Summer is here and chances are you’ll be seeing more dogs and cats with grass seed injuries.

A study published in the Journal of Small Animal Practice by researchers at the RVC explored CT findings associated with grass seed migration in dogs and cats.

For the study, records of cases that had a CT scan and subsequent retrieval of a grass seed during the same period of hospitalisation between August 2004 and October 2013 were retrospectively reviewed, resulting in cases of 44 dogs and 10 cats being included.

Despite rabbits being the third most popular pet species in the UK, their unique welfare needs often remain misunderstood and are frequently not met. By providing a rabbit-friendly environment in your vet practice, this means less stress for rabbits, staff and clients.

At this year's BSAVA Congress, Dr Richard Saunders, Veterinary Advisor for Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund, spoke about the importance of establishing a rabbit-friendly practice and shared advice on how this can be achieved.

We have worked with the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund to produce a new PROTECT ME poster on antibiotic use in rabbits. The update follows the recent overhaul of the BSAVA/SAMSoc Guide to Responsible Use of Antibiotics and the PROTECT ME poster for cats and dogs.

While the underlying principles of avoiding unnecessary use are the same across species, there are a number of rabbit-specific considerations relevant to the effective and safe use of antibiotics. In particular, the risk of antibiotic-associated enterotoxaemia requires careful monitoring and management.

The theme of this year’s Rabbit Awareness Week is ‘Healthy Diet, Happy Bunnies’, with the aim of highlighting how the lives of pet rabbits can be improved by feeding the correct, balanced diet.

A long-term study at the University of Edinburgh found that muesli-type diets have multiple adverse effects on rabbit health and may play a role in many disease processes. This study explored the impact of four diets (hay only, extruded diet with hay, muesli with hay, and muesli only) on various rabbit health and welfare conditions, through a controlled feeding trial on 32 Dutch rabbits.
