have a mixture of ages and breeds but I ll ensure that each individual handler / dog works on their problems as well as the whole groups.
Group lessons are great to ensure your dog starts to listen with the added distractions of other dogs but also its perfect for a handler to learn not only what works for their dog but also other dogs, so always learning as no dog / handler is the same.
Please get in touch asap which block you would like to be included in.
First come first served.
Lessons do need to be paid in full to secure your space

Wednesday 4th , 18th Sept, 2nd and 16th Oct - 10 am prompt start

Saturday 7th , 21st Sept, 5th and 19th Oct - 10 am prompt start

GROUP LESSONS

Max 6 in a group
Block of 4 lessons

Group 1 – every fortnight
Beginners
- Establishing your dog to listen
- Start your obedience / manners journey
- Understand your dog and what makes it tick

Group 2 – every 3rd week
Novice
- Increasing your training, obedience journey
- Really getting the basic obedience established and then testing it with distractions
- Bringing some gundog work with in your training
-

Both groups are for pet or future working dogs.

Outdoors in fully fenced paddocks

I strongly believe that all dogs should be trained to ensure using their brain and to stop them getting bored.
Once training is established you will get the well behaved, calm companion dog that we all dream of having.

Do get in touch if you would like to discuss the lessons further and to book your slot.
These lessons will work particularly well if you have already had a 121 first session with me but it’s not essential.
I hope to start these lessons as soon as possible, once I know the amount of interest for them.

Pia Birnie of Gamesika Gundogs
Hello, I'm Pia Birnie, the founder of Gamesika Gundogs. With over 35 years of experience and a lifelong passion for dogs, I have dedicated my career to training and teaching. At Gamesika Gundogs, we specialise in providing expert training services for both gundogs and pets.
Services Offered:
GUNDOG TRAINING: We provide one-on-one lessons in fully fenced paddocks, starting with basic obedience to lay a strong foundation, followed by gundog or higher obedience training. I firmly believe that all dog breeds, regardless of their roles, deserve training to help them remain well-behaved, calm, and happy. To enhance training effectiveness, I incorporate my own dogs into classes for distractions when needed, and also utilise our birds, sheep, and horses.
BEHAVIOURAL ISSUES: We tackle challenges such as aggression, separation anxiety, and more, often receiving referrals from local vets.
CANINIE PREGNANCY SCANNING: Qualified since May 2022, this service is ideal for checking if your bitch is in pup and estimating the size of the litter.
MICROCHIPPING: Available for dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens since February 2006.
CSJ DOG FOOD: Proud stockist since August 2008.
TRAINING AND GUNDOG DEMOS: Available for charity fairs, schools, and other events. Please contact me if you'd like a demonstration at your event.
PETS AS THERAPY VOLUNTEER: My black and white Springer, Fish, passed his assessment in March 2023. Since then, we have been visiting Penrice House, offering patients the comforting presence of Fish. We are also looking to expand our visits to schools to support children in need of some calm companionship.
Please get in touch if you would like to chat through anything.

No more hot dogs!

With the sun shining, the Royal Vet College has launched new evidence regards best approach to treating heat stroke. (Link at bottom).

This is to soak or immerse the dog in cold water (straight from the cold tap, not tepid and not iced) then put a fan or air con on them.
DO NOT COVER THEM IN WET TOWELS. These just warm up then act as insulation.

Heat stroke starts as excessive panting, agitation and drooling. The gums become dark pink to red, they may vomit or pass diarrhoea, the heart rate speeds up and this leads to collapse, organ failure and death if their temperature is not brought back down to normal quickly.

Call us once you have got the dog thoroughly wet and then in a source of air. This could be a fan, air con or driving to the vets with the windows open. They will need to be closely monitored to ensure hypothermia does not set in. You will typically be asked to attend immediately if active cooling has been started.

In a car on a warm day, heat stroke can occur within 6 minutes if they are left unattended, even with windows cracked open. Only walk them in the early morning or the evening when the temperature has dropped as dogs can’t cope with much exercise on warm days, even more so in muggy, humid weather.

It really is true that no dog ever died of not going for a walk.

morning, I dont normally write much on social media, keep myself to myself but today I felt as though I owe my thanks to many people etc.
A year ago today I took a fall from my horse on the road and sustained 5 fractures to my lower back, thank goodness I was wearing my body protector otherwise it could of been a different story.
Its been a tough year in so many ways but boy have a learnt from it. Many emotions, total fear in the first few days, long nights in hospital awake and thinking whats going to be the out come.
Loss of confidence in everything that I did, the fear of doing something due to my brain saying its going to hurt. I m thrilled to say I m so much stronger, I now will try things and think, ok that wasnt great or yes brilliant I managed it.
I have to say my family and friends, Jacqui Moses, especially Conrad, Neve Birnie and Mum, Susan Warren have been brilliant. Neve particularly was a star, she just got on with everything from raising 2 orphan lambs ( their mum died that same morning ) doing all of the animals, continuing to sell CSJ dog food, visiting me and going to work.
Thanks also to my physio Rowena Beckly, who always knew how to handle me and give me that kick up the bum when I needed it mainly over doing too much, I have since learnt to pace myself and to a degree will always have to do that. Lastly I must thank Kerry Barret of Angel Pilates - The Studio, I have been seeing Kerry since January for 121 classes, she has made such a difference, I m so much stronger and flexibility is getting so much better.
I m no longer riding, personal choice but I truly dont want to put my family through that again plus I m not getting a younger and as I found out, I really dont bounce any more ! So for my pony fix I have Seal (standard shetland) Keith Locke, Elaine Locke, William Merrellwho is so funny and honestly makes me giggle and smile everyday. The plan is to break her for harness so I can take her out in a trap. Take care of yourselves and thanks to you all x

E allora cosa farai?
Mi cederai?
Mi abbandonerai?
O mi sopprimerai?

Pleased to say both Fish and Eric passed their assessment with flying colours. This now means they are PAT dogs so I can take them to hospices, care homes, schools and hospitals to help the patients and pupils. I do feel dogs can give you so much comfort which is why I m volunteering to do this, we are all busy but putting aside some time to helping others is a must .

How it started.

My ( Pia ) love of dogs started at an early age, I grew up with them but also started to help my neighbour who was a shepherdess when I was about 9 years old and was so taken with how well her collies worked. I later became a shepherdess myself and hence trained and worked collies for many years. Around the same time I became involved with gundogs and learnt many things through going to the Chiltern Gundog Club. After a while I started to teach their puppy class and thoroughly enjoyed training the handlers on how to get the very best out of their dogs. I have since moved down to Cornwall and now have a wonderful family but still continue training and working the gundogs.
